The purpose of this study is to identify the top 100-cited articles dedicated to epilepsy and status epilepticus published in journals from January, 1950 through February, 2016 that have made key contributions in the field. We performed a search of journals and selected the top 100-cited articles on epilepsy and status epilepticus, respectively, by utilizing the Institute for Scientific Information database available under the banner of the Web of Science. The top-cited articles on epilepsy and status epilepticus were all published in 24 journals, respectively. In both fields of epilepsy and status epilepticus, the most frequently cited journal was Epilepsia (26 articles on epilepsy and 19 articles on status epilepticus). The 100 most-cited articles in the field of both epilepsy and status epilepticus mainly originated from institutions in the United States of America. The articles on epilepsy included 25 laboratory studies, 15 pharmacotherapy studies, 13 general review studies, 12 surgery studies, 11 neuroimaging studies, eight epidemiology studies, eight neuropsychiatry studies, six genetic studies, and two electrophysiology studies, whereas 41 laboratory studies, 21 epidemiology studies, 16 pharmacotherapy studies, nine electrophysiology studies, nine general review studies, and four neuroimaging studies were included in the field of status epilepticus. We demonstrate that neuroimaging, genetics, and surgery are emerging topics in the field of epilepsy over the past decades. Moreover, we found that the majority of top-cited articles on epilepsy and status epilepticus originated from institutions in the United States of America and most were published in Epilepsia. Finger drop sign as a new variant of acute motor axonal neuropathy

Byeol-A Yoon, Dong-Ho Ha, Hwan Tae Park, Susumu Kusunoki, Motoi Kuwahara, Jong Hwa Lee, Jong Seok Bae, Jong Kuk Kim

Summary: The finger drop sign is proposed as a new clinical variant of acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) based on immunological and radiological evidence. This unique syndrome is characterized by sustained weakness of the finger extensors and a distinctive pattern of abnormal signals mainly in muscles innervated by the posterior interosseous nerve on limb MRI. Testing showed positivity for immunoglobulin G antibody against ganglioside complex of GM1 and phosphatidic acid in all patients. Understanding the pathophysiology of this syndrome may provide insights into antiganglioside-antibody-mediated axonal injury in Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Personalized Consideration of Admission-Glucose Gap between Estimated Average and Initial Glucose Levels on Short-Term Stroke Outcome

Summary: The discrepancy between admission glucose level and estimated average glucose level based on HbA1c was found to be associated with poor short-term functional outcomes in ischemic stroke patients. It is important to consider glycemic control status at the time of stroke onset in addition to admission glucose levels when predicting short-term stroke outcomes.

Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome Associated with Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System

Sangwon Choi, Ju-Young Lee, Jong Seok Bae, Hong-Ki Song, Ju-Hun Lee, Yerim Kim

Summary: RCVS is a rare disease characterized by reversible multifocal stenosis of cerebral arteries, with unclear pathomechanisms. This reported case linked RCVS to the levonorgestrel-releasing IUS, causing thunderclap headache and multiple arterial stenosis. The potential role of levonorgestrel in vasoconstriction and endothelin-1 elevation may shed light on the mechanisms of RCVS.

Miller Fisher syndrome following COVID-19 vaccines: A scoping review

Jee-Eun Kim, Byeol-A Yoon, Yoo Hwan Kim, Jong Kuk Kim, Jong Seok Bae

Summary: This study aimed to identify and characterize Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) following COVID-19 vaccination. The findings suggest that MFS following COVID-19 vaccination has different pathophysiology compared to MFS following COVID-19 infection and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) following COVID-19 vaccination. Considering the rare incidence and diagnostic challenges of this neurological syndrome, it should be recognized as an adverse event of COVID-19 vaccination.

Summary: Bilateral facial weakness with distal paresthesia (BFWdp) may be a variant of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) following COVID-19 vaccination. This study found that BFWdp cases had similar characteristics to previous cases, but also showed additional features such as facial nerve enhancement on brain MRI and antiganglioside antibody positivity.

Chronic Hypoxemia Triggers a Neuropathic Process in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Insight From In Vivo Neurophysiological Assessments

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the initial trigger of peripheral neuropathies (PNs) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The automated nerve excitability test (NET) was conducted on 20 COPD patients, and it was found that COPD patients exhibited abnormal nerve excitability, characterized by smaller threshold changes in the mid-depolarizing phase and a prominent superexcitability in the recovery cycle. There were no significant differences in sensory nerve excitability between COPD patients and control groups.

Pre-treatment re-bleeding following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: A systematic review of published prediction models with risk of bias and clinical applicability assessment

Arosha S. Dissanayake, Kwok M. Ho, Timothy J. Phillips, Stephen Honeybul, Graeme J. Hankey

Summary: This study systematically reviews models that aim to provide patient-specific predictions of pre-treatment rebleeding risk in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The reported discriminative performance of the models varied, and no model showed consistently low bias risk and clinical applicability in all domains. Only one model was formulated using a patient cohort that underwent contemporary, evidence-based aneurysm treatment practices, but this model lacked calibration or clinical utility.
