Background: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between weight loss and resistin, apelin, chemerin, and visfatin after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). Methods: The study group consisted of 19 patients who were operated on for morbid obesity (BMI: 48.7 +/- 6.6 kg/m(2)), and 22 healthy, normal-weight (BMI: 22.9 +/- 2.5 kg/m(2)) subjects formed the control group. We obtained blood samples from the study subjects at three different times: before undergoing surgery and at one month and 6 months after surgery. Blood was obtained once from the control group. Results: Significant weight loss was achieved at one and 6 months after surgery. Plasma levels of apelin, resistin, chemerin, and visfatin were higher in morbidly obese patients compared with the control group. Obesity-related peptides decreased one month and 6 months after surgery. Conclusions: Elevated plasma resistin, apelin, chemerin, and visfatin levels in morbidly obese patients are gradually reduced after weight loss. According to these findings, LAGB surgery is found to be an important and efficient means for morbidly obese patients both to lose weight and to develop a better metabolic risk profile in a short time period.

Is there a potential biomarker in distinguishing invasive breast carcinomas with elevated Ki-67 levels among 2D-SWE, SMI, and 18F-FDG PET-CT/MRI-derived parameters?: A single-center data

Seda Aladag Kurt, Lebriz Uslu Besli, Yasemin Kayadibi, Cesur Samanci, Azizullah Nazari, Tulin Ozturk, Pinar Kocael, Haluk Sayman

Summary: Quantitative imaging and metabolic parameters can be used to predict high proliferation in invasive breast carcinomas, but they are not eligible to be used as independent biomarkers. Visual assessment of microvascular morphology can improve prognostic efficiency.

Summary: The study found that AOPPs and PAB levels were significantly higher, while FRAP levels were significantly lower in low-risk and moderate-risk PE patients. In high-risk PE patients, AOPPs and IMA levels were significantly higher. There were significant correlations between AOPPs levels and IMA levels, as well as PAB levels.

The relationship between hematological indices as indicators of inflammation and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 status in newborns

Yusuf Elgormus, Omer Okuyan, Hafize Uzun

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and systemic inflammatory markers NLR, LMR, and PLR in newborns. The results suggest that vitamin D deficiency in newborns may be associated with inflammation and changes in NLR, LMR, and PLR. NLR and other hematologic indices may serve as non-invasive, simple, easily measurable, and cost-effective markers of inflammation in newborns.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between SII, NLR, and PLR with clinical findings of RSV infection in children with LRTI. The results showed that CRP levels were higher in RSV positive cases, while NLR, PLR, and SII were lower in these cases. CRP performed better than other blood parameters as a marker. Determining the cause of the disease using these parameters can aid in disease management and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of the RV vaccine on the natural course of RV infections. The results showed that children who received the RV vaccine had lower rates of fever and hospitalization for acute gastroenteritis (AGE), and breastfeeding was also associated with a lower risk of infection. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune inflammatory index (SII) were significantly higher in the RV-unvaccinated group.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between NF-kappa B, oxidative stress, and disease severity in new COVID-19 patients was investigated. LOX-1, NF-kappa B, and oxLDL levels were found to be higher in COVID-19 patients compared to healthy subjects. oxLDL showed the highest discrimination power in distinguishing COVID-19 patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between serum irisin levels and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The findings showed that STEMI patients had significantly lower irisin levels compared to control subjects, and these levels were correlated with cTi levels and QTc interval.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between plasma irisin, RBP-4, and adiponectin levels and the severity of OSAS. The results showed that these biomarkers were associated with the disease and could be used for diagnosis in the absence of polysomnography. Patients with an AHI score greater than thirty should be closely monitored for metabolic abnormalities.

Ranolazine exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in H9c2 cardiomyocytes

Z. Dogan, S. Durmus, D. D. Ergun, R. Gelisgen, H. Uzun

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of ranolazine on hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1 alpha) and oxidative stress in H9c2 cardiomyocyte cells. The results showed that ranolazine can protect cardiomyocytes from oxidative damage induced by methotrexate (MTX) by reducing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidant capacity markers. The antioxidant properties of ranolazine may contribute to these protective effects.

Evaluation of the relationship between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and thrombus burden in patients with deep vein thrombosis

Zeki Dogan, Gokhan Bektasoglu, Seyma Dumur, Hafize Uzun, Ismail Erden, Mustafa Yurtdas

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the monocyte count and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and their ratio in patients with deep venous thrombosis and investigate whether this ratio can indicate thrombus burden in terms of thrombus location. The results showed a significantly higher monocyte/high-density lipoprotein ratio in deep venous thrombosis patients compared to the control group. This ratio was associated with thrombus location and the number of vein segments involved.

The Epidemiology of Deficiency of Vitamin B12 in Preschool Children in Turkey

Yusuf Elgormus, Omer Okuyan, Seyma Dumur, Ugurcan Sayili, Hafize Uzun

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the vitamin B12 levels and risk factors in preschool children. The results showed that B12 deficiency was significantly higher in the 6-11-month group compared to other age groups. Children with insufficient B12 levels had higher homocysteine levels. There was no significant difference in weekly dairy and meat consumption levels among different age groups. The study concluded that low vitamin B12 levels and increased homocysteine levels could be important risk factors in preschool children, especially those starting to consume additional foods from the age of 6 months.
