Although the association between exposure to asbestos and malignant mesothelioma (particularly malignant pleural mesothelioma) has been well established, the health impact of environmental exposure (EE) to asbestos has been less studied. This review summarizes the most recent studies on the association between malignant mesothelioma and EE with asbestos to identify features associated with EE and quantify the association with malignant mesothelioma. There were 44 studies from 18 countries that met our selection criteria, with a considerable amount of heterogeneity in their study design, measures of exposure, and health outcomes. The male-to-female ratio was close to or less than 1 and generally lower than the ratio reported when both occupational and environmental exposures were considered. Although recent studies have continued to improve our understanding of environmental exposure to asbestos, challenges remain. We have highlighted a few new research directions, such as a need for reliable matrices to identify common and less recognized types of EE, asbestos biomarker studies specifically focusing on EE, and research on populations and geographic areas that have not been previously studied. Summary: As part of a large human biomonitoring study, occupational monitoring was conducted in a glass fibre factory in Slovakia, comparing the exposure of shopfloor workers and administrators to glass fibres and PAHs. The study investigated the impact of exposure on various genetic factors and found that even low levels of exposure to these fibres can cause significant genetic damage.

Summary: The comet assay is a versatile method for detecting various types of DNA damage in individual eukaryotic cells. It has been widely used in research, industry, and regulatory agencies, and has been adopted as an in vivo test for genotoxicity. The present document provides consensus protocols for applying the comet assay to different cell types, species, and types of DNA damage.

Occupational exposure to pesticides: DNA damage in horticulturist from Nativitas, Tlaxcala in Mexico

Sanchez-Alarcon Juana, Milic Mirta, Bonassi Stefano, Gomez-Arroyo Sandra, Cortes- Eslava Josefina, Flores-Marquez Ana Rosa, Valencia- Quintana Rafael Alexander, Valencia-Quintana Rafael

Summary: Mexico is an agriculturally important country with limited biomonitoring data. High pesticide use in horticultural productivity leads to environmental contamination and risks to workers' health. The study shows that horticulturists have significantly higher genetic damage compared to unexposed controls, indicating the need for protective measures and educational programs to prevent health risks.

Effect of Air Pollution on the Basal DNA Damage of Mother-Newborn Couples of México City

Mahara Valverde, Adriana Granados, Mirta Milic, Marcello Ceppi, Leticia Sollano, Stefano Bonassi, Emilio Rojas

Summary: DNA damage in newborn children's cord blood cells from Mexico City is correlated with the DNA damage in their mothers, as well as the environmental exposure and complications during pregnancy. Mothers living in the southern part of the city have double DNA damage compared to those living in the northern part. This study highlights the importance of antioxidants during pregnancy and the role of the placental barrier in protecting newborns from DNA-damaging effects of pollution.
