Summary: This study found that serum Sema4D levels have predictive value for the occurrence and diagnosis of MRONJ in BPs users. The mode of treatment for MRONJ (oral or intravenous BPs) affects the extent of decrease in Sema4D levels.

Summary: Invasive dental treatment in patients taking antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs may lead to medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). However, the exact pathogenesis of this disease is still unclear. This study reviewed in vitro studies and found that these drugs have cytotoxic effects on oral cells.

Summary: This systematic review investigated antibiotic choices and regimens for managing acute dentoalveolar infections. Narrow-spectrum agents appeared to be as effective in healthy individuals, suggesting broad-spectrum antibiotics as first-line empirical therapy may be unnecessary. The primary factor in successful management of dentoalveolar abscesses was addressing the source of infection.

Summary: This study conducted exploratory analyses on the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) after thyroid surgery and investigated the incidence of SSIs in patients with different risk indices. Additionally, by identifying the causative bacteria, appropriate methods for prophylactic antibiotic administration were determined.

Summary: Antibiotic stewardship is crucial in veterinary medicine to prevent resistant bacterial infections. A study on surgical site infections in dogs undergoing oromaxillofacial oncologic surgery found that anesthesia lasting over 6 hours significantly contributed to infection development. Further research may be needed to determine the optimal use of antibiotics in these procedures.

Summary: This study aimed to establish new criteria for high-risk pT1 CRC patients to skip completion surgery. Analysis of short- and long-term outcomes showed that lymphovascular invasion was a potential independent risk factor for lymph node metastasis (LNM), and rectal cancer and undifferentiated histology were independent risk factors for poor relapse-free survival in high-risk pT1 CRC patients.

Summary: The study aims to investigate whether prescribing empiric oral antibiotics for nonpurulent wound drainage is beneficial for preventing chronic infection or reoperation. The study design is a retrospective chart review, with patients calling the office with postsurgical wound concerns as the patient sample.

Summary: This study evaluates the safety of early oral ambulatory treatment for adult patients diagnosed with bacteremia after discharge from the emergency department. A cohort of 206 febrile ambulatory patients was assessed. Bacteremic low-risk patients were recommended oral treatment and were compared with matched febrile non-bacteremic outpatients. Rates of 14-day mortality and unplanned re-consultations were similar and below 5% in both cohorts, highlighting the safety of oral therapy for low-risk bacteremia, even from its onset.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in early esophageal cancer after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) by analyzing the association between submucosal fibrosis and ESD. The results showed that although ESD can be reliably performed without adverse events in early esophageal cancer, it is more difficult for lesions with strong submucosal fibrosis, leading to longer procedure time.

Summary: This study aimed to establish performance benchmarks for surgical site infection (SSI) in pediatric surgery and develop a prioritization framework for SSI prevention based on procedure-level burden. The analysis of data from 90 hospitals participating in NSQIP-Pediatric and procedural volume data from the PHIS database revealed that a small number of procedures account for a disproportionate burden of SSIs in pediatric surgery. The findings can be used to prioritize SSI prevention efforts.

Summary: Bacterial infections are common in cirrhotic patients with acute decompensation or acute-on-chronic liver failure, while fungal infections are less common but associated with high short-term mortality. Early diagnosis and appropriate empirical treatment are crucial in managing these patients. Combatting antibiotic resistance and adopting more complex treatment strategies are essential in the current management of cirrhotic patients.
