Summary: Inflammation is closely related to cancer, and NLR from routine blood testing serves as an easily accessible prognostic biomarker, aiding in assessing clinical outcomes in colorectal cancer patients. Combining results from numerous studies, high NLR was found to be associated with poor clinical outcomes, despite limitations in some studies, it should be routinely collected in clinical trials.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prognostic role of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in stage II to III colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent surgery. The results showed that NLR was significantly associated with overall survival (OS) and could be used as a simple and useful parameter for predicting OS in these patients.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic value of baseline peripheral blood neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes on locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients. Results indicate that the peripheral blood immune score (PBIS) is an independent predictor of LARC prognosis. High PBIS and high lymphocyte count are favorable factors for survival.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinicopathological relevance of GRP94 expression in patients with advanced colorectal cancer with distant metastases. Results showed that high GRP94 expression was more common in patients with a higher density of CD4+ TILs in the synchronous metastases group and served as an independent prognostic factor only in this group.

Summary: Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an important index for systemic inflammation and a prognostic indicator for gastric cancer (GC). This study analyzed the role of NLR in different prognostic models and subgroups, and investigated the mediating effects of immune infiltrates between NLR and survival.

Summary: This study summarizes the role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in epilepsy. The findings indicate that NLR levels are higher in patients with epilepsy during the acute and subacute phases compared to healthy controls. There is also a significant difference in NLR between the acute and subacute phases. Inflammation plays a role in epilepsy, and elevated NLR can serve as a biomarker for inflammation and epilepsy.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the prognostic ability of Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in predicting in-hospital mortality among sepsis patients. The optimal cutoff for NLR was found to be 14.20, with patients above this cutoff having a lower chance of survival. However, after adjusting for confounders, there was no association between NLR and in-hospital mortality.

Summary: This study analyzed the levels of peripheral blood NLR in 203 patients with early cervical cancer and evaluated the relationship between NLR changes, clinicopathological characteristics, and patient prognosis. The study found that high preoperative NLR was associated with shorter overall survival and high postoperative NLR was associated with lower progression-free survival. Postmenopausal patients and those without vascular infiltration had higher rates of NLR increase. Further multicenter studies are needed to verify the effect of NLR changes on the prognosis of cervical cancer patients.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic changes of immune cells in patients with EHS and found that increased neutrophils and decreased lymphocytes were associated with poor prognosis. The lymphocyte count at 72 hours after admission was the most important prognostic factor.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 991 ovarian cancer patients and found that the lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet to neutrophil ratio (PNR) were independent prognostic indicators of ovarian cancer. In contrast, the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) had limited prognostic value. In conclusion, LMR and PNR are superior prognostic indicators in ovarian cancer.

Summary: Inflammatory conditions affect colorectal cancer patients and hinder their ongoing treatment. This study shows that inflammation interferes with the anti-tumor immune response and inhibits the effectiveness of immune checkpoint blockade therapy. The research also indicates that inflammatory conditions and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio are clinical features associated with poor response to immune checkpoint inhibitors in MSI-H CRCs.

Summary: This study found that circulating tumor cells (CTCs), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) can serve as potential prognostic factors for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The presence of CTCs was significantly associated with age, PLR, and NLR values, while NLR, PLR, and CTC counts were significantly associated with progression-free survival in metastatic CRC patients.

Summary: This study analyzed the ability of inflammatory markers such as neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and a new marker called NP/LHb (combining SII and hemoglobin concentration) as diagnostic tools for colorectal cancer (CRC). The researchers found that NP/LHb had high specificity and positive predictive value for diagnosing CRC and could be useful in early diagnosis. Significant differences were also observed in these markers according to CRC-related variables.

Summary: This study investigated the combination of serum albumin concentrations and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios to create a score (ANS), which can predict the prognosis of biliary tract cancer patients before surgery. The results showed that the ANS score can independently predict postoperative survival and guide treatment strategies for patients with biliary tract cancer.

Summary: Introduction: Prescription opioids, including those prescribed after surgery, have greatly contributed to the US opioid epidemic. Educating opioid prescribers is a crucial component of ensuring the safe use of opioids among surgical patients. This study implemented an annual education curriculum for new surgical prescribers, resulting in significant improvements in knowledge and comfort levels. However, there remains a persistent knowledge and comfort gap among these prescribers.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using humanized anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibodies conjugated with near-infrared dyes to specifically label gastric cancers in mouse models. Orthotopic models showed bright and specific labeling with more than ten times higher tumor-to-background ratios compared to the control. This tumor-specific fluorescent antibody has promising potential as a clinical tool for improving visualization of gastric cancer margins during surgical resection.

Summary: This scoping review analyzed the literature on the use of broadband personality tests in the bariatric surgical population to optimize weight loss outcomes. The study found significant associations between personality scales and weight loss, but inconsistent reporting of outcome measures made it challenging to draw concrete conclusions. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommends standardization of outcome reporting to improve the reliability of predicting weight loss outcomes.
