Samples of the diatom Nitzschia cf. frustulum, collected from Lake Yogo, Siga Prefecture, Japan, were cultured in the laboratory. Organic components of the diatom cell were removed by washing with acetone and sodium hypochlorite. The remaining frustules were studied by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the spindle-shaped diatom frustule was composed of hydrous amorphous silica. Pressure-induced phase transformation of the diatom frustule was investigated by in situ Raman spectroscopic analysis. With exposure to 0.3 GPa at 100 degrees C, the Raman band corresponding to quartz occurred at nu = 465 cm(-1). In addition, a characteristic Raman band for moganite was observed at 501 cm(-1). From the integral ratio of Raman bands, the moganite content in the probed area was estimated to be approximately 50 wt%. With increased pressure and temperature, the initial morphology of diatom frustules was totally changed to a characteristic spherical particle with a diameter of about 2 mu m. Increasing pressure to 5.7 GPa at 100 degrees C resulted in the appearance of a Raman band assignable to coesite at 538 cm(-1). That is, with compression and heating, hydrous amorphous silica can be readily crystallized into quartz, moganite, and coesite. First-principles calculations revealed that a disiloxane molecule with a trans configuration is twisted 60 degrees with a close approach of a water molecule, which leads to a trans to cis configuration change. It is therefore reasonable to assume that during crystallization of hydrous amorphous silica, an Si-O-Si bridging unit with the cis configuration would survive as a structural defect, and could subsequently crystallize into moganite by maintaining that geometry. This hypothesis is adaptable to the phase transformation from hydrous amorphous silica to coesite as well, because coesite has four-membered rings and is easily formed from hydrous amorphous silica under high pressure and temperature conditions.

Distinguishing reworked diatoms derived from Neogene marine strata in modern coastal assemblages for understanding taphonomic processes and reconstructing Holocene paleoenvironments in the Tokachi coastal area, Hokkaido, Japan

Takashi Chiba, Yuichi Nishimura, Yukio Yanagisawa

Summary: The study focused on the distribution of modern and Neogene diatom assemblages in the Toberi River area of eastern Hokkaido, Japan, and analyzed changes in fossil diatom assemblages during the late Holocene. The results suggest that when reconstructing Holocene paleoenvironments, allochthonous, extinct, and persistent extant taxa should be excluded from diatom assemblage analysis.

Temperature dependence of orientationally disordered SO4 tetrahedra in mirabilite (Na2SO4•10H2O)

Ryutaro Ikeda, Atsushi Kyono

Summary: Mirabilite, a representative phase change material, exhibits temperature-dependent structural behavior due to the expansion of Na(H2O)(6) octahedra and changes in SO4 tetrahedra. The shrinking of the major SO4 tetrahedron with increasing temperature leads to oxygen diffusion to the minor SO4 tetrahedron, impacting the occupancy of oxygen sites. The crystal structure of mirabilite consists of ribbons of Na(H2O)(6) octahedra and chains of SO4 tetrahedra, with a phase change to thenardite immediately occurring after dehydration.

Phase transition and melting in zircon by nanosecond shock loading

Sota Takagi, Kouhei Ichiyanagi, Atsushi Kyono, Nobuaki Kawai, Shunsuke Nozawa, Norimasa Ozaki, Yusuke Seto, Takuo Okuchi, Souma Nitta, Satoru Okada, Kohei Miyanishi, Keiichi Sueda, Tadashi Togashi, Toshinori Yabuuchi

Summary: In this study, the phase transition dynamics of shock-compressed zircon (ZrSiO4) were investigated using laser-driven shock compression coupled with in situ X-ray diffraction for the first time. The results showed that zircon can undergo a phase transition to the high-pressure reidite phase under nanosecond timescale laser-driven shocks. The diffraction peaks of zircon and reidite appeared superimposed on a diffuse background attributed to liquid scattering from partial melt. Upon release, the melt recrystallized into a combination of zircon and reidite, indicating the kinetically inhibited decomposition of zircon to SiO2 and ZrO2.

Influence of Bisphenol A and 17β-Trenbolone Exposure in Oryzias Congeners

Yoshifumi Horie, Takashi Chiba

Summary: Japanese medaka, as a model fish, shows different responses to endocrine-disrupting chemicals between the northern Oryzias sakaizumii and the southern O. latipes. Exposure to bisphenol A and 17 beta-trenbolone induced sex reversal in O. sakaizumii and had lower effects compared to O. latipes. These findings demonstrate the different responses of O. sakaizumii and O. latipes to androgenic and estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Seven Epithemia taxa (Bacillariophyta) from Lake Akan (Japan) and their salinity tolerances

Takashi Chiba, Yoshifumi Horie, Akihiro Tuji

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between diatom species and salinity by culturing seven benthic diatom species from Lake Akan in Japan. The results show that Epithemia adnata, E. frickei, E. gibba, and E. sorex grow in freshwater to brackish-water environments, while Epithemia operculata and E. sp. can adapt to hypersaline environments. E. turgida has the narrowest salinity tolerance range. These findings provide new insights into the ecology of these species in modern environments and paleoenvironmental reconstructions through diatom analysis.
