Summary: This study evaluated the use of vertebral CT attenuation measures to predict osteoporosis in a British population. The findings suggest that routine abdominal CT can be used as an opportunistic screening method for osteoporosis without additional cost or radiation exposure. The thresholds identified in this study are comparable to previous studies in other populations and can guide further investigation.

Summary: Total joint replacement is common and increasing, but it can lead to bone loss and periprosthetic fractures, which are often overlooked by osteoporosis clinicians. This clinical review aims to raise awareness about these fractures, which are related to osteoporosis, and suggest approaches to reduce their occurrence. It emphasizes the importance of bone health evaluation after a periprosthetic fracture and the need for primary prevention through bone health assessment and optimization prior to elective orthopedic procedures.

Summary: Fractures, particularly hip and humerus fractures, are associated with increased long-term mortality risk in patients who survive to undergo baseline DXA scans. This excess mortality risk does not decline with increasing time since the fracture, indicating the importance of fracture prevention for preserving life expectancy.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence and clinical characteristics of osteoporosis in Chinese patients with PBC. The results showed that osteoporosis is very common in PBC patients, with older age, lower BMI, previous steroid therapy, and advanced liver disease being the main independent risk factors.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a prevalent skeletal disorder that decreases bone strength and increases the risk of fragility fractures. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the preferred method for evaluating bone mineral density, but clinical and technical considerations must be taken into account to avoid misdiagnosis.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of low-intensity and moderate-intensity resistance training on muscle quantity and quality in middle-aged and older adults. The results showed that moderate-intensity training improved muscle quantity and quality measured by MRI and S-BIS, while low-intensity training only increased muscle quantity.

Summary: Significant between-ethnicity calibration differences were identified in the Canadian FRAX tool, with overestimation of major osteoporotic fracture risk in Asian and Black women, as well as hip fracture risk in Asian women. The US ethnic-specific FRAX calculators partially addressed these discrepancies, particularly for MOF risk assessment, but not for hip fracture risk among Asian women.

Summary: Low bone mineral density is associated with spinal deformity, and DXA has been found to reliably assess spine alignment, especially in evaluating lumbar spine alignment. The study demonstrated excellent intra- and inter-observer reliability using DXA for Cobb angle measurements in human subjects, with good to excellent agreement between DXA and radiograph-derived Cobb angles. Lumbar spine rotation has minimal effects on BMD and BMC, and spine alignment in the coronal plane can be reliably assessed using lumbar PA DXA images.

Summary: This study found that abdominal thickness has an impact on FRAX-derived major osteoporotic fracture and hip fracture compared to BMI. The effect is stronger before the age of 65 and there is also an increased risk of lower abdominal thickness for individuals with diabetes. These findings suggest the need to investigate abdominal thickness beyond BMI and sex prediction as an independent risk factor for fracture using FRAX.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a rapid increase in virtual care use globally. However, the introduction of virtual care did not significantly increase the visit volumes during the early stages of the pandemic. The relaxation of billing requirements early in the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario was not associated with widespread and aberrant billing behaviors, indicating continued access to care for patients through the use of virtual care.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a bone disease with racial and ethnic disparities in bone outcomes. Variations in bone density, prevalence of osteoporosis and fractures, as well as disparities in screening and treatment exist across different racial and ethnic groups. Suboptimal osteoporosis management and postfracture care may be experienced by non-Hispanic black, Hispanic, and Asian populations, highlighting the need for additional population-based studies.
