Summary: This study demonstrated the accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosing CPPD, with the highest sensitivity and specificity achieved by assessing the medial meniscus and medial condyle hyaline cartilage in combination. There were no differences in terms of inflammation between patients with CPPD and OA and those with OA alone.

Summary: The aim of this study was to report the prevalence of CT-detected intra-articular mineralization. It was found that 9.8% of knees had intra-articular mineralization based on CT imaging. Mineralization predominantly occurred in the three compartments of the joint, especially the patellofemoral compartment.

Summary: This study aimed to compare and define the clinical and pathologic features of CPPD in total hip, knee, and shoulder arthroplasties. Results showed that the incidence of CPPD was significantly higher in knees and shoulders than in hips, and patients with CPPD were typically older, highlighting the importance of pathological examination for diagnosis.

Summary: In knee osteoarthritis (KOA), musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS) can effectively detect various abnormalities and monitor responses to different therapies, guiding diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The application of continuously evolving US tools in the future could enhance the clinical utility of MSUS in KOA.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of knee effusion on the progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in patients with early OA. The results showed that female sex, early OA, body mass index, and effusion area were significantly associated with OA progression. Overweight women with more severe effusion had a higher risk of OA progression compared to non-overweight individuals.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of colchicine for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). The study found that colchicine did not show significant benefits in reducing pain and improving physical function compared to placebo or other active comparators. The results suggest that future trials should focus on subgroups of OA patients with inflammation and mineralization who might benefit from colchicine.

Summary: This systematic review examined the clinical characteristics of patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis selected for ultrasound-guided genicular nerve blocks (GNB), as well as the different techniques and pharmacological agents used during the procedure. The primary outcomes of pain and function were evaluated. The review found that targeting the superior medial, superior lateral, and inferior medial genicular nerves using local anesthetics, corticosteroids, or alcohol can effectively reduce pain and improve knee function in patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis under ultrasound guidance. More research is needed to determine the optimal approach.

Summary: This study aimed to identify ultrasound-detectable changes in the knee that are often associated with knee symptoms and demonstrate the feasibility of early diagnosis in symptomatic knee OA using ultrasound. The study found that among the knee ultrasound-detectable changes, osteophytes were strongly associated with knee symptoms. Osteophytes are reliable predictors of symptomatic early knee OA, even in participants with few radiographic OA changes.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between dynamic medial meniscus extrusion (MME) and knee pain. The results showed a significant correlation between Delta MME and visual analog scale (VAS) only in the dynamic condition. This suggests that dynamic evaluation is a valid tool for understanding the mechanisms of knee pain and the behavior of the medial meniscus in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Summary: Early diagnosis and tight control improve outcomes of rheumatoid arthritis. This study compared the effectiveness and costs of an early arthritis clinic (EAC) with the current standard of care. The results showed that despite higher costs, the EAC reduced the number and length of hospitalizations and had higher adherence to quality-of-care guidelines.

Summary: Cryoglobulinemic vasculitis is a small-vessel vasculitis characterized by the proliferation of B-cell clones producing pathogenic immune complexes. It is often secondary to hepatitis C virus, autoimmune diseases, and hematological malignancies. The clinical course of cryoglobulinemic vasculitis is usually mild, but severe organ damage and life-threatening manifestations can occur.

Summary: This study assessed the reliability and diagnostic accuracy of new radiographic imaging definitions developed by an international multidisciplinary working group for identification of calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD). The results showed that the new radiographic definitions have high specificity for the diagnosis of CPPD, but the sensitivity remains low for all sites and the overall diagnosis.

Summary: This study aimed to develop an OMERACT ultrasonography score for monitoring disease activity in giant cell arteritis (GCA) and evaluate its metric properties. The study followed the OMERACT Instrument Selection Algorithm and conducted Delphi rounds and online reliability exercise. The results showed that the OGUS had good reliability and sensitivity in assessing disease activity in GCA and could be used in clinical trials.

Summary: Several studies show that age at onset has an impact on the clinical-serological presentation, comorbidities and disease course of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study evaluated the correlation between age at onset and clinical-serological manifestations and comorbidities in patients with recent onset SLE. The results showed that early onset SLE had a more active immunological profile, while late onset SLE had a higher incidence of comorbidities.
