24-Hour Carotid Stent Patency and Outcomes After Endovascular Therapy: A Multicenter Study

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of stent occlusion after acute carotid artery stenting and its impact on patients. The results showed that 20.9% of patients experienced stent occlusion within a short period of time, which was associated with worse functional outcome. Stroke etiology, administration of P2Y(12) antagonists, quality of intracranial reperfusion, and angioplasty were associated with stent patency at 24 hours.

Summary: The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a unique brainstem reflex that can occur during interventional neuroradiology procedures, especially in cases of intracranial internal carotid artery occlusion (ICAO). Surgeons should be aware of the possibility of TCR during endovascular recanalization of intracranial ICAO, and consider using low-pressure contrast injections and having anticholinergics ready.

Imaging Predictors for Endovascular Recanalization of Non-acute Occlusion of Internal Carotid Artery Based on 3D T1-SPACE MRI and DSA

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the safety, effect, and risk factors of endovascular recanalization of symptomatic non-acute occlusion of the vertebrobasilar artery (SNOVA). The results showed that endovascular recanalization of symptomatic non-acute occlusion of the vertebrobasilar artery is feasible with a high recanalization rate, a low complication rate, and a good prognosis. Blunt occlusion and duration from the onset to recanalization may affect successful recanalization and peri-procedural complications while post-dilatation may affect in-stent restenosis and prognosis.

Futile Recanalization After Endovascular Treatment in Patients With Acute Basilar Artery Occlusion

Summary: The study aimed to identify factors associated with futile recanalization in acute basilar artery occlusion (ABAO) patients after successful reperfusion. The findings revealed that higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, longer puncture to recanalization time, incomplete reperfusion, stroke severity, lower baseline posterior circulation Alberta Stroke Program Early CT score, poor collaterals, and diabetes mellitus were independent predictors of futile recanalization. These predictors can guide treatment decisions in ABAO patients undergoing reperfusion therapy.

Safety and effectiveness assessment of endovascular recanalization for non-acute middle cerebral artery occlusion

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness and safety of drug treatment and endovascular treatment in patients with symptomatic nonacute middle cerebral artery occlusion. The results showed that endovascular treatment achieved a high rate of successful recanalization (94.6%), with low rates of peri-procedural complications. Therefore, for patients with mild nonacute middle cerebral artery occlusion, endovascular treatment is a safe and effective approach that can reduce the recurrence rate of stroke.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics of 57 patients with internal carotid artery near occlusion or complete occlusion who underwent surgical recanalization, finding that narrowness of the distal internal carotid artery after hybrid recanalization was more prevalent in male patients with complete occlusion. Most patients in the narrowness group had their distal ICA recover to normal within 1 week postoperatively.

Endovascular recanalization for symptomatic chronic internal carotid artery occlusion: proposal of a modified angiographic classification and clinical outcomes

Summary: This study stratifies angiographic images of chronic internal carotid artery occlusion (CICAO) into four types based on angiographic characteristics and identifies different success rates of endovascular recanalization for each type. The follow-up evaluations show significant improvement in the prognosis of successfully revascularized patients. This newly modified angiographic classification is comprehensive and useful in selecting suitable patients for recanalization and assessing the difficulty of the procedures.

Posterior Limb of Internal Capsule Infarct Predicts Functional Outcome in Acute Terminal Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion After Thrombectomy

Summary: This study investigated the impact of posterior limb of internal capsule (PLIC) infarct on outcomes of acute internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) and the diagnostic accuracy of pretreatment noncontrast computerized tomography (NCCT) and computerized tomography angiography (CTA) findings. The results showed that PLIC infarct is an independent risk factor for worse clinical outcome at 90 days, and the lack of choroid plexus enhancement (CPE) is associated with PLIC infarct. Pretreatment CTA can be useful for early diagnosis.

Air-containing necrosis as the imaging predictor for imminent carotid blowout in patients with head and neck cancer

Summary: This study describes the radiological features that can predict imminent carotid blowout in patients with head and neck cancer. It was found that larger tumors, closer proximity to the carotid trunk, greater involvement of the carotid trunk, more heterogeneous enhancement patterns, and the presence of air-containing necrosis were associated with a higher risk of imminent carotid blowout. The presence of air-containing necrosis was identified as a significant risk factor for imminent carotid blowout.

Original Article Investigating sphingolipids as biomarkers for the outcomes of acute ischemic stroke patients receiving endovascular treatment

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plasma ceramides and sphingosine-1-phosphate levels in acute ischemic stroke patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) and their clinical outcomes. The results showed that long-chain ceramides were significantly elevated in AIS patients compared to controls, while the levels of sphingosine-1-phosphate were significantly lower. Additionally, specific types of ceramides could serve as early prognostic indicators for AIS patients undergoing EVT.

Association of temporalis muscle thickness with functional outcomes in patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy

Summary: This study investigated the association between temporalis muscle thickness (TMT) and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for stroke. The results showed that TMT was associated with clinical functional outcomes, and factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and premorbid functional independence were related to TMT size. Larger TMT was an independent predictor of favorable functional independence. The effect of TMT was more pronounced in older patients.

The Extent of Tumor Invasion and Therapeutic Embolization Are Associated with Recurrent Hemorrhage in Patients with External Carotid Artery Blowout Syndrome

Summary: This study explored the optimal strategies of therapeutic embolization for patients with carotid blowout syndrome in the external carotid artery. The extent of arterial invasion and concordance with therapeutic embolization were found to be associated with a lower risk of recurrent bleeding. Air-containing necrosis around the ICA/CCA was also identified as a risk factor for recurrent bleeding.

Association of Ferroptosis with Severity and Outcomes in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Undergoing Endovascular Thrombectomy: A Case-control Study

Summary: This study found that plasma ferroptosis biomarkers at the hyperacute stage are associated with long-term outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing EVT. The severity of stroke at admission is correlated with levels of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR). Moreover, plasma homocysteine levels are associated with functional outcome and mortality at 3 months post-EVT.
