Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze pain intensity in patients with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) following a multimodal rehabilitation protocol. Methods: A prospective study was carried out following the Template for Intervention Description and Replication criteria. Patients were recruited from the rehabilitation unit of a university hospital in Spain between 2009 and 2013. Patients were included if they had a medical diagnosis of MPS in any of the following regions: cervicobrachial (n = 102), lumbosacral (n = 30), elbow (n = 14), ankle and foot (n = 10), and temporomandibular jaw (n = 1). The multimodal rehabilitation protocol included myofascial trigger point dry needling, spray and stretching, Kinesio taping, eccentric exercise, and patient education. The protocol was applied for 4 weeks (5 sessions) for the active and/or latent myofascial trigger points in each body region. Pain intensity was measured by using the visual analog scale (VAS) immediately before beginning of the study and 1 week after completion of the protocol. Results: The study sample comprised 150 patients (mean +/- standard deviation age, 51.5 +/- 1.19 years). Statistically significant differences were obtained for reduction in pain intensity (4 +/- 2.03; P = .002). Clinically relevant reductions (VAS = 30 mm; P < .001) were obtained in 78.7% of the interventions. Four treatment sessions reduced the VAS score by 10 mm in 83.55% of the sample. There were no statistically significant differences (P = .064) for reduction in pain intensity in the different body regions. Conclusions: A multimodal rehabilitation protocol showed clinically relevant differences in the reduction in pain intensity in different body regions in patients with MPS.

Influence of Footwear Features on Oxygen Consumption and Running Economy: A Review

Miguel Angel Melero-Lozano, Marta San-Antolin, Davinia Vicente-Campos, J. L. Chicharro, Ricardo Becerro-de-Bengoa-Vallejo, Marta Elena Losa-Iglesias, David Rodriguez-Sanz, Cesar Calvo-Lobo

Summary: The use of new technology in racing shoes has been shown to improve the performance of runners, especially in terms of oxygen consumption. However, there is still a lack of understanding about which specific features of the shoes can decrease oxygen consumption during running. This study aimed to determine the influence of footwear features, such as shoe mass, cushioning system, longitudinal bending stiffness, and comfort feeling, on running economy.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome in Women with Primary Dysmenorrhea: A Case-Control Study

Ana Serrano-Imedio, Cesar Calvo-Lobo, Coraima Casanas-Martin, Alejandro Garrido-Marin, Daniel Pecos-Martin

Summary: This study investigated the presence of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) and alterations in mechanosensitivity and pain patterns in patients with primary dysmenorrhea. It was found that there were significant differences in pain and quality of life between the groups, but no significant differences in work productivity and absenteeism. The frequency of active MTrPs was higher in women with primary dysmenorrhea, especially during the menstrual phase, and referred pain areas in the pelvic floor muscles increased.

Low Intensity Respiratory Muscle Training in COVID-19 Patients after Invasive Mechanical Ventilation: A Retrospective Case-Series Study

Koldo Villelabeitia-Jaureguizar, Cesar Calvo-Lobo, David Rodriguez-Sanz, Davinia Vicente-Campos, Jose Adrian Castro-Portal, Marta Lopez-Canadas, Ricardo Becerro-de-Bengoa-Vallejo, Jose Lopez Chicharro

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of low intensity respiratory muscle training (RMT) on COVID-19 patients after medical discharge and ICU stay with invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). The results showed that low intensity RMT improved respiratory muscle strength, health related quality of life, and dyspnea in COVID-19 patients. In particular, low intensity RMT could improve dyspnea level and possibly PImax in COVID-19 patients who received IMV in the ICU.

Summary: This study shows that dry needling therapy in the flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) muscle can improve postural control in patients with lumbar pain. The researchers measured stabilometric variables before and after deep dry needling and found significant changes in three variables: surface with eyes closed, medium speed of laterolateral displacement with eyes closed, and medium speed of anteroposterior displacement with eyes closed. Dry needling therapy in the FDB muscle reduces standing postural control with eyes closed.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the intra- and inter-session reliability and repeatability of the Manual Infrared Camera PCE-TC 30 thermography device in measuring the skin temperature of athletes' triceps surae muscle tissue. The results showed excellent reliability and repeatability of the procedure in the triceps surae muscle tissue of athletes. Future studies should consider using this procedure to promote prevention and recovery in athletes' triceps surae muscle.

Indoor air quality in a training centre used for sports practice

Victoria Mazoteras-Pardo, Marta Elena Losa-Iglesias, Israel Casado-Hernandez, Cesar Calvo-Lobo, Angel Morales-Ponce, Alfredo Medrano-Soriano, Sergio Coco-Villanueva, Ricardo Becerro-de-Bengoa-Vallejo

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the indoor air quality of a sports training center catering to small groups and rehabilitation. The results showed that CO2 and relative humidity levels were higher indoors than outdoors. Temperature was higher outside than inside and in the evening compared to the morning. TVOC, AQI, and PM showed minimal variation, though they were higher outdoors in the morning. CO levels were highest indoors. The study concluded that the indoor air quality of the training center was good and met current regulations, with some components even exhibiting better levels than fresh air.

Biosignals by In-Shoe Plantar Pressure Sensors on Different Hardness Mats during Running: A Cross-Over Study

Jaime Garcia-Arroyo, Soraya Pacheco-da-Costa, Francisco Molina-Rueda, Davinia Vicente-Campos, Cesar Calvo-Lobo, Isabel M. Alguacil-Diego

Summary: This study analyzed the maximum forces and peak plantar pressures on mats with different hardness during running. Running on soft polyurethane foam mats decreased the maximum forces and peak pressures in the whole plantar region and mainly in the anterior part of the foot plantar region. Air chamber mats increased the peak pressures in the calcaneus and first metatarsal head.

Immediate Effects of Whole-Body versus Local Dynamic Electrostimulation of the Abdominal Muscles in Healthy People Assessed by Ultrasound: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Lorena Alvarez-Barrio, Vicente Rodriguez-Perez, Cesar Calvo-Lobo, Raquel Leiros-Rodriguez, Eduardo Alba-Perez, Ana Felicitas Lopez-Rodriguez

Summary: The muscles of the abdominal wall play an important role in stabilizing the pelvis and spinal column. The combination of physical exercise with electrical currents, known as dynamic electrostimulation, can have positive effects on muscle mass and strength. This study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of dynamic electrostimulation on the abdominal musculature and physiological parameters. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the groups except for heart rate, where the electrostimulation group had a smaller increase compared to the control group.

Exercise Training and Interventions for Coronary Artery Disease

Hugo Fernandez-Rubio, Ricardo Becerro-de-Bengoa-Vallejo, David Rodriguez-Sanz, Cesar Calvo-Lobo, Davinia Vicente-Campos, Jose Lopez Chicharro

Summary: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major cause of mortality, with increasing prevalence.
