In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has undergone a rapid growth, therefore several processes based on different working principles (e.g. photopolymerization, sintering, extrusion, material jetting, etc) are now available and allow to manufacture parts using a wide range of materials. Consequently, the so-called benchmark artifacts are necessary to assess the capabilities and limitations of each AM process or to compare the performance of different processes. This paper focuses on the benchmark artifacts for evaluating the geometrical performance of AM processes and proposes an extensive review of the available literature, analyzing the design of such test parts in detail. The investigated test parts are classified according to the process aspect that they are able to evaluate (dimensional/geometrical accuracy, repeatability, minimum feature size) and the combination AM process/materials for which they have been used. In addition, the paper draws a summary of guidelines to design benchmark artifacts for geometrical performance evaluation.

Assessing the Relationships between Interdigital Geometry Quality and Inkjet Printing Parameters

Federico Bertolucci, Nicolo Berdozzi, Lara Rebaioli, Trunal Patil, Rocco Vertechy, Irene Fassi

Summary: Drop on demand (DoD) inkjet printing is a high precision, non-contact, and maskless additive manufacturing technique utilized for producing high-precision micrometer-scaled geometries. This study investigates the influence of main printing parameters on the accuracy of a representative geometry and determines the optimal parameter combination. The results indicate that choosing the highest speed value within the investigated range can increase productivity.

Manufacturing challenges and technological solutions for microwave ablation (MWA) probe prototyping

Marcello Valori, Lara Rebaioli, Valeria Marrocco, Francesco Modica, Francesco Bonelli, Giuseppe Pascazio, Vincenza Portosi, Francesco Prudenzano, Antonella Fasano, Vito Lampignano, Irene Fassi

Summary: This paper addresses the manufacturing challenges and technological solutions for prototyping microwave ablation (MWA) probes. A case study of a 14G MWA probe prototype, working at a frequency of 2.45GHz, is presented to demonstrate the design efforts and the use of rapid prototyping technologies. The experimental results show that the prototype exhibits satisfactory performance and structural reliability.

Cyber-physical systems for end-of-life management of printed circuit boards and mechatronics products in home automation: A review

Trunal Patil, Lara Rebaioli, Irene Fassi

Summary: Due to rapid changes in consumer demand and electronic technology advancements, strategies for End-of-Life (EOL) management of electronics products, specifically in the home automation segment, need to be adapted. This paper reviews current practices and issues related to EOL management of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and mechatronics products in the home automation segment, and focuses on their material compositions and uses in the circular economy perspective. Additionally, possible Cyber-Physical System (CPS) implementation scenarios using physical tools available at the STIIMA-CNR de-manufacturing pilot plant are provided. Challenges and guidelines to develop a new generation of advanced EOL management through the Cyber-Physical System technique are highlighted.
