Summary: The relationship between microstructure and mechanical property of three Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) was investigated. The results show that the content of CuZr2-type phase increases but that of Zr6Al2Ni-type phase decreases with increasing Zr content. The plastic flow stress and strain decrease while the plasticity increases with increasing fraction of CuZr2-type cluster, which is named as geometrically unfavorable motifs (GUMs). The fitting parameters from cumulative probability statistics provide valuable clues for investigating the plastic flow and plasticity of the BMGs.

Summary: A family of novel Os-Co-Ta-B high-temperature bulk metallic glasses (HTBMGs) with high glass transition temperature, Vickers microhardness, and compressive strength was fabricated by introducing high-modulus refractory metal Os and strong-covalent metalloid B. The impressive strength is attributed to the strong bond characteristics especially for Ta-Os and B-B bonds. The castable OsCo-based HTBMGs with superior mechanical properties and high thermal stabilities are significant for high-temperature applications as advanced structural materials.

Summary: This study explores the polarized plastic response of metallic glasses induced by asymmetric mechanical cycling. The results show that the amplitude of mechanical cycling can control the anelastic limit, and the plastic rearrangements exhaust while the anelastic rearrangements govern the anisotropy. The polarized plastic response is originated from the asymmetry of the local potential energy surface.

Summary: The effect of Ti substitution for Cu on the glass forming ability (GFA) and mechanical properties of Zr60Cu(20x)Al10Ni10Tix (x = 0, 1, 3 and 5at.%) bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) was investigated. The addition of Ti improved the GFA of Zr-based BMGs, as indicated by the increase in supercooled liquid region range from 47 K to 79 K. The plasticity and fracture strength of Zr-based BMGs significantly increased with Ti addition, reaching a peak value of 25.3% and 2315 MPa, respectively. The hardness and elastic modulus of Zr-based BMGs were also significantly improved with Ti addition.

Summary: This study reports that microalloying can improve the plasticity of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) at room temperature. The selection of minor elements Nb and Ta has a positive heat of mixing with the based compositions. The self-organize to a critical state (SOC) occurs in all BMGs, with a constant scaling exponent beta value. The variation of the rotation angle of primary shear bands (SBs) is consistent with plasticity. Meanwhile, the yield strength is linearly dependent on the local fracture toughness of BMGs.

Summary: In this study, CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys with a surface gradient nanostructure were produced using industrial shot blasting, which significantly improved their mechanical properties. The severely plastically deformed surface layer had a multi-scale hierarchical structure and increased in depth with shot-blasting time. The microhardness and tensile strength of the alloy were significantly higher after shot-blasting. The improved strain hardening and prevention of early necking in the gradient-nanostructured surface layer contributed to its high toughness.

Summary: Tribo-electrochemical behavior of two beta-type (100-x)(Ti-45Nb)-xGa (x = 4, 8 wt%) alloys in physiological solution was investigated. Microstructure and mechanical behavior were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, microhardness and ultrasonic method. Tribocorrosion tests showed degradation mechanisms of plastic deformation, delamination, abrasive and adhesive wear. An improved wear resistance with lower damage was observed for beta-92(Ti-45Nb)-8Ga alloy due to increased microhardness. The addition of Ga to Ti-45Nb improved corrosion resistance under mechanical loading.

Summary: The shock-induced dynamic mechanical behavior and spallation failure of Ni-based single crystal superalloys are studied using non-equilibrium molecular dynamic simulations. Two modes of classical spallation and micro-spallation are observed during the spallation failure. The deformation mechanism is dominated by slip and drag of dislocations at low shock velocities, while complex phase transitions from FCC to BCC or disordered structures occur at higher velocities, leading to a decrease in spallation strength. The presence of voids significantly lowers the spallation strength, and the reduction in strength is proportional to the radius of the voids.

Summary: Selective laser melting (SLM) was utilized to produce CuZrAl metallic glass (MG) scaffolds with combined lattice structures of body-centered cubic and face-centered cubic (F2BCC), and the effects of lattice structures on mechanical behavior were investigated. The results revealed that curved struts remarkably enhanced compressive ductility by 122% and energy absorption by 106%. The presence of curved struts effectively prevented catastrophic shear fracture and delayed fracture occurrence due to the release of strain concentrations. This study demonstrates the potential of improving the ductility and toughness of SLM MG components through appropriate lattice structure design.

Summary: Zero-dimensional organic-inorganic metal halides (OMHs) are gaining attention in the fabrication of light-emitting diodes due to their broad emission band and high photoluminescence quantum yield. This work synthesized a zero-dimensional organic tetraphenylphosphonium bismuth chloride (TBC) that showed efficient blue light emission, with the emission mechanism attributed to the transition of Bi3+ ions. White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated using TBC, along with green-emitting and red-emitting single crystals, achieving single-component white emissions. Summary: The revolutionary design concept of high-entropy alloys has brought new opportunities and challenges to the development of advanced metal materials. In this work, AlCrCuFe2NiTix high-entropy flux cored wires were prepared by combining the design idea of a high-entropy alloy with the characteristics of flux cored wire. AlCr-CuFe2NiTix high-entropy surfacing alloys were prepared using gas metal arc welding technology. The wear properties of the alloys were analyzed, and the phase composition, microstructure, strengthening mechanism, and wear mechanism were discussed. The results show that the alloys exhibit a dendritic microstructure with BCC/B2 + FCC phases. Increasing Ti content leads to the precipitation of Laves phase. The alloys show improved microhardness and wear resistance due to the precipitation of coherent B2 and Laves phases. However, excessive Ti addition results in the increase of Laves phase and reduced wear resistance of the alloys.
