The combined effects of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity and autonomic nervous system (ANS) arousal were examined on developmental trajectories of children's comorbid internalizing and externalizing problems. Participants were 394 urban dwelling, primarily African American, youth (50% male, age 11-12 years). Parent-reported child behavior problems were obtained initially, 3, 6, and 12 months later. Saliva samples (collected at the initial assessment) were assayed for cortisol (HPA) and alpha-amylase (ANS). Cross-domain latent class growth analysis identified a stable comorbid trajectory and four other distinct short-term developmental trajectories of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. ANS arousal was negatively associated with the probability of stable comorbidity, but only among youth who also had high levels of HPA axis activity. Findings underscore the predictive value of the interaction of HPA axis activity and ANS arousal in differentiating children with stable comorbidity and have important implications for etiological theories and treatment outcome research. The cognitive, affective and somatic empathy scales for adults

Adrian Raine, Frances R. Chen, Rebecca Waller

Summary: The study extended the CHILD instrument CASES to adults and found that individuals with higher psychopathy and stimulation-seeking scores were less impaired in their empathic reactions to positive events, suggesting they are relatively capable of responding emotionally to rewarding events. Somatic empathy was strongly associated with pleasure in affective touch and gender differences in empathy.

The association between cortisol-AA coordination in response to stress, negative urgency, and antisocial behavior in an urban adult sample

Frances R. Chen

Summary: Prior studies have shown that the interaction between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) affects behavior problems in youth. However, little is known about this relationship in adults and its connection to stress system coordination. This study aimed to expand on previous findings by examining the coordination between HPA and ANS, specifically cortisol and alpha-amylase (AA), and its association with antisocial behavior and negative urgency in adults. The results showed that cortisol-AA stress coordination was stronger in offenders compared to other groups, and that it was positively associated with antisocial behavior and negative urgency. These findings suggest that cortisol-AA stress coordination may indicate an exaggerated ANS response to high emotional distress, highlighting the importance of a multisystem approach in behavior research.

Individual differences in latent trait cortisol (LTC): Implications for the onset and course of future depressive symptoms

Catherine B. Stroud, Frances R. Chen, Rachel Y. Levin, Morgan M. Richman, Erin Lamberth, Leah D. Doane

Summary: Research suggests that indicators of HPA axis activity can predict depression, but few studies have examined the relationship between trait indicators of HPA axis activity and depression. This study used a trait indicator that captures HPA axis activity over multiple time points to investigate the links between trait cortisol and psychopathology. The results showed that trait cortisol can predict the onset and duration of depressive symptoms, but the association with new onsets was not significant after adjusting for past symptoms.

The role of arousal and stress physiological responses in the pathway from strains to violent and non-violent antisocial behavior

Frances R. Chen, Montana K. Nowak

Summary: This study fills a knowledge gap by examining the role of physiological arousal and stress response in the association between strains and antisocial behavior. The findings suggest that the interaction between strains and resting heart rate predicts violent antisocial behavior, while the interaction between strains and stress reactivity predicts non-violent antisocial behavior.

PEP reward reactivity moderates the effects of RSA reactivity on antisocial behavior and substance use

Frances R. Chen, Katherine French

Summary: This study examined the relationship between pre-ejection period (PEP) reward reactivity, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reactivity, antisocial behavior (ASB), and substance use. The results showed that greater RSA withdrawal to stress and less PEP shortening to reward predicted higher levels of ASB and substance use.

Stress Coping Strategies as Mediators: Toward a Better Understanding of Sexual, Substance, and Delinquent Behavior-Related Risk-Taking among Transition-Aged Youth

Jacinda K. Dariotis, Frances R. Chen

Summary: Transitional aged youth (18-24) report increasing and peaking risk-taking behaviors, which are associated with stressful life events. This study examines the mediating role of coping strategies in the relationship between stress and risky behaviors.

Reduced Electrodermal Fear Conditioning and Child Callous-Unemotional Traits

Frances R. Chen, Adrian Raine, Yu Gao

Summary: This study found an association between CU traits in children and reduced electrodermal fear conditioning, highlighting the importance of conditioned negative emotional arousability in CU traits and supporting the developmental psychopathology hypothesis that CU traits may result from impaired conscience development. The findings suggest that electrodermal fear conditioning has the potential to be incorporated into treatment protocols for screening and evaluation purposes.
