Summary: Traumatic injury is associated with changes in stress response systems and psychological health. This study examined the reactivity of salivary analytes (cortisol and sAA) during a stress procedure and its relation to psychological health outcomes. The results showed that higher sAA reactivity was associated with greater emotion dysregulation after traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the relation of sAA reactivity with internalizing and generalized anxiety scores was not as strong in both TBI and extracranial injury (EI) groups. The findings suggest that autonomic nervous system dysregulation may contribute to poorer adjustment after TBI.

Summary: The study found that among children with higher levels of irritability at age 3, a steeper diurnal cortisol slope at age 9 predicted greater internalizing symptoms and irritability at age 12, whereas a blunted slope at age 9 predicted greater externalizing symptoms at age 12. The results suggest that variation in stress system functioning can predict different developmental trajectories of early irritability, either internalizing or externalizing symptoms dominate in pre-adolescence.

Summary: The study suggests that the link between increased salivary cortisol and social withdrawal in depression may be mediated by social withdrawal. Basal and diurnal salivary alpha-amylase were found to be unrelated to social withdrawal and depression, but HPA-axis activation may exacerbate social withdrawal in depressive disorders.

Summary: The study found a positive correlation between diurnal salivary cortisol and hair cortisol concentration in children. Additionally, an increase in effortful control scores was associated with a higher likelihood of having high hair cortisol levels, although this association slightly weakened after adjustments. No clear associations were found between temperament dimensions and stress-related biomarkers.

Summary: This study identifies three distinct patterns of sleep problems among adolescents and explores their association with internalizing and externalizing problems. The findings demonstrate the importance of identifying these patterns to effectively target interventions and promote emotional and behavioral health in adolescents.

Summary: This study identified three profiles of joint cortisol-DHEA responsivity in adolescents, finding that hyperresponsive adolescents experienced more emotional and behavioral problems over time. Distraction coping was found to be effective in reducing emotional and behavioral difficulties for the normative group, but had the opposite effect for the hyporesponsive group.

Summary: This study reports a POCT system for quantitation of salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) with clinically acceptable accuracy in any setting. Preliminary clinical studies using this system reveal the great potential of sAA as an early warning indicator of abnormal glucose metabolism.

Summary: This study found that childhood externalizing problems and comorbid problems were associated with suicide attempts, while internalizing problems were not associated with suicidal ideation. This suggests that these problems confer a specific risk for suicide attempts.

Summary: This study identified longitudinal trajectories of psychopathology in previously institutionalized youth and examined biobehavioral emotion regulation processes as developmental mechanisms that predict these trajectories. Four externalizing trajectories were identified for both previously institutionalized and nonadopted youth, with unique aspects of emotion regulation being differentially associated with membership in these groups. Three internalizing trajectories were also identified, with parent-reported global emotion regulation being a predictive factor for both groups. These findings highlight the importance of biobehavioral emotion regulation processes in predicting and intervening in trajectories of externalizing behaviors in previously institutionalized children.

The variation characteristics of male and female under resting state and acid stimulation are basically the same, with the trend of salivary alpha-amylase activity being opposite to that of cortisol.

Summary: The study found that persistent postpartum depression is associated with children's internalizing problems, but the impact is not long-lasting as there was no association at 8-9 years old. There were no clear associations found between postpartum depression severity and children's internalizing and externalizing problems.

Summary: In patients with stress-related major depression, a subgroup of non-responders exhibits altered functioning of stress-responsive bodily systems. These non-responders have higher post-awakening alpha-amylase activity and this activity increases significantly over the course of treatment, while post-awakening cortisol is not a predictor or indicator of treatment response. Future research may confirm alpha-amylase activity as a modulator of treatment response, which could benefit this subgroup of patients.

Summary: The study extended the CHILD instrument CASES to adults and found that individuals with higher psychopathy and stimulation-seeking scores were less impaired in their empathic reactions to positive events, suggesting they are relatively capable of responding emotionally to rewarding events. Somatic empathy was strongly associated with pleasure in affective touch and gender differences in empathy.

Summary: Prior studies have shown that the interaction between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) affects behavior problems in youth. However, little is known about this relationship in adults and its connection to stress system coordination. This study aimed to expand on previous findings by examining the coordination between HPA and ANS, specifically cortisol and alpha-amylase (AA), and its association with antisocial behavior and negative urgency in adults. The results showed that cortisol-AA stress coordination was stronger in offenders compared to other groups, and that it was positively associated with antisocial behavior and negative urgency. These findings suggest that cortisol-AA stress coordination may indicate an exaggerated ANS response to high emotional distress, highlighting the importance of a multisystem approach in behavior research.

Summary: Research suggests that indicators of HPA axis activity can predict depression, but few studies have examined the relationship between trait indicators of HPA axis activity and depression. This study used a trait indicator that captures HPA axis activity over multiple time points to investigate the links between trait cortisol and psychopathology. The results showed that trait cortisol can predict the onset and duration of depressive symptoms, but the association with new onsets was not significant after adjusting for past symptoms.

Summary: This study found an association between CU traits in children and reduced electrodermal fear conditioning, highlighting the importance of conditioned negative emotional arousability in CU traits and supporting the developmental psychopathology hypothesis that CU traits may result from impaired conscience development. The findings suggest that electrodermal fear conditioning has the potential to be incorporated into treatment protocols for screening and evaluation purposes.
