Summary: This study found that blast-exposure may lead to traumatic brain injury and result in post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Blast-exposed individuals reported higher levels of PTSD and PCS symptoms, as well as white-matter hypoconnectivity. These findings suggest a combined biopsychological disorder with a wide range of symptoms.

Summary: The TRACK-TBI LONG study demonstrates that outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI) can vary greatly over a period of 7 years. While some patients remain in a stable condition, about one-third experience declines in cognitive, psychiatric, and functional state. These findings highlight the chronic nature of TBI and call for a change in its management.

Summary: The study found significant differences in cognitive and behavioral health outcomes between mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) that occur in a deployment environment and those that occur outside of deployment. Deployment TBIs were associated with poorer cognitive performance, PTSD, depressive symptoms, pain interference, and poorer sleep quality, while nondeployment TBIs were only associated with poorer sleep quality. PTSD had the strongest associations with symptom measures, and deployment TBIs had the strongest associations with cognitive outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated the difference in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cavitation between blasts and impacts, and proposed a mechanism explaining the lower negative pressure produced by blasts in the contrecoup CSF region. Experimental results and computational modeling validated this mechanism. These findings have significant implications for the prevention and diagnosis of blast-induced traumatic brain injury.

Summary: This study found a significant association between PTSD symptom severity and levels of circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines in military service members with a history of TBI, suggesting unique cytokine profiles related to neurobehavioral outcomes associated with TBI and PTSD in the military TBI population.

Summary: The configuration of animal holders used in blast exposure studies significantly affects outcomes, with enclosed holders potentially causing secondary damage to the contralateral eye and open holders potentially damaging the brain through rapid head movement.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of traumatic brain injury and blast exposure on functional brain connectomes in post-deployment, combat-exposed veterans. Results indicated significant interactions between blast-related mild TBI and PTSD, with a main effect of blast-related mild TBI on the functional brain connectomes.

Summary: This study compared subjective memory complaints in veterans with and without a history of mTBI, finding that comorbid PTSD symptoms are important when considering memory complaints. Independent of PTSD symptoms, mTBI status-particularly in the context of repetitive neurotrauma-uniquely contributes to memory complaints.

Summary: The study found that breachers and snipers who had a history of repetitive exposure to low-level blast had more severe post-concussive symptoms but no poorer mental health outcomes compared to controls. This suggests that post-concussive symptoms and mental health outcomes might be dissociable when assessing the impact of repetitive low-level blast exposure in the context of training and operations.

Summary: The study found that veterans exhibited heightened responsiveness to background information and reduced ERP responses to task-relevant information. Impulsivity predicted modulation of the P3b across stimulus conditions. These results may indicate amplified internal states leading to neural noise and reduced ability to modulate relevant responses.

Summary: This scoping review provides a comprehensive overview of the literature on blast exposure, with a focus on low-level blast (LLB) exposure. The findings suggest that LLB exposure may have detrimental effects on the health of both animals and humans, but the results are mixed and more research is needed. Collaboration across disciplines, larger sample sizes, and standardization of terminology, exposures, and outcomes would benefit future research in this area.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death worldwide, leading to cellular physiological changes, neuronal cell death, altered molecular pathways, and decreased quality of life. The use of alternative animal models that better replicate human individuality, such as those with evolved brain protection, may provide preventive applications for humans. Studying these unconventional animals can increase knowledge, improve current animal models, and inspire translational applications in human brain injury research.
