Petroleum exploration in many North African intracratonic basins targets Early Paleozoic sandstones as the primary reservoir objective. These sandstones are often characterized by highly variable reservoir quality (0.0001-1000 mD), and the ability to predict and selectively target areas of enhanced porosity and permeability is crucial to unlock the hydrocarbon potential. The objective of this study is to characterize the primary controls on reservoir quality in an Ordovician field in the Illizi Basin of Algeria through detailed core and petrographic analysis, and establish if variations in thermal history across the field have a material impact on reservoir quality. The best reservoir quality is observed in fades where primary intergranular porosity has been preserved in fine to coarse grained quartzarenites with less than 1% fibrous illite. These lithologies are most commonly found within the high-energy, tidally reworked, post-glacial facies sandstones of the uppermost Ordovician succession. Observed differences in quartz cement volume within compositionally and texturally similar samples from the southern and northern parts of the field are interpreted to reflect variations in thermal exposure due to deeper burial. This interpretation is supported by field-wide numerical modelling of sandstone diagenesis. This study indicates that subtle variations in thermal history can have a material impact on the spatial trends in reservoir permeability. Thermal history, therefore, is an important consideration in reservoir quality studies in exhumed basins where variations in present-day burial depth will be a poor guide for evaluating reservoir quality risk across a basin or play. Cretaceous continental margin evolution revealed using quantitative seismic geomorphology, offshore northwest Africa

Max Casson, Gerome Calves, Mads Huuse, Ben Sayers, Jonathan Redfern

Summary: The application of high-resolution seismic geomorphology and lithological data offshore The Gambia documents a complex tectono-stratigraphic history through the Cretaceous, revealing the spatial-temporal evolution of submarine canyons and estimating the intra- versus extra-basinal sediment budget. The evolution of the continental margin from the Jurassic to Aptian is characterized by carbonate escarpment development followed by the first major siliciclastic sediment delivery during the Albian age, linked to hinterland exhumation events. Submarine canyonisation initiated at the palaeo-shelf edge, controlled by lithological contrast, and lasted for approximately 28 million years, dissecting the inherited seascape topography.

Remi Charton, Giovanni Bertotti, Aude Duval Arnould, Jonathan Redfern, Joep E. A. Storms

Summary: This study integrates over 30 published Low Temperature Thermochronology and time-Temperature modelling studies from Morocco and its surroundings to investigate the exhumation, erosion rates, and palaeoreconstructions of source-to-sink domains in the Atlantic realm. Summary: Passive margins, traditionally seen as tectonically quiescent, exhibit significant post-rift tectonic uplift that influences sediment delivery. The study integrates field observations, well data, and petrographic analysis to establish a coherent sedimentological model, providing insights into regional versus local tectonostratigraphic evolution. The role of hinterland tectonic movements during a passive margin phase is highlighted, triggering forced regressions in response to eustasy effects.

Syn-depositional Mesozoic siliciclastic pathways on the Moroccan Atlantic margin linked to evaporite mobilisation

Remi Charton, Christian Kluge, David Fernandez-Blanco, Aude Duval-Arnould, Orrin Bryers, Jonathan Redfern, Giovanni Bertotti

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of evaporite mobilisation and tectonic evolution on sediment pathways in the Essaouira-Agadir Basin in Morocco. The results show the importance of syn-sedimentary evaporite tectonics on basin morphology and sediment distribution, particularly influencing the delivery of clastics by fluvial systems and deepwater processes. This knowledge is crucial for predicting reservoir presence on the eastern margin of the Central Atlantic Ocean and its conjugate margin in Nova Scotia.

Summary: This study describes extensive coral-rich bodies deposited on the Moroccan northwest Atlantic shallow-marine margin during the Cretaceous. The results provide information on driving processes for coral development, temporal evolution, and environmental factors affecting coral growth. The termination of coral deposition is marked by a hardground surface, indicating slow rates of sedimentation and a transgression, leading to deterioration of the carbonate platform health.

Identifying local vs. regional drainage using multiproxy provenance tracers-Tracking the Moroccan Late Triassic fluvial system

Summary: The Kerrouchen Basin is an understudied rift basin in the Middle Atlas of Morocco, where two distinct fluvial systems, K3 and K4, have been recorded. The K3 system shows a predominant drainage direction towards the north-north-east, while the K4 system records drainage to the southwest. Heavy mineral and petrographic analysis indicates different sedimentary provenances for these fluvial systems. This study has important implications for paleo-geographic reconstructions and future exploration efforts in Morocco.

Determination of in situ hydrocarbon contents in shale oil plays: Part 3: Quantification of light hydrocarbon evaporative loss in old cores based on preserved shales

Weijiao Ma, Jinbu Li, Min Wang

Summary: The petroleum resource assessment obtained from laboratory tests on old core samples tends to underestimate the in situ resources. This study investigates the hydrocarbon loss and restoration by comparing preserved and exposed core samples. It is found that previous studies have severely underestimated the in situ hydrocarbon potential due to factors such as sample crushing and crucible waiting. A new restoration model is proposed to compensate for these losses.

Source of quartz cement and its impact on reservoir quality in Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in central Sichuan Basin, China

Shaoyun Chen, Yongqiang Yang, Longwei Qiu, Xiaojuan Wang, Erejep Habilaxim

Summary: Quartz cement is an important authigenic mineral in the tight sandstones of the Shaximiao Formation in the Sichuan Basin. This study analyzed the silicon sources of the quartz cement using mineralogical, fluid inclusion, and geochemical data. The results showed that smectite alteration and dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals were the primary sources of silicon for quartz cementation. Contributions from volcanic material hydrolysis and pressure solution were relatively minor. The presence of chlorite films inhibited the development of quartz overgrowths and had minimal impact on reservoir quality.

Summary: This study employs an integrated depositional and sequence stratigraphic approach to assess the control of diagenesis on reservoir porosity of a hybrid-energy delta system. The study focuses on the Barik Formation in the Haushi-Huqf region of Central Oman, which represents a highstand system tract of a hybrid-energy delta.
