This research investigates the application of Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) practices by enterprises in Brazil, Europe, and the USA. QRM is a management concept that focuses on time as the key factor in competitive manufacturing, particularly in customer-oriented Engineer and Make to Order (ETO/MTO) production environments. A literature review identifies QRM principles, divided into four core concepts. Next, an exploratory survey in 20 manufacturing companies that operate under ETO/MTO conditions and are known to have already implemented QRM shows that: (i) the degree of the application of QRM practices is not the same for the four core concepts of QRM; (ii) the extent of the implementation of each core concept is similar among all the world regions studied; (iii) the use of Lean Manufacturing favours the adoption of QRM; and (iv) the QRM practices least applied by the surveyed organizations are those related to the abandonment of a mentality based on economies of scale and cost reduction.

Lean production, information and communication technologies and operational performance

Giuliano Marodin, Charbel Jose Chiappetta Jabbour, Moacir Godinho Filho, Guilherme Luz Tortorella

Summary: The present research aims to understand the impact of the association between lean production and information and communication technologies (ICTs) on operational performance. The survey findings reveal contradictory results, suggesting that internal-oriented ICTs positively moderate the effect of lean on operational performance, while external-oriented ICTs negatively moderate the effect of lean on operational performance. These results emphasize the importance of understanding the systemic relationships between lean and ICTs.

Academic staff on their engagement with curriculum internationalisation: an organisational change perspective

Franka van den Hende, Jan Riezebos

Summary: Studies on curriculum internationalisation in higher education have found that low engagement of academic staff hampers its implementation. However, these studies fail to consider the organizational context in which academics operate. This research applies an organizational change perspective to investigate how the context affects engagement and implementation, as well as what aspects need to be changed. Through a comparative case study of four disciplinary contexts in a West-European university from 2012 to 2020, the perceptions and experiences of twenty-nine academic staff members were explored through in-depth interviews. It was found that various contextual tensions and inadequate resource management complicate the engagement with curriculum internationalisation. Nonetheless, evidence of achievements and strong individual drivers was also revealed. The findings highlighted how disciplinary contextual influences and dynamics shape specific perceptions and experiences of curriculum internationalisation in each study programme. This article presents a comprehensive framework of organizational change to explain and facilitate academic staff engagement with curriculum internationalisation in disciplinary communities.

Examining the impact of market power discrepancy between supply chain partners on firm financial performance

Jing Gu, Xinyu Shi, Junyao Wang, Xun Xu

Summary: The asymmetric market power between a firm and its partners negatively affects the firm's financial performance. Building relationships with suppliers or customers that have matched market power is the best approach. The strength of the buyer-supplier relationship amplifies the negative impact of asymmetric market power, while the level of relationship embeddedness reduces its negative effect. Moreover, firm-specific institutional, industry, and regional economic heterogeneities also influence the financial impact of asymmetric market power.

Learning efficient in-store picking strategies to reduce customer encounters in omnichannel retail

Fabio Neves-Moreira, Pedro Amorim

Summary: Omnichannel retailers are using stores as distribution centers to provide faster online order fulfillment services. However, in-store picking operations can impact the offline customer experience.
