The aim of this work was to prepare and test different pharmaceutical formulations in respect of their potential in relieving dry mouth symptom. Since many of the products available on the market provide only temporary relief to the patients, there is need for new formulations able to retain on the oral mucosa. The prolonged moisture protection could be achieved by combining mucoadhesive materials, such as polymers containing hydrogen bonding groups, with vesicles capable of releasing hydration medium from the inner compartment. In this study three different types of liposomes (positively, negatively and neutrally charged) were coated with five different types of polymers: low-methoxylated pectin (LM pectin), high-methoxylated pectin (HM-pectin), alginate, chitosan and hydrophobically modified ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HM-EHEC). The particle size and the zeta potential of the obtained carriers were tested by measuring dynamic light scattering (DLS) and electrophoretic mobility. Later on, selected positively charged liposomes were deposited on a negatively charged mica surface and depicted by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The water sorption properties of polymers, uncoated liposomes and polymer-coated liposomes were studied by the means of dynamic vapor sorption (DVS). The experiments were performed within the relative humidity range RH = 95-0-95%, at 35 degrees C. It was found that coating the liposomes with polymers significantly increased the water sorption capacity of the formulations, making them an attractive choice for hydration of the oral mucosa. The correlations among the skin conductance features responding to physiological stress stimuli

Dindar S. Bari, Haval Y. Yacoob Aldosky, Christian Tronstad, Orjan G. Martinsen

Summary: The study shows that about 55% of the variation in the half recovery time can be explained by the rise time, while the amplitude of the skin conductance responses and the skin conductance level are independent and cannot be explained by the other features.

Current trends and opportunities in the methodology of electrodermal activity measurement

Christian Tronstad, Maryam Amini, Dominik R. Bach, orjan G. Martinsen

Summary: Electrodermal activity (EDA) measurement has been transferred from the laboratory to wearable devices, bringing along new applications and opportunities. Challenges remain for the quality of wearable EDA measurement, but ongoing developments in instrumentation, material technology, and data science may shorten the quality gap between wearable EDA and standardized recordings in the laboratory.

Small intestinal viability assessment using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy and deep learning

Jie Hou, Runar Strand-Amundsen, Christian Tronstad, Tor Inge Tonnessen, Jan Olav Hogetveit, Orjan Grottem Martinsen

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics of different degrees of intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury using permittivity data and proposed a method for assessing intestinal viability based on dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The results showed that dielectric parameters can be used to distinguish healthy, ischemic, and reperfused intestinal segments. Additionally, machine learning models were used to classify intestinal tissue based on its frequency dependent dielectric properties, providing a fast and accurate method for intraoperative decision-making.

The Potential of Chitosan in Nanomedicine: An Overview of the Cytotoxicity of Chitosan Based Nanoparticles

Julie Frigaard, Janicke Liaaen Jensen, Hilde Kanli Galtung, Marianne Hiorth

Summary: Nanotechnology has found unique applications in drug delivery, cosmetics, fabrics, water treatment, and food packaging. Chitosan, a nanoparticle derived from natural polysaccharide chitin, has gained attention in modern medicine for its unique properties. This review examines the cytotoxicity of chitosan nanoparticles in biomedical research, revealing low cytotoxicity regardless of particle composition or assay method. However, thorough characterization and cytotoxicity assessment are recommended for new chitosan derivatives and compositions before market implementation.

Preparation of stable polymer-liposome complexes by a novel approach employing a one-pot method

Joseph Azumah, Gro Smistad, Marianne Hiorth

Summary: This study aimed to prepare stable polymer-liposome complexes using a new one-pot method, which showed better stability and fewer steps compared to the conventional thin-film method. Alginate-liposome complexes had uniform size distributions and high stability, while chitosan-liposome complexes require further investigation for size reduction methods.

Utilization of dielectric properties for assessment of liver ischemia-reperfusion injury in vivo and during machine perfusion

Jie Hou, Olav Magnus Ivar Liavag, Ida Hoy Faerden, Orjan Grottem Martinsen, Tor Inge Tonnessen, Pal-Dag Line, Morten Hagness, Jan Olav Hogetveit, Soren Erik Pischke, Runar Strand-Amundsen

Summary: There is a global shortage of donor livers, leading to the death of patients on waiting lists. Researchers have assessed the condition of porcine livers by monitoring their microwave dielectric properties, aiming to expand the pool of available donor livers. The study found that dielectric relaxation spectroscopy can be used to detect and differentiate liver injuries, providing a standardized and reliable evaluation method for livers prior to transplantation.

Assessment of Intestinal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Using Diffuse Reflectance VIS-NIR Spectroscopy and Histology

Jie Hou, Siri Schone Ness, Jon Tschudi, Marion O'Farrell, Rune Veddegjerde, orjan Grottem Martinsen, Tor Inge Tonnessen, Runar Strand-Amundsen

Summary: This study used a porcine model to investigate the feasibility of using VIS-NIR spectroscopy to differentiate between degrees of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the small intestine. Two models were built and showed promising results in differentiating between control, ischemic, and reperfused intestinal segments, as well as viable versus non-viable segments. This method, combined with a PLS-DA model, appears to be a potentially real-time intraoperative method for assessing intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Summary: This paper establishes a physics-based simulation framework for steering a magnetically actuated guidewire based on the linear elasticity and dipoles theories. The framework employs a simplified integration scheme based on the finite-volume method to model the guidewire using the linear elasticity theory and forces resulting from the interference of magnetic fields. Simulations illustrate the approach performance on a soft rod, demonstrating its potential for constructing rapid models for continuum manipulators in practice.
