Summary: The mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties of biodegradable films composed of gelatin/chitosan blends with and without betel leaf ethanolic extract (BLEE) were investigated. The addition of BLEE improved the elasticity and heat-seal ability of the films, while the seal ability decreased with increasing chitosan proportion. Films containing 2% BLEE exhibited enhanced ultraviolet and visible light barrier abilities and reduced water vapor permeability. The incorporation of BLEE also led to decreased swelling and water solubility of the films, increased antioxidant and antibacterial activities, and improved thermal stability. Therefore, gelatin/chitosan films containing BLEE could serve as active packaging materials with satisfactory properties.

Summary: Based on data from The Global Burden of Disease Study in 2016, dental and oral health problems, especially dental caries, affect almost half of the world's population. One of the main causes of dental caries is the pathogenesis of Streptococcus mutans. Prevention can be achieved by controlling S. mutans using an antibacterial agent. However, long-term use of chlorhexidine, the most commonly used antibacterial for dental caries, may lead to resistance and side effects. Therefore, the discovery of a natural antibacterial agent is urgently needed. Piper crocatum Ruiz and Pav has the potential to be used as a natural antibacterial agent for dental and oral health problems, as it contains active compounds that are effective against S. mutans.

Summary: This study explored the use of microwave-aided extraction technique as an alternative to conventional extraction techniques in order to address the issues of long extraction time, low color yield, and colorfastness associated with natural dyes. The extraction parameters for cocoa leaf were optimized and the dyeing conditions for achieving desired color strength and colorfastness on wool fabric were varied. The colorimetric properties of the microwave-aided cocoa leaf extract dyed wool fabrics were compared to those of conventionally dyed fabrics. The use of microwave irradiation increased dye yield, reduced extraction time, and improved tint yield. The optimal dyeing conditions were determined, and post-mordanting with chemical-mordants and herbal-anchors further enhanced the color strength and colorfastness of the dyed fabric. The dyed fabrics also exhibited improved antioxidant, antibiotic, and ultraviolet protection properties, making them suitable for healthcare applications. The findings suggest that microwave-assisted cocoa leaf extract has the potential to be a sustainable colorant for producing healthcare wears.

Summary: This study aimed to produce multi-functional active film by adding Sonneratia ovata leaf extract (SOE) and Piper betel L. oil (PBLO) to polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PCs). The results showed that the SOE-added PCs film had a compact structure and exhibited lower swelling degree and higher mechanical strength compared to the neat PCs. The co-supplementation of PBLO increased the swelling degree due to the more open structure and improved the UV-barrier, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of the PCs film.

Summary: The study focused on the differences in immune response to nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) between domestic silkworm and wild silkworm, with the latter showing no documented infection by NPV; Through proteomic analysis, the upregulation of myotubularin-related protein (MTMR6) and serpin-like protein was observed at 72 hours post infection in the wild silkworm, suggesting their involvement in host immunity and suppression of viral replication. This observation was further confirmed by qPCR studies showing a decrease in viral load in the wild silkworms from 72 hours post infection.

Summary: Laboratory illumination is strong enough to create a photostationary state (PSS) of amphiphilic azo-benzene compounds in water. The [cis]PSS/[trans]PSS ratios were observed to be 0.33-1.2 in D2O and 0.37-3.8 in dimethyl sulfoxide-d6. ortho-Fluoroazobenzene amphiphiles show higher cis-isomer concentration at equilibrium compared to non-fluorinated compounds due to differences in optical absorption profiles. The kinetics of isomerization were measured using UV-Vis spectroscopy and the ratio of trans-to-cis rates does not directly correlate with the observed PSS. The half-life for PSS formation is 40 minutes for fluorinated compounds and 80 minutes for non-fluorinated compounds.

Experimental characterization and theoretical simulation confirmed the three-in-one synergy of the integrated heterostructure, including the LSPR effect of Au nanoparticles, the light scattering based on core-shell heterostructure, and the effective charge separation based on inter-embedded heterostructure. The concept of integrated heterostructure cooperated with LSPR effect provides a new strategy for designing future catalysts.

It was also shown that the recombination of labile SIRS is independent of the nature of the atmosphere. Summary: Bifunctional hybrids containing photochromic indolyl(thienyl) diarylethenes and an ionochromic rhodamine moiety connected by a dimethylene spacer were synthesized. These hybrids exhibit absorption at 450-455 nm and fluorescence at 560 nm in toluene. UV light triggers ring-closed non-fluorescent diarylethene formation, which can be reversed under visible light or in the dark. In the presence of H+ cation, a naked eye effect is observed with the opening of the rhodamine-spirolactam ring and a pink-crimson coloration at 561 nm accompanied by intense long-wavelength emission at 586 nm. This process is reversible by exposure to triethylamine, as confirmed by NMR experiments. The light-induced isomerizations and proton-induced transformations were explained using computational methods. Reversible switching of fluorescent properties can be achieved by light irradiation and proton.
