Metallic corrosion can be delayed using corrosion inhibitors. However, several industrial corrosion inhibitors are toxic and harmful to the environment and to the human health. In this context, in the last decades, research has been developed to investigate the performance of low toxicity corrosion inhibitors as green inhibitors obtained from vegetables, which are environmentally acceptable. The present work studied the corrosion inhibition efficiency of peel garlic extract (Allium sativum. L.) for possible replacement of benzotriazole (BTAH) on the corrosion inhibition of ASTM 1020 carbon steel (CS-1020) in 0.5 mol.L-1 hydrochloric acid media. Weight loss measurements, anodic and cathodic potentiodynamic curves and electrochemical impedance (EIS) experiments were carried out. The Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was carried out to evaluate the chemical compounds. The morphological characterization was obtained to observe the inhibitor effect in the corrosion products on substrate surface. The results showed that the addition of both inhibitors effectively hinder the corrosion process and indicated their adsorption on the electrode surface. The inhibiting efficiency of the peel garlic extract was only slightly inferior to BTAH showing that the former inhibitor can be an environmentally friendly option to toxic inhibitors. The FTIR analysis showed the presence of chemical compounds which presents antioxidant properties.

Corrosion of carbon steel in solutions containing free chlorine in similar concentration to that used in drinking water sanitation

R. C. da Silva, H. G. de Melo

Summary: Disinfection is crucial in the production of drinking water, and free chlorine is commonly used for this purpose. Brazilian researchers investigated the corrosion resistance of ASTM A1018 steel in a solution containing 3.0 mg/L of residual free chlorine. The study revealed that the corrosion product layer formed in this solution has a bilayer structure, with an adherent magnetite layer as the internal layer and a gel-like and non-adherent lepidocrocite layer as the top layer. Electrochemical tests showed that the steel had low corrosion resistance and acted as a porous electrode, following the de Levie theory only in the high frequency region.

Effects of Mn and Microalloying Composition on Corrosion and Hydrogen-Induced Cracking of API 5L X65 Steels

Janeth Marlene Quispe-Aviles, Marco Aurelio Pereira Fiori, Duberney Hincapie-Ladino, Oscar Mauricio Prada Ramirez, Hercilio Gomes de Melo

Summary: The corrosion and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) resistance, as well as hydrogen permeation behavior, of two API 5L X65 steels with different amounts of Mn and microalloying elements were compared. The corrosion behavior of both steels showed no significant differences in each medium, but their corrosion resistance was lower in the sour medium. The low Mn steel exhibited better resistance to hydrogen-induced failures, which could be attributed to the higher content of Nb carbides.

Ce post-treatment for increased corrosion resistance of AA2024-T3 anodized in tartaric-sulfuric acid

Oscar Mauricio Prada Ramirez, Matheus Araujo Tunes, Marina Martins Mennucci, Maksim Starykevich, Cristina Neves, Mario G. S. Ferreira, Stefan Pogatscher, Hercilio Gomes De Melo

Summary: The effect of a post-treatment for a short time in 50 mM Ce(NO3)3 solution on the corrosion of AA2024-T3 anodized in tartaric-sulfuric acid was investigated. The tests showed that post-treatment at 50 degrees Celsius in an H2O2-containing solution improved the performance of the samples. Microstructural characterization revealed the presence of Ce oxy-hydroxides on the surface and within the pores of the anodized layer, indicating their preferential interaction with defective sites at both micro and nanoscale. The presence of Ce-species near corrosion products indicated active corrosion protection by Ce ions.

Cerium conversion coating and sol-gel coating for corrosion protection of the WE43 Mg alloy

Gualter Silva Pereira, Oscar Mauricio Prada Ramirez, Pedro Renato Tavares Avila, Julian Arnaldo Avila, Haroldo Cavalcanti Pinto, Marcos Hideki Miyazaki, Hercilio Gomes de Melo, Waldek Wladimir Bose Filho

Summary: This work evaluates the electrochemical behavior and morphological characterization of a system consisting of a cerium conversion layer, a hybrid sol-gel coating, and the two coatings applied sequentially (duplex) for corrosion protection of WE43 Mg alloy. Different characterization techniques showed that the previous application of the conversion coating improved the surface coverage by the hybrid coating. Fitting impedance diagrams with electrical equivalent circuits allowed proposing a physical model for the coating, demonstrating its interaction with the porous Mg oxide/hydroxide layer. Self-healing properties of the duplex coating were also revealed.

Graphene Oxide as a Corrosion Inhibitor for Steel Reinforcement in Cement Extract Containing Chlorides

Davi Ribeiro Silva, Danilo Oliveira do Nascimento, Renato Altobelli Antunes, Tarcizo Cruz C. Souza, Taiza Maria Cardoso dos Reis, Paula Cisquini, Vera Rosa Capelossi, Vanessa de Freitas Cunha Lins

Summary: This research aims to evaluate the potential of using graphene oxide modified with polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer as a corrosion inhibitor for reinforcement steel. The study incorporated 0.002 and 0.05 wt.% of graphene oxide (GO) in the cement extract and used various techniques to investigate the inhibitive effect of GO against steel corrosion. The results showed that the 1:8 ratio of GO: polycarboxylate achieved the best dispersion of GO in the cement extract, and the 0.002 wt.% GO content exhibited the most promising corrosion inhibition effect for steel in the studied environment.

Ionic liquids as potential electrolytes for sodium-ion batteries: an overview

Leandro S. Domingues, Hercilio G. de Melo, Vitor L. Martins

Summary: In this study, the use of ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is overviewed. While efforts have been made to find high-capacity and high cell potential materials, electrolyte safety is also crucial. The volatility of organic solvent-based electrolytes used in commercial systems poses a safety risk, making ILs a possible alternative. However, ILs have poor transport properties. Strategies to overcome these limitations and recent applications of ILs in SIBs are discussed, as well as the use of Na-IL mixtures in solid-state electrolytes.

Potential of electrochemical techniques (macro and microelectrodes) in fronth flotation concentration of sulfide minerals

Marina Martins Mennucci, Tatiana Mallet Machado, Vincent Vivier, Hercilio Gomes de Melo, Jean Vicente Ferrari

Summary: This paper introduces and discusses the electrochemical mechanisms of sulfide minerals, and highlights the potential of using macro and microelectrodes to study the electrochemistry of sulfide minerals. A bibliometric search reveals that there is relatively little research in this area, with the majority of articles coming from Australia, South Africa, Turkey, and Canada. Electrochemical techniques can be used to investigate the surface properties of sulfide minerals and the efficiency of flotation processes.
