Electrolyte additive enhances the electrochemical performance of Cu for rechargeable Cu//Zn batteries

Xinxin Song, Chenggang Wang, Dongdong Wang, Huili Peng, Cheng Wang, Chunsheng Wang, Weiliu Fan, Jian Yang, Yitai Qian

Summary: Cu-based cathodes in aqueous batteries have potential advantages but are hindered by serious side reactions caused by the spontaneous formation of Cu2O. In this study, Na2EDTA is introduced to reshape the solvation structure of Cu2+ and modify the electrode/electrolyte interface, reducing the redox potential of Cu2+/Cu2O and inhibiting Cu2O formation. The change in solvation structure also promotes high local concentration and uniform deposition. These findings provide insights for the application of rechargeable Cu-based batteries.

Molecular deciphering of hydrophobic, Zinc-philic and robust Amino-functionalized Polysilane for Dendrite-free Zn Anode

Jingjing Dong, Huili Peng, Jing Wang, Chenggang Wang, Dongdong Wang, Nana Wang, Weiliu Fan, Xuchuan Jiang, Jian Yang, Yitai Qian

Summary: In order to address the issues of severe electrolyte corrosion and dendrite growth in aqueous batteries, the electrolyte/Zn interface needs to be engineered. A new method of coating a dense and robust layer of polysilane functionalized by -NH2 on Zn has been developed. This layer provides alkalinity and interaction with Zn2+, enhancing hydrolysis and regulating Zn2+ flux. The results show superior mechanical property, suppressed side reactions, and uniform plating/stripping, leading to excellent electrochemical performance in both symmetrical and asymmetrical cells, even under high loading of MnO2 and limited electrolyte conditions.

Tuning the charge distribution and crystal field of iron single atoms via iron oxide integration for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction in zinc-air batteries

Feifei Zhang, Yinlong Zhu, Yijun Zhong, Jing Zou, Yu Chen, Lianhai Zu, Zhouyou Wang, Jack Jon Hinsch, Yun Wang, Lian Zhang, Zongping Shao, Huanting Wang

Summary: This study enhances the ORR performance of Fe-N-C catalyst by integrating Fe2O3, achieving excellent activity, durability, and good methanol tolerance. By using M-Fe2O3/FeSA@NC catalyst in a zinc-air battery assembly, a peak power density of 155 mW cm-2 and specific capacity of 762 mA h gZn-1 were achieved, with superior cycling stability over 200 h. The introduction of Fe2O3 alters the crystal field and electron distribution on single Fe atoms, breaking the symmetric charge distribution and optimizing the adsorption energy of intermediates for O2 reduction.

Yuan Li, Xinyao Wang, Hong Wang, Xiaoyao Tan, Dan Liu, Jianzhou Gui, Jian Gao, Zhen Yin, Na Ma, Yun Wang

Summary: Metal-air batteries rely on the slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for their operation. The high cost and limited availability of Pt-based catalysts required for ORR have led to the development of metal-free catalysts. This study utilized sugar, melamine, and a polymerizable ionic liquid to prepare heteroatom-doped carbons with desired composition and structure, which exhibited comparable performance to a commercial Pt/C catalyst in terms of onset potential, half-wave potential, and stability. The synthesized carbon catalyst was successfully applied in a Zn-air battery, achieving a high power density of 90 mW cm(-2).

Adsorption of Model Polyfluoroalkyl Substances on Gold Electrodes for Electroanalytical Applications

Xin Wang, Seokgyun Ham, Hongwei Zhang, Yun Wang, Rui Qiao

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption behavior of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a model PFAS molecule, on gold substrates using simulations. The results show that PFOA molecules can adsorb on neutral gold surfaces with the lowest free energy in a co-planar orientation, indicating strong enrichment of PFOA near the electrode. Van der Waals interactions between PFOA and gold are the primary driving force for adsorption, while entropic effects associated with interfacial water molecules are the secondary driving force. These findings have important implications for the electrochemical detection and analysis of PFAS molecules.

Summary: Polymer gels have been used in Enhanced Oil Recovery for many years, but there is a lack of methods for tracing and positioning them within the layers. Traditional tracers are affected by the differences in size, potential, and viscosity with polymer gels, resulting in variations between monitoring results and actual movement. By synthesizing fluorescent components with polymer gels, driving and tracking can be integrated, acting as a tracer while flooding. The stability of fluorescent CQDs@PPG has been tested under reservoir conditions, showing unaffected fluorescence peak value and promising performance in a specific reservoir condition.
