Summary: The concept of health system resilience has been challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, and even resilient health systems collapsed during this crisis. A qualitative study with 26 international experts was conducted to revisit the concept of resilience and explore their views on various aspects of health system resilience in high-income countries and low-and-middle-income countries. The study findings suggest that the pandemic has modified experts' perspectives on health system resilience and propose refinements to the current understanding.

Summary: Pharyngolaryngectomy with total esophagectomy (PLTE) is a challenging procedure for patients with synchronous head and neck cancer and thoracic esophageal cancer. Different reconstruction methods were compared in 65 patients, showing that additional procedures like microvascular anastomosis, gastric tube elongation, and free jejunum transfer can improve outcomes after PLTE.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate long-term health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and symptom evolution after esophagectomy. The study found that esophagectomy was associated with decreased HRQOL and persistent gastrointestinal symptoms. Dysphagia improved over time, while weight loss scores showed nonstatistical improvement. Other symptoms remained constant. HRQOL did not improve after one year post-surgery, but long-term survivors demonstrated comparable or improved HRQOL compared to the general population.

Summary: This study evaluated the protocol-driven use of UGI contrast study in esophagectomy patients to facilitate early removal of nasogastric tube. The results showed that targeted contrast study can lead to earlier NGT removal, reduced hospital stay, and successful intervention for patients with delayed gastric conduit emptying.
