We herein report a fatal intoxication case caused by the ingestion of the insecticides chlorpyrifos-methyl (CPFM) and fenitrothion (MEP). A 70-year-old man was found dead in his house and a cup containing a small amount of agricultural chemicals was on the table near his body. External and internal examinations revealed no injuries. In a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC MS) screening test, CPFM, MEP, and their metabolites, 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPY) and 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (3MNP), respectively, were qualitatively detected in his stomach contents. The concentrations (mu g/g) of CPFM, TCPY, MEP, and 3MNP in the extracts of each body fluid and organ tissue were assessed by GC MS and were as follows: 27.8, 56.2, 17.2, and 2.82 (heart blood); 6.60, 42.9, 1.80, and 2.59 (peripheral blood); 0.0821, 45.9, 2,09, and 102 (urine); 21.4, 26.6, 76.2, and 3.83 (brain (frontal portion)); 16.1, 101, 9.67, and 1.26 (liver); 7.45, 101, 21.4, and 26.1 (right kidney); and 73,500, 9750, 232,000, and 1880 (stomach contents), respectively. Based on these results and autopsy findings, the cause of death was acute fatal intoxication by CPFM and MEP.

Complete decapitation by a self-constructed guillotine in a burned body-complex suicide or postmortem burning?

Akiko Ishigami, Satoshi Hata, Yuko Ishida, Mizuho Nosaka, Yumi Kuninaka, Hiroki Yamamoto, Emi Shimada, Yumiko Hashizume, Tatsunori Takayasu, Akihiko Kimura, Fukumi Furukawa, Toshikazu Kondo

Summary: This is a rare case of complete decapitation suicide using a self-constructed guillotine, with the body severely burned. The cause of death was determined to be cervical transection, with suspicion that the severed head was accidentally burned by a fire from a car accident.

Intrathrombotic appearances of AQP-1 and AQP-3 in relation to thrombus age in murine deep vein thrombosis model

Mizuho Nosaka, Yuko Ishida, Yumi Kuninaka, Akiko Ishigami, Akira Taruya, Emi Shimada, Yumiko Hashizume, Hiroki Yamamoto, Akihiko Kimura, Fukumi Furukawa, Toshikazu Kondo

Summary: The study used a mouse deep vein thrombosis model to investigate the intrathrombotic expression of AQP-1 and AQP-3, finding that the changes in AQP-1 and AQP-3 within the thrombus at different time points could help determine the age of the thrombus.

Summary: Japan, a mountainous country surrounded by the sea, has the second-highest rate of drowning deaths in the world. Pleural effusion is a major finding in autopsy cases of drowning, with a significant impact on diagnosis. Research suggests that the PE ratio may be more effective for diagnosing drowning cases.

Bone Marrow-Derived Cells and Wound Age Estimation

Yuko Ishida, Mizuho Nosaka, Toshikazu Kondo

Summary: Appropriate technology and target cells and molecules are crucial factors for determining wound vitality or wound age in forensic practice. In this study, bone marrow-derived cells were investigated as promising markers and their potential usefulness in estimating wound age was examined. The evaluation of the appearance combination of these cells and other markers may provide a more objective and accurate estimation of wound age.

Forensic Application of Epidermal Ubiquitin Expression to Determination of Wound Vitality in Human Compressed Neck Skin

Siying Zhang, Yuko Ishida, Akiko Ishigami, Mizuho Nosaka, Yumi Kuninaka, Satoshi Hata, Hiroki Yamamoto, Yumiko Hashizume, Jumpei Matsuki, Haruki Yasuda, Akihiko Kimura, Fukumi Furukawa, Toshikazu Kondo

Summary: In this study, the expression of ubiquitin in neck skin samples was examined using immunohistochemistry, revealing a decreased expression in the compression regions, possibly due to impaired conversion and synthesis caused by compression. This finding suggests that immunohistochemical examination of ubiquitin expression in neck skin can serve as a valuable marker for diagnosing antemortem compression.

Summary: This study investigated the gene expression dynamics of M1 and M2 macrophage markers during skin wound healing in mice. The results showed that M1 macrophage markers peaked at 1-3 days after injury, while M2 macrophage markers peaked at 6 days after injury. The analysis of human wound specimens revealed that a M1/M2 ratio greater than 3.0 could indicate a wound age of 1-5 days.

Essential Involvement of Neutrophil Elastase in Acute Acetaminophen Hepatotoxicity Using BALB/c Mice

Yuko Ishida, Siying Zhang, Yumi Kuninaka, Akiko Ishigami, Mizuho Nosaka, Isui Harie, Akihiko Kimura, Naofumi Mukaida, Toshikazu Kondo

Summary: Intense neutrophil infiltration is a characteristic of acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury. In this study, the efficacy of a specific neutrophil elastase inhibitor, sivelestat, was investigated in mice with acetaminophen-induced liver injury. Treatment with sivelestat resulted in improved survival, reduced liver damage, decreased NOS-II expression, and diminished neutrophil infiltration. These findings suggest a new clinical application for sivelestat in the treatment of acetaminophen-induced liver failure.

Summary: Fibrosis and structural remodeling of lung tissue can seriously impact lung function and have fatal consequences. The causes of pulmonary fibrosis (PF) vary, including allergens, chemicals, radiation, and environmental particles. The cause of idiopathic PF (IPF), one of the most common forms, is still unknown. The murine bleomycin (BLM) model has been extensively studied to understand the mechanisms of PF.

Summary: This study investigates the association between in vivo cholesterol crystals (CCs) detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the no-reflow phenomenon after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The results show that the combination of the number of CCs and lipid arc can predict the no-reflow phenomenon after PCI with a high accuracy of 86%.
