The aim of this study is to identify the extraction conditions, using supercritical carbon dioxide as solvent, that maximize the yield of volatile extract from the seeds of Anethum graveolens L. by the use of the response surface method, where the variables pressure, temperature and flow rate of supercritical CO2 were investigated. A 23 factorial design combined with response surface methodology was used in order to achieve the goal. The best set of experimental conditions was determined to be P=100 bar, T=35 degrees C and solvent flow rate = 1000 g/h. The mathematical modeling of the extraction curve was performed under the best experimental conditions, and the olfactory profile of the extract and its antimicrobial activity were compared with the oil obtained from hydrodistillation. The gas chromatography analysis (GC) identified dillapiole, carvone and its isomers to be major compounds. The olfactory profile of A. graveolens extracts obtained was determined by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), and the most often identified aroma was cheese/bacon for the hydrodistillation oil, whereas in the supercritical extract, the most often identified aroma was burning bush. Extraction and fractionation of long pepper essential oil: process modeling and simulation

Rafael Nolibos Almeida, Guilherme Evaldt Rossa, Jessica Haupt de Castro, Arthur Fagundes Cavassa, Rubem Mario Figueiro Vargas, Eduardo Cassel

Summary: Steam distillation is a traditional method for obtaining essential oils, but its parameters have been determined empirically. In this study, the effects of pressure, temperature, time, and bed porosity on essential oil extraction were evaluated. Piper hispidinervum C. DC essential oil showed similar yields under different pressure conditions, but the bed porosity varied. The experimental data fitted well with the model proposed by Reverchon. Fractionation of long pepper oil in a batch distillation column resulted in fractions with high purity of safrole and terpinolene. Adjusting the process variables reduced extraction time and improved cost-effectiveness and product value.

Structural changes of poplar lignin during the ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment and synergetic alkali-DES treatment

Jingmo Zhou, Shubin Wu, Ying Liu

Summary: Expenditure isolation of lignin and the understanding of its structural variations during different isolation processes are crucial for the high-value utilization of lignin. This study proposed a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and 4-chlorobenzene sulfonic acid for rapid lignin separation from poplar. The structural variations of DES lignin and its relationship with alkali pre-extraction of hemicellulose were investigated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment enhanced the DES separation of lignin and promoted the cleavage of specific linkages, resulting in reduced molecular weight and thermal stability of isolated DES lignin. Moreover, DES lignin obtained from integrated utilization displayed higher purity and S/G ratio compared to lignin obtained from direct DES treatment.
