Transected sciatic nerve repair by diode laser protein soldering

Background and Objective: Despite advances in microsurgical techniques, repair of peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) is still a major challenge in regenerative medicine. The standard treatment for PNI includes suturing and anasthomosis of the transected nerve. The objective of this study was to compare neurorraphy (nerve repair) using standard suturingto diode laser protein soldering on the functional recovery of transected sciatic nerves. Study Design/Materials and Methods: Thirty adult male Fischer-344 Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups: 1. The control group, no repair, 2. the standard of care suture group, and 3. The laser/protein solder group. For all three groups, the sciatic nerve was transected and the repair was done immediately. For the suture repair group, 10.0 prolene suture was used and for the laser/protein solder group a diode laser (500 mW output power) in combination with bovine serum albumen and indocyanine green dye was used. Behavioral assessment by sciatic functional index was done on all rats biweekly. At 12 weeks post-surgery, EMG recordings were done on all the rats and the rats were euthanized for histological evaluation of the sciatic nerves. The one-way ANOVA test was used for statistical analysis. Results: The average time required to perform the surgery was significantly shorter for the laser-assisted nerve repair group compared to the suture group. The EMG evaluation revealed no difference between the two groups. Based on the sciatic function index the laser group was significantly better than the suture group after 12 weeks (p < 0.05). Histopathologic evaluation indicated that the epineurium recovery was better in the laser group (p < 0.05). There was no difference in the inflammation between the suture and laser groups. Conclusion: Based on this evidence, laser/protein nerve soldering is a more efficient and efficacious method for repair of nerve injury compared to neurorraphy using standard suturing methods.

Efficacy of Nd:YAG laser-assisted periodontal therapy for the management of periodontitis: A double-blind split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial

Effect of red and near-infrared irradiation on periodontal ligament stem cells: ROS generation and cell cycle analysis

Summary: The use of tissue engineering in dentistry for reconstructing lost tooth structures and periodontium has shown great therapeutic success. Photobiomodulation using red and near-infrared lasers can enhance the viability of periodontal ligament stem cells and affect ROS production and cell cycle, with greater effects observed in the pulsed mode of 940 nm irradiation.

Effect of photobiomodulation therapy with different wavelengths on bone mineral density in osteoporotic rats

Summary: This study assessed the effect of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) with different wavelengths on bone mineral density (BMD) and found it to be effective for enhancing BMD and biomechanical properties. The study evaluated 63 adult female rats and found that PBMT with wavelengths of 660 nm, 810 nm, and 940 nm at a constant energy density of 4 J/cm(2) significantly improved BMD and biomechanical properties.

Efficacy of Adjunctive Photobiomodulation in the Management of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: A Systematic Review

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy of photobiomodulation (PBM) as an adjunct therapy for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The results indicated that PBM can significantly improve the outcomes of MRONJ treatment, although surgical intervention is still recommended for complete healing of the lesions.

Photobiomodulation therapy in mood disorders: a systematic review

Summary: The effect of near infrared laser irradiation on proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of buccal fat pad-derived stem cells and the role of transient receptor potential channels were investigated in this study. The results showed that pulsed laser irradiation had the best cell viability and promoted osteogenic differentiation. Furthermore, Capsazepine inhibited the osteogenic differentiation of the cells.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy and soft acrylic wafer for reducing pain during orthodontic bracket removal. The results showed that the laser group had significantly lower pain scores compared to the other groups. Amplifying bactericidal activity: Surfactant-mediated AgBr thin film coating over two-dimensional vertically aligned ZnO nanorods for dark-light dual mode disinfection

Summary: Thin film coatings with potent antibacterial properties are widely used in medical devices, frequently touched surfaces, and food packaging. However, achieving antibacterial performance under both light and dark conditions remains a challenge. In this study, we successfully prepared AgBr-coated ZnO nanorod thin film architecture using a unique surfactant-mediated solution-phase spin-coating approach. The resulting structures showed dual functionality as antimicrobial agents and photosensitizers, effectively enhancing the visible-light photodisinfection efficacy of ZnO nanorods. The concentration of the surfactant-based precursor solution could be modulated to control the AgBr content. Additionally, components like urea and lactic acid were found to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of the structures.
