Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association of the multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) based on comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) with survival in elderly patients undergoing TAVI. The results showed that patients in the MPI-1 group had a higher overall survival rate compared to those in the MPI-2-3 group, suggesting that the MPI tool could be useful for assessing frailty and predicting which patients may benefit more from TAVI procedures.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of transcatheter interventions to treat paravalvular regurgitation (PVR) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The results showed that patients with successful reduction of PVR had better prognosis, but further investigation is needed to determine the selection of patients and the optimal treatment modality for PVR.

Summary: The aim of the study was to provide real-world data on outcomes for elderly Taiwanese patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement or surgical aortic valve replacement in different risk groups. The results showed that in all risk groups, patients in the TAVI group had shorter hospital stay and higher rate of paravalvular leakage compared to the SAVR group, but there were no significant differences in mortality rates between the two groups. Risk factors for higher 1-year and 5-year mortality included BMI less than 20 and acute kidney injury.

Summary: In a large series of ViV-TAVR procedures, the incidence of periprocedural PPI was relatively low and decreased with the use of new-generation THV systems. Older age, larger THV size, and previous right bundle branch block were associated with an increased risk of PPI. Although there were no significant differences in 30-day mortality between the PPI and no-PPI groups, PPI patients exhibited a trend toward higher mortality risk at follow-up.

Summary: This study aims to determine the prevalence of ATTR-CM in elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis and evaluate the differences in clinical presentation and outcomes of patients with concomitant ATTR-CM undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation. The results showed that ATTR-CM was observed in 10.8% of patients with severe aortic stenosis, and elderly age, male sex, and prior carpal tunnel surgery were associated with the coexistence of ATTR-CM. However, there were no significant differences in peri-interventional risk and one-year clinical outcomes between patients with concomitant pathologies.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the disease activity in native aortic valves and durability of bioprosthetic valves in patients who underwent TAVI, comparing them with those who had bioprosthetic SAVR. The findings suggest that TAVI patients show ongoing disease activity in their native aortic valves, but the durability of bioprosthetic valves in TAVI is similar to that in bioprosthetic SAVR in the midterm.

Summary: This study evaluated clinical outcomes in diabetic patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The results showed that diabetic patients had comparable mortality rates and other adverse clinical outcomes to non-diabetic patients. This indicates the safety of TAVI treatment in diabetic patients.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the impact of cardiac damage extent on survival in severe aortic stenosis patients undergoing TAVI. TAVI had a positive effect on left ventricular diastolic and right ventricular function post-operatively. However, the extent of cardiac damage at baseline significantly influenced the risk of mortality at 1-year follow-up.

Summary: The availability of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and the development of heart teams have led to improved in-hospital outcomes for surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) patients at TAVI centers compared to non-TAVI centers. However, there is no difference in the incidence of stroke, permanent pacemaker placement, and acute kidney injury between the two centers.

Summary: Social companion robots are gaining attention for their potential in aiding elderly people to maintain independence and reduce social isolation. Designing usable applications for elderly individuals remains a challenge, which is being addressed through co-creation methodologies in the ACCRA project. This research explores how Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) technology and co-creation methodologies can contribute to the design of emotionally-responsive robotic applications.

The findings showed that most RA patients, especially elderly patients, were treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and csDMARDs rather than bDMARDs/tsDMARDs during the first year post-diagnosis, highlighting the need for better management of barriers in the use of these agents.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term mortality rates of elderly patients with burn injuries and the predictors affecting outcome. The study found higher one-year and five-year mortality rates among elderly burn patients. Predictors for mortality included age, severe comorbidity, and non-home discharge location. This suggests that elderly patients are at higher risk of death following burn injuries.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the differences in non-invasive hemodynamics in LVAD patients of different age categories and their association with adverse events. The results showed that older LVAD patients had higher heart rate, heart rate-adjusted augmentation index, and pulse wave velocity, and lower stroke volume compared to younger participants. Patients with adverse events had lower central pulse pressure compared to those without any adverse event.

Summary: The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) launched the Sarcopenic Obesity Global Leadership Initiative (SOGLI) to reach expert consensus on a definition and diagnostic criteria for Sarcopenic Obesity (SO). The present paper describes the proceeding of the Sarcopenic Obesity Global Leadership Initiative (SOGLI) meeting that was held on November 25th and 26th, 2022 in Rome, Italy. This consortium involved the participation of 50 researchers from different geographic regions and countries. The document outlines an agenda advocated by the SOGLI expert panel regarding the pathophysiology, screening, diagnosis, staging, and treatment of SO that needs to be prioritized for future research in the field.

Summary: This study investigated the age and sex trajectories, regional differences, and global reference values of arterial stiffness. The results showed that the global age-standardized means of pulse wave velocity were 12.5 m/s for brachial-ankle PWV and 7.45 m/s for carotid-femoral PWV. Males had higher levels than females, and there were regional differences across different countries.

Summary: This study investigated the longitudinal alteration in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over a two-year period among older adults with early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its association with CKD progression. The results showed that 41% of the participants experienced a decline in HRQoL, and 16.3% showed kidney function decline. Participants with HRQoL decline had higher levels of depression and greater decline in physical performance. The decline in kidney function did not contribute to the decline in HRQoL, but higher levels of depression and better physical performance were associated with less HRQoL decline.

Summary: Biochemical markers in clinical trials provide useful information on drug's mode of action, therapeutic response, and side effect monitoring. Identifying biomarkers for sarcopenia management is urgently needed for future clinical practice. A consensus paper from a working group of the ESCEO proposed a list of biochemical markers for musculoskeletal health and aging in Phase II and III clinical trials for sarcopenia treatment, and suggested classifying them into two series based on their evaluation of musculoskeletal status and causal factors.

Summary: This article describes the evidence on the usefulness of a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)-based approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. The multidimensional, CGA-based approach allows better identification of individual risk profiles and frailty status of infected, recovered but with a post-COVID-19 condition, and non-infected older adults. Capturing older patients' needs through CGA may offer the possibility to guide clinical decision and implement personalized medicine.
