The development of emerging digital technologies that allow the collection and analysis of field data represents a significant innovation in field-based geological studies. The integration of these digital techniques with traditional sedimentological field methods facilitates considerable improvements in outcrop characterization. An example of this integrated modern approach for geological data collection is employed for the detailed characterization of a turbidite channel-lobe system of the Gorgoglione Flysch Formation in Southern Italy. The study area, exposed above the village of Castelmezzano, has been measured and described in detailed stratigraphic sections, providing data for both sedimentological analysis and correlation of the stratigraphy. In order to gain a complete perspective on the exposure and stratigraphic elements, analysis of physical outcrop data was enhanced by the use of high-resolution Gigapixel imagery and 3D photogrammetric outcrop reconstructions. The Santa Maria section has been assessed in terms of vertical and lateral fades stacking arrangements and subdivided into two component facies associations separated by a prominent concave-up erosional boundary. The lower facies association, interpreted as a frontal lobe complex, consists of tabular, thick-bedded coarse sand-stones interbedded with persistent heterolithic packages of thin-bedded sandstones and mudstones, and minor soft-sediment deformed strata. The upper facies association represents the infill of a channel-form and consists of a basal conglomerate, passing gradually upwards into massive amalgamated sandstones overlain by large-scale cross-laminated sandstones. The excellent exposure of the Santa Maria section records the complete evolution of a channel-lobe system, transitioning from frontal lobe deposition through channel incision and bypass, to progressive backfilling. This study shows how facies characterization, stratigraphic correlations and reconstruction of the depositional architectures have been substantially enhanced by the use of emerging digital techniques for geological data collection. Coarse-grained deltas approaching shallow-water canyon heads: A case study from the Lower Pleistocene Messina Strait, Southern Italy

Sergio G. Longhitano, Domenico Chiarella, Marcello Gugliotta, Dario Ventra, Christopher Fielding

Summary: The Messina Strait in southern Italy is a tide-dominated marine passageway with steep subaqueous zones incised by canyons and gullies. This study focuses on a Lower Pleistocene coarse-grained succession exposed along the northeast margin of the strait, highlighting the presence of a subaqueous delta complex entering submerged canyon heads. Tidal-influenced sedimentation dominated over fluvial-influenced processes during the late transgression, overfilling the canyon relief and preserving large supercritical-flow sedimentary structures.

Relating seafloor geomorphology to subsurface architecture: How mass-transport deposits and knickpoint-zones build the stratigraphy of the deep-water Hikurangi Channel

Daniel E. Tek, Adam D. McArthur, Miquel Poyatos-More, Luca Colombera, Marco Patacci, Benjamin Craven, William D. McCaffrey

Summary: Monitoring of modern deep-water channels has shown how migrating channel-floor features create and remove stratigraphy, improving understanding of channel morphologies and their deposits. Integrated study of high-resolution bathymetry and seismic data imaging a trench-axial channel in New Zealand revealed terraced channel-walls, flat channel-floors, and specific features like cyclic-steps and knickpoints. Subsurface analysis identified depositional elements like channel-fill and mass-transport deposits, showing the localized response to mass-transport deposit emplacement through knickpoint-zone migration in the Hikurangi Channel.

Depositional evolution of a tectonically-confined proximal-foredeep deep-marine system: Miocene Serra Palazzo Formation (Southern Apennines, Italy)

Davide Cerone, Salvatore Gallicchio, Marco Patacci

Summary: The Miocene Serra Palazzo Formation was deposited in a foredeep basin in front of the Southern Apennines orogenic wedge. The deposition history can be divided into two phases, with tectonics playing a significant role in controlling the stacking patterns of submarine fans in the basin. This study highlights the influence of basin topography and outward thrust migration on the sedimentary features and evolution of the SPF basin.

Determination of in situ hydrocarbon contents in shale oil plays: Part 3: Quantification of light hydrocarbon evaporative loss in old cores based on preserved shales

Weijiao Ma, Jinbu Li, Min Wang

Summary: The petroleum resource assessment obtained from laboratory tests on old core samples tends to underestimate the in situ resources. This study investigates the hydrocarbon loss and restoration by comparing preserved and exposed core samples. It is found that previous studies have severely underestimated the in situ hydrocarbon potential due to factors such as sample crushing and crucible waiting. A new restoration model is proposed to compensate for these losses.

Source of quartz cement and its impact on reservoir quality in Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in central Sichuan Basin, China

Shaoyun Chen, Yongqiang Yang, Longwei Qiu, Xiaojuan Wang, Erejep Habilaxim

Summary: Quartz cement is an important authigenic mineral in the tight sandstones of the Shaximiao Formation in the Sichuan Basin. This study analyzed the silicon sources of the quartz cement using mineralogical, fluid inclusion, and geochemical data. The results showed that smectite alteration and dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals were the primary sources of silicon for quartz cementation. Contributions from volcanic material hydrolysis and pressure solution were relatively minor. The presence of chlorite films inhibited the development of quartz overgrowths and had minimal impact on reservoir quality.

Summary: This study employs an integrated depositional and sequence stratigraphic approach to assess the control of diagenesis on reservoir porosity of a hybrid-energy delta system. The study focuses on the Barik Formation in the Haushi-Huqf region of Central Oman, which represents a highstand system tract of a hybrid-energy delta. The assessments reveal that the reservoir porosity is controlled by various degrees of diagenetic processes, including mechanically infiltrated clays and kaolinitization of silicate grains.

Source rock potential and spatial distribution of the stratigraphic formations in the central Mediterranean Ridge: Evidence from mud volcanic deposits and 2D seismic data

Summary: Due to the lack of deep wells in the broader region, studying mud volcanic deposits can improve the geological understanding of the Mediterranean Ridge. In this study, biostratigraphic and geochemical analyses were performed on mud breccia deposits from five Mud Volcanoes in the central MR. The results indicate the origin of these deposits and provide insights into the source rock potential. Seismic data is also used to determine the distribution of major lithostratigraphic formations.
