Contrary to some of its relatives from Veneridae family, such as Venerupis philippinarium, the clam Eurhomalea rufa lacks doubly uniparental inheritance system of mitochondria. Here we present the argument for strict maternal inheritance of mitochondria in this species, based on next-generation sequencing of gonadal transcriptomes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Contrasting biogeographical patterns in Margarella (Gastropoda: Calliostomatidae: Margarellinae) across the Antarctic Polar Front

C. A. Gonzalez-Wevar, N. I. Segovia, S. Rosenfeld, D. Noll, C. S. Maturana, M. Hune, J. Naretto, K. Gerard, A. Diaz, H. G. Spencer, T. Saucede, J. -P. Feral, S. A. Morley, P. Brickle, N. G. Wilson, E. Poulin

Summary: Members of the trochoidean genus Margarella are broadly distributed across Antarctic and sub-Antarctic ecosystems. Analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences confirmed the presence of four species, showing contrasting biogeographic patterns on either side of the Antarctic Polar Front in the Southern Ocean. Populations north and south of the Antarctic Polar Front exhibited different levels of genetic diversity, possibly influenced by Quaternary glacial cycles.

Phylogeography and genetic diversity of the microbivalve Kidderia subquadrata, reveals new data from West Antarctic Peninsula

Daniela Levicoy, Kamilla Flores, Sebastian Rosenfeld, Leyla Cardenas

Summary: Antarctic biodiversity has been significantly influenced by rapid climatic fluctuations during the Quaternary, and studying genetic information of marine invertebrates from Antarctica reveals strong genetic structure among populations of incubating organisms and the presence of glacial refugia in organisms with limited dispersion. These findings highlight the impact of climatic fluctuations on genetic diversity distribution and evolutionary patterns of endemic organisms in the Southern Ocean.

A de novo Transcriptome Assembly of the European Flounder (Platichthys flesus): The Preselection of Transcripts Encoding Active Forms of Enzymes

Konrad Pomianowski, Artur Burzynski, Ewa Kulczykowska

Summary: Research shows that the diversity of enzyme forms in teleosts is mainly influenced by whole-genome duplication and selective mRNA splicing. By analyzing the transcriptional profiles of the European flounder in different tissues, we demonstrate how to preselect transcripts encoding active enzymes and find that the reported transcriptome is highly complete.

Seven snail species hidden in one: Biogeographic diversity in an apparently widespread periwinkle in the Southern Ocean

Claudio A. Gonzalez-Wevar, Nicolas Segovia, Sebastian Rosenfeld, Claudia S. Maturana, Vanessa Jeldres, Ramona Pinochet, Thomas Saucede, Simon A. Morley, Paul Brickle, Nerida G. Wilson, Hamish G. Spencer, Elie Poulin

Summary: The Antarctic Circumpolar Current plays a significant role in structuring the Southern Ocean biota. However, a study on the periwinkle snail genus Laevilitorina revealed an apparent exception to the biogeographic patterns, with one species having a trans-Antarctic Polar Front distribution. The molecular analysis revealed that Laevilitorina caliginosa consists of at least seven discrete species, indicating unforeseen diversity in this widespread genus.

No evidence of DUI in the Mediterranean alien species Brachidontes pharaonis (P. Fisher, 1870) despite mitochondrial heteroplasmy

Marek Lubosny, Beata Smietanka, Marco Arculeo, Artur Burzynski

Summary: Two genetically different mitochondrial haplogroups of Brachidontes pharaonis have been found in the Mediterranean Sea, but there is no recombination observed between them. Moreover, the presence of both mitochondrial genomes in the generative tissues of both sexes contradicts the possibility of doubly uniparental inheritance.

Variability at multiple spatial scales in intertidal and subtidal macrobenthic communities in a fjord with glaciers, Magellanic Subantarctic ecoregion, Chile

Francisco Bahamonde, Juan Pablo Rodriguez, Sebastian Rosenfeld, Fabio Mendez, Zambra Lopez, Karin Gerard, Andres Mansilla

Summary: The ecological patterns of macrobenthic communities in high-latitude marine environments of the Southern Hemisphere show variations at different spatial scales, mainly influenced by environmental stress gradients. In this study, the macrobenthic communities of intertidal and subtidal habitats in a glacial fjord were examined using taxonomic, ecological, and oceanographic approaches. The results revealed significant vertical patterns in taxon richness and community structure in both habitats, as well as horizontal variability at different spatial scales, with a more pronounced effect at smaller scales (quadrats). The dominant taxa in the communities also exhibited a scale-dependent distribution pattern.

Complete distribution of the genus Laevilitorina (Littorinimorpha, Littorinidae) in the Southern Hemisphere: remarks and natural history

Sebastian Rosenfeld, Claudia S. Maturana, Hamish G. Spencer, Peter Convey, Thomas Saucede, Paul Brickle, Francisco Bahamonde, Quentin Jossart, Elie Poulin, Claudio Gonzalez-Wevar

Summary: Littorinid snails are important in intertidal communities and the genus Laevilitorina is distributed exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. This study presents an updated database of 21 species, providing a comprehensive description of their known distribution. West Antarctica, New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands, and southeast shelf of Australia have the highest species richness. The study highlights the records of two species, L. pygmaea and L. venusta, which have been rarely reported before. Ongoing molecular and taxonomic studies are needed for a better understanding of the diversity and biogeography of this genus.

Genetic footprints of Quaternary glacial cycles over the patterns of population diversity and structure in three Nacella (Patellogastropoda: Nacellidae) species across the Magellan province in southern South America

Claudio A. Gonzalez-Wevar, Maria Carla de Aranzamendi, Nicolas I. Segovia, Sebastian Rosenfeld, Claudia S. Maturana, Cristian Rios Molina, Paul Brickle, Cristina N. Gardenal, Ricardo Bastida, Elie Poulin

Summary: Quaternary glaciations have had a significant impact on the geographical ranges, population sizes, genetic differentiation and speciation rates of marine benthic organisms. The Magellan province in southern South America provides an interesting area for studying the effects of glaciations on near-shore species. New population-based analyses in Nacella species show evidence of genetic bottlenecks during glacial maxima followed by recent recolonizations and expansions.
