Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) has adversely affected the generations of developing countries. It is a syndrome that in severity causes death. PEM generally affects infants of 1-5 age group. This manifestation is maintained till adulthood in the form of poor brain and body development. The developing nations are continuously making an effort to curb PEM. However, it is still a prime concern as it was in its early years of occurrence. Transgenic crops with high protein and enhanced nutrient content have been successfully developed. Present article reviews the studies documenting genetic engineering-mediated improvement in the pulses, cereals, legumes, fruits and other crop plants in terms of nutritional value, stress tolerance, longevity and productivity. Such genetically engineered crops can be used as a possible remedial tool to eradicate PEM.

Molecular dynamic simulation, quantum chemical calculation and electrochemical behaviour of Punica granatum peel extract as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel (SS-410) in acidic medium

Nishant Bhardwaj, Pooja Sharma, Lei Guo, Omar Dagdag, Vineet Kumar

Summary: This study used waste from Punica granatum fruit peel to prevent corrosion of stainless steel 410 in the presence of 15% hydrochloric acid. The results showed that the peel extract had a high corrosion inhibition efficiency. Microscopy and diffraction studies confirmed the adsorption of the peel extract on the stainless steel surface. Theoretical and computational studies identified Quercetin as the main phytochemical responsible for the anti-corrosive effect.

Oryza sativa plant extract in 15% hydrochloric acid as a green corrosion inhibitor on the surface of stainless steel 410

Nishant Bhardwaj, Pooja Sharma, Vineet Kumar

Summary: This study investigated the corrosion inhibiting properties of Oryza sativa plant extract (OSPE) from agricultural residues on SS-410 steel surfaces in a 15% HCl medium. The results showed that 4 g/L OSPE achieved a maximum corrosion inhibition of 91.92%. OSPE formed a monolayer on the SS-410 surface and the anticorrosive effect could be mainly attributed to the phytochemical 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester.

Magnesium oxide nanoparticles improved vegetative growth and enhanced productivity, biochemical potency and storage stability of harvested mustard seeds

Ayushi Gautam, Priya Sharma, Sharmilla Ashokhan, Jamilah Syafawati Yaacob, Vineet Kumar, Praveen Guleria

Summary: A field study showed that priming mustard seeds with MgO-NPs enhanced plant growth and development, increasing leaf area, photosynthetic pigment accumulation, biomass, carbohydrate content, and total grain yield. It also stimulated antioxidant potential, polyphenol content, and the activity of SOD, CAT, and APX in mustard plants. However, MgO-NPs exposure reduced protein content and bioavailability. Harvested seeds from nanoprimed mustard showed increased antioxidant potential, reduced oxidative stress, enhanced carbohydrate and protein accumulation, and reduced chlorophyll content, indicating improved disease resistance and long term storage stability.
