Kidney disease is common in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and is associated with adverse health outcomes, including progression to end-stage renal disease. In the general population, adherence to a healthy lifestyle is known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and death. Among individuals with diabetic kidney disease, modifications in lifestyle factors, including diet, physical activity, smoking habits, and body mass index, represent a promising cost-effective therapeutic adjunct to pharmacologic treatment of kidney disease incidence and progression.

Summary: The study showed that refractory hypertension (RfH) is associated with worse long-term health outcomes compared with treatment-resistant hypertension (TRH), including worsening renal and cardiovascular outcomes. However, there was no significant difference in the all-cause mortality between individuals with RfH and TRH.

Longitudinal Changes in Prorenin and Renin in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort

Monique E. Cho, Carol Sweeney, Nora Fino, Tom Greene, Nirupama Ramkumar, Yufeng Huang, Ana C. Ricardo, Tariq Shafi, Rajat Deo, Amanda Anderson, Katherine T. Mills, Alfred K. Cheung

Summary: In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), plasma concentrations of prorenin and renin showed a decreasing trend, especially in those with severe conditions at baseline. Women and non-Hispanic blacks had lower prorenin and renin values at year 1, while diabetes, lower eGFR, and use of certain medications were associated with higher levels of prorenin and renin.

Summary: By analyzing data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, the study found that unhealthy diet, particularly indicated by low AHEI-2010 scores, was associated with kidney function decline. Improving the nutritional quality of the diet according to AHEI-2010 may help maintain kidney function in the Hispanic/Latino community.
