Summary: This study aimed to investigate the possible relations between serum concentrations of IL-6 and TGF-beta 1 and adverse effects of radiotherapy in prostate cancer patients. The results showed significant positive associations between diabetes mellitus and changes in acute genitourinary toxicity grades, as well as between smoking and maximum fatigue levels. Furthermore, there were positive correlations between IL-6 and TGF-beta 1 concentrations and genitourinary toxicity grades and fatigue levels.

Summary: The study demonstrated that RS4651 alleviates BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice by inhibiting the TGF-beta 1/SMAD signaling pathway. RS4651 administration decreased collagen deposition and alpha-SMA levels in the lungs of mice, while inhibiting proliferation and migration of MRC-5 cells, as well as alpha-SMA and pSMAD2 expression. RNA-sequencing data identified SMAD7 as the target gene, and further experiments showed that RS4651 upregulates SMAD7 expression to inhibit fibrosis progression.

Summary: By comparing post-mortem lung samples from patients who died of severe COVID-19 and H1N1pdm09 infection, it was found that the H1N1 group showed an increase in tissue expression of IL-8/IL-17A and a higher number of neutrophils. There was no significant difference in the distribution of genotype frequencies in the IL17A gene between the two groups. However, in SNP rs3819025 (G/A), the G allele may be considered a risk allele in patients who died from COVID-19.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of ionizing radiation on the brain of Rhesus macaques, revealing a relationship between apoE levels and brain volume in regions like the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. ApoE levels in the amygdala strongly predicted relative hippocampal volume. Radiation dose negatively impacted relative hippocampal volume, but when controlling for apoE levels in the amygdala, a protective compensatory role was observed.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the difference in circulating TGF-beta 1 levels between women with preeclampsia and normal pregnancies. The results showed that there was no difference in circulating TGF-beta 1 levels before the time of active disease, but women with preeclampsia had higher levels during the active disease compared to normotensive controls. This was true for both early-onset/severe and late-onset/mild types of preeclampsia.

Summary: The study suggests that high plasma VTN levels before radiation therapy may be associated with a higher risk of radiation pneumonitis, and specific genotypes of VTN could also affect the incidence of RP. Combining mean lung dose and VTN plasma level enables effective stratification of lung cancer patients receiving radiation therapy into different risk groups.

Summary: In this study, we discovered that inhibiting HSPB5 with NCI-41356 could limit pulmonary fibrosis by reducing the accumulation of collagen and pro-fibrotic markers. This effect is likely mediated through the inhibition of HSPB5/SMAD4 interaction and modulation of SMAD4 and TGF-beta 1 signaling. Further investigations are needed to determine the translatability of these results to humans.

Summary: This study evaluated whether reirradiation (re-RT) and concurrent bevacizumab (BEV) improve overall survival (OS) and/or progression-free survival (PFS) compared to BEV alone in recurrent glioblastoma (GBM). Summary: Ionizing radiation acoustic imaging (iRAI) enables real-time monitoring and adaptive feedback for cancer treatments by visualizing the interaction between radiation and tissues. A volumetric imaging system using a 2D matrix array transducer and a multi-channel preamplifier board was developed to map the 3D radiation dose distribution in complex clinical radiotherapy. The feasibility of temporal 3D dose accumulation and semiquantitative iRAI dose measurements were validated in tissue-mimicking phantom and in vivo rabbit model, respectively. Real-time visualization of 3D radiation dose delivered to a patient with liver metastases was achieved using a clinical linear accelerator, demonstrating the potential of iRAI in improving radiotherapy treatment efficacy.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of improving the prognosis stratification of the N staging system for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) by using quantitative spatial characterizations of metastatic lymph node (LN). Independent anatomical prognostic factors were identified and combined with the N stage, leading to superior risk stratification performance. Summary: This study developed an artificial intelligence-based decision-making framework to assist in dynamic treatment regimes (DTR) for oncology. The framework utilizes advanced machine learning analytics and information-rich multi-omics data to overcome the challenges posed by various variables, treatment response uncertainty, and patient heterogeneity. The framework, demonstrated in Knowledge Based Response-Adaptive Radiotherapy (KBR-ART) applications, consists of two main components and has shown promising results in improving clinical decision-making and treatment outcomes.
