The purpose of this pictorial review is to present an overview of the radioclinical features of osteomyelitis. The presentation of the disease may vary depending on the clinical stage (acute, subacute and chronic), the pathogenesis of the infection and the age of the patient. Thorough knowledge of the basic pathophysiological mechanisms is a prerequisite to understanding the variable imaging appearance of osteomyelitis. Special subtypes of osteomyelitis including CRMO and SAPHO will be discussed very shortly.

Summary: Image-guided musculoskeletal interventional procedures around the hip are widely used in clinical practice, but there is still low evidence in the existing literature on some of these procedures. Further large prospective randomized trials are needed to confirm the benefits and clarify the role of imaging in guiding these procedures.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the evidence for image-guided musculoskeletal interventional procedures around the foot and ankle and derive a set of clinical indications through expert consensus. The results suggest that image-guided interventions should not be considered a first-line approach for treating Achilles tendinopathy, while using ultrasonography guidance significantly improves the efficacy of interventions for plantar fasciitis and Morton's neuroma.

Summary: Interventional procedures around the knee are widely adopted for treating musculoskeletal conditions. The Ultrasound and Interventional Subcommittees of the ESSR reviewed existing literature and highlighted controversies surrounding imaging guidance and medications efficacy. Ultrasonography guidance is recommended for precision in procedures, with further studies needed for better understanding of imaging guidance and medications efficacy.

Summary: This study conducted a Delphi-based consensus on image-guided interventional procedures for peripheral nerves of the lower limb, concluding that while some treatments received strong consensus, there is still a lack of evidence on the efficacy of most procedures.

Radiographs and MRI of the Cervical Spine in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: A Cross-Sectional Retrospective Study

Mateusz Kotecki, Piotr Gietka, Magdalena Posadzy, Iwona Sudol-Szopinska

Summary: This study evaluated the frequency of cervical spine lesions in 34 children with JIA, finding that 35% of patients were affected. X-ray was found to be superior in diagnosing AAS and SAS despite the advantages of MRI in imaging the atlanto-axial region.

Ankle Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Versus Non-Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Patients with Arthralgia

Monika Ostrowska, Emil Michalski, Piotr Gietka, Malgorzata Manczak, Magdalena Posadzy, Iwona Sudol-Szopinska

Summary: This study compared MRI findings between patients clinically suspected of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and patients with ankle arthralgia of unknown cause. The results showed that inflammatory features were observed on MRI, with tenosynovitis being significantly more common in JIA patients. However, the MRI summarized score did not effectively differentiate between JIA and non-JIA patients.

Foot and Ankle Conventional Radiography in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Does It Still Matter?

Magdalena Posadzy, Anna Sowinska, Filip Vanhoenacker, Piotr Gietka, Ewa Zelnio, Iwona Sudol-Szopinska

Summary: Conventional radiography plays an important role in evaluating the residual value in children with arthralgia. Soft tissue swelling, osteoporosis, and joint space narrowing are more common in patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) compared to those without inflammatory connective tissue disease.
