The frequency of definitive childlessness in women with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be higher than in the general population. MS may also affect decisions on the delivery procedure and on breast-feeding issues. Aim of the study was to assess the frequency of childlessness and its possible causes, the proportion of cesarean deliveries (CD), and the frequency of breast-feeding in patients and controls who have reached the end of their reproductive period. Female MS patients (> 43 years) and controls (> 45 years) filled out a questionnaire. We enrolled 303 patients and 500 controls. MS was associated with a higher frequency of childlessness (22 vs 13%) and less patients were in a stable relationship (83 vs 89%). There was no difference in the reported rates of infertility and miscarriages, while elective abortions were more frequent in patients (20 vs 12%). MS did not significantly affect the frequency of CD or of breast-feeding. MS-related reasons for childlessness, reported by 16% of childless patients, included disability/fear of future disability, fear of genetically transmitting MS, fear of not starting/discontinuing treatments, and discouragement by physician. Definitive childlessness is more frequent in women with MS compared to controls. A portion of voluntary childlessness may be avoided through correct/tailored information to patients.

Summary: This study explored the association between PM2.5 and the severity of COVID-19 among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), revealing that higher concentrations of PM2.5 increased the risk of worsening COVID-19 outcomes. The role of air pollutants in influencing COVID-19 severity in MS patients warrants further investigation.

Change in the second exteroceptive suppression period of the temporalis muscle during erenumab treatment

Eugenia Rota, Marco Aguggia, Paolo Immovilli, Nicola Morelli, Davide Renosio, Andrea Barbanera

Summary: This pilot study found a statistically significant decrease in ES2 latency and duration of the temporalis muscle activity after erenumab treatment in chronic female migraineurs. This suggests that ES2 may serve as a neurophysiological marker in migraine pathophysiology and that the monoclonal antibody can modulate brainstem circuits involved in migraine pathophysiology indirectly. Further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Summary: This study compares the outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Italy with the expected outcomes in the general population. The risk of severe events, including hospitalization, ICU admission, and death, was found to be twice as high in the MS cohort compared to the age- and sex-matched Italian population. The increased risk was primarily associated with disease severity and comorbidities, but there was also a higher risk of hospitalization in patients on anti-CD20 therapies and a lower risk in patients on interferon.

Summary: This study aimed to construct a score for evaluating the individual risk of severe Covid-19 in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients and to assess its performance. Data from MS patients infected with Covid-19 in Italy, Turkey, and South America were analyzed, and the main risk factors were identified. The score with the best performance was derived using Lasso regression and included variables such as age, sex, country, BMI, presence of comorbidities, and treatment. The score can be used as an additional tool to identify high-risk patients and promote preventive measures.

Inactive disease in patients with lupus is linked to autoantibodies to type I interferons that normalize blood IFNa and B cell subsets

Summary: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients often exhibit increased expression of type I interferon (IFN)-regulated genes. In our study of 501 SLE patients, we found that 73 (14%) had autoantibodies against IFN-alpha (anti-IFN-Abs). The presence of neutralizing anti-IFN-Abs in 4.2% of patients correlated with low IFN-alpha protein levels, inhibition of IFN-I downstream gene signatures, and inactive disease score. These neutralizing anti-IFN-Abs were found to play a role in controlling SLE pathogenesis, specifically in regulating B cell populations.

CT perfusion extended window ischemic core estimation: Bayesian algorithm versus oscillation index singular value decomposition

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of two different CTp postprocessing algorithms (Bayesian method and oscillation index singular value decomposition) in estimating the ischemic core. The results showed that there was a higher agreement between the Bayesian algorithm and DWI in the extended window. The more accurate estimation of the ischemic core offered by the Bayesian algorithm may play a critical role in selecting patients for reperfusion therapies.

Heterogeneous sets: a diachronic typology of associative and similative plurals

Caterina Mauri, Andrea Sanso

Summary: This paper provides a diachronic typology of heterogeneous plurals, including associative plurals and similative plurals. Based on a 110-language sample, the most recurrent sources of these two types of plurals are identified. Associative plurals develop from elements that work as set constructors, while similative plurals comprise elements with vague reference. There are also some sources that may develop into both associative and similative plurals. These differences can be explained in terms of the referential properties of the nominal bases and the discourse contexts in which the plurals are used.
