Summary: A pharmaceutical vehicle based on lyophilized liposomes was developed for the buccal administration of drugs aimed at systemic delivery through the sublingual mucosa. The optimized formulation of lyophilized liposomes in unidirectional round tablets showed palatability, small size, comfortability, and buccal retention suitable for sublingual administration. The liposome release rate was slower compared to the permeation efficiency determined using a biomimetic membrane. The proposed liposomal formulation is suitable for systemic drug delivery through the sublingual mucosa.

Summary: Vaccine technology has continuously evolved, and mucosal vaccination, such as oral administration, has gained scientific interest. The oral mucosa provides a promising route for antigen delivery, promoting an effective immune response. Mucoadhesive biomaterial-based delivery systems, including nanoparticles, films, liposomes, microneedles, and gels, have shown controlled release and enhanced immunological responses. These systems are stable, easy to produce, and can be used for mass vaccination during outbreaks.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing scientific interest in topical ocular delivery targeting the posterior segment of the eye, as it is a non-invasive and well-tolerated administration route with fewer side effects. Improving corneal permeability or prolonging precorneal retention time can enhance intraocular bioavailability of drugs. Nanosystems utilizing mucoadhesive polymers or colloidal particles have emerged as promising strategies for more efficient treatment of ocular diseases.

Summary: The study aimed to determine whether the RODI questionnaire could distinguish between different causes of oral dryness in dry-mouth patients and whether it could be used as an additional diagnostic tool. Data from 528 patients showed that perceived intra-oral dryness varied among different dry-mouth patient groups. Controls and patients using limited medication had lower RODI scores and experienced less intra-oral dryness, while Sjogren patients had the highest RODI scores.

Summary: Oral disease is a common condition that has negative impacts on general health and quality of life. Designing therapeutic agents for oral diseases is challenging due to unique features of the oral cavity. In this study, the development of mucoadhesive functional hydrogels for oral applications is reported, using bio-inspired phenolic moieties in a pectin polymer. The results show that these mucoadhesive hydrogels have great potential for treating oral diseases, such as dry mouth and oral ulcers, by promoting tissue repair and providing prolonged drug release.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics of different degrees of intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury using permittivity data and proposed a method for assessing intestinal viability based on dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The results showed that dielectric parameters can be used to distinguish healthy, ischemic, and reperfused intestinal segments. Additionally, machine learning models were used to classify intestinal tissue based on its frequency dependent dielectric properties, providing a fast and accurate method for intraoperative decision-making.

Summary: This study used a porcine model to investigate the feasibility of using VIS-NIR spectroscopy to differentiate between degrees of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the small intestine. Two models were built and showed promising results in differentiating between control, ischemic, and reperfused intestinal segments, as well as viable versus non-viable segments. This method, combined with a PLS-DA model, appears to be a potentially real-time intraoperative method for assessing intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Summary: This paper establishes a physics-based simulation framework for steering a magnetically actuated guidewire based on the linear elasticity and dipoles theories. The framework employs a simplified integration scheme based on the finite-volume method to model the guidewire using the linear elasticity theory and forces resulting from the interference of magnetic fields. Simulations illustrate the approach performance on a soft rod, demonstrating its potential for constructing rapid models for continuum manipulators in practice.
