Summary: Our study compared the effects of Pb exposure on morphological parameters and gut microbiota of Bufo gargarizans at different developmental stages. We found that Pb exposure significantly increased body length and weight of tadpoles, and the gut microbiota showed distinct responses to Pb exposure, with changes in diversity, community composition, and metabolic pathways.

Summary: Our study investigated the changes in toad larvae during metamorphosis and revealed the accumulation process, regulatory pathways, and synthetic site of bufadienolides (BDs), which are valuable chemical defense substances secreted by toads. We found significant lipid metabolism changes in tadpoles during metamorphosis, including ketosis, lipogenesis, cholesterol metabolism, and fatty acid oxidation, to adapt to terrestrial life. The pentose phosphate pathway and Aromatase activity may play critical roles in BD synthesis, with predominantly expressed genes in the liver.

Summary: This study analyzed the hydrological processes in the Arctic Coastal Plain and found that extreme climate events and lake water withdrawal have significant impacts on watershed hydrology. The results showed that drought scenarios had a greater reduction in streamflow than water withdrawal alone, and long-term water withdrawal resulted in a new equilibrium in low flow and seasonal runoff. The study highlights the importance of considering the combined effects of climate change and industrial water withdrawals in land management.

Summary: The carsamba aquifer in Turkey is facing overexploitation due to agricultural and industrial activities. This study investigates the seasonal variations of hydrogeochemical parameters and assesses the suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation in the coastal aquifer. The results show that seawater intrusion, rock-water interaction, and agricultural activities are the main factors impacting groundwater chemistry.

Summary: Estuaries are important ecosystems that are threatened by non-native invasive species, including submersed aquatic vegetation. Herbicides are commonly used to control this vegetation, but most evaluations have been done in lentic systems, not estuaries. A study in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta found that a widely used herbicide was not effective in controlling vegetation in this estuarine ecosystem. This highlights the need for tailored management tools for estuaries.
