Summary: The study compared the healing patterns between immediate and delayed applications of BMP-2 in damaged extraction sockets in dogs. The results showed that delayed application of BMP-2 2 weeks after surgery did not provide any advantage over immediate application in terms of new bone formation, despite observing larger bone formation area in the control group.

Summary: Bioactive glasses have been traditionally used for permeating and repairing bone defects, with 45S5 Bio glass being a prime artificial material developed by Larry Hench. These materials have exceptional biocompatibility and can form a HA coat in the body. Various synthesis techniques have been developed for bioactive glasses containing biocompatible polymers, aiming to review the modern evolution of glass for bone regeneration. These glasses can connect to osseous matter and restore new bone growth over time, ultimately restoring the ailing or defective bone to its original condition and function.

Summary: The study evaluated alveolar bone remodeling after tooth extraction in a rabbit model, with or without the use of a collagen plug, through micro-computed tomography. It found that sockets treated with the collagen plug showed significantly less dimensional resorption compared to the natural-healing group.

Summary: Lithography based additive manufacturing techniques, such as digital light processing (DLP), have the potential to construct complex orthopaedic implants using polymers, metals, and ceramics. In this study, hydroxyapatite (HA) coupons printed using DLP were evaluated for their biological performance in supporting cell viability, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. The results showed that the HA coupons had favorable characteristics for cell culture and did not impact cell behavior. The study concluded that the DLP process and LithaBone HA400 slurry are biocompatible and suitable for osteogenic applications.

Summary: The study developed PLA EFMs with surface coatings of cellulose nanofibrils and silk peptide, enhancing biocompatibility and promoting conjunctival epithelial cell proliferation. The composite scaffolds loaded with levofloxacin showed excellent therapeutic effects for severe conjunctival fibrosis while reducing antibiotic use.

Summary: This study assessed the clinical and histological healing of a post-extractive alveolus in a patient receiving oral bisphosphonates for more than 6 years, showing successful socket preservation using specific materials. The case report supports the eligibility of surgical therapy for patients undergoing oral bisphosphonate therapy, highlighting the need for more clinical studies to further support this evidence.

Summary: This review summarizes the various materials used for bone defect replacement or repair in dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgeries. Factors such as tissue viability, size, shape, and defect volume influence the choice of material. Autologous bone is the gold standard for bone grafting but has limitations. Alternatives include allografts, xenografts, and synthetic materials. Calcium-phosphate-based ceramics, especially hydroxyapatite, are commonly used due to their similarity to natural bone. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of grafting materials in dentistry and discusses their properties, advantages, and challenges.

Summary: Following tooth extraction, socket healing occurs with a marked reduction in ridge dimensions. The quantity and quality of socket walls influence ridge diminution. A damaged socket with fewer walls and a thin buccal bone wall negatively impact healing outcome. Periodontally compromised sockets lead to extensive dimensional changes. Angulation between tooth and basal bone, as well as basal bone dimensions, also affect socket healing. Anatomical characteristics of the alveolar process and basal bone play a role in socket healing.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the surface chemistries of two different implant surfaces in failing dental implants. The results indicated that different parts of the implants affected by peri-implant inflammation showed varying surface chemistries, but there was no significant difference between implants with different surfaces.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of tonsilloliths and investigate the association between tonsilloliths and dental plaque-related pathologies. The findings indicated that cases with tonsilloliths had a higher number of missing teeth and apical periodontitis compared to cases without tonsilloliths. The mean percentage of bone loss was also significantly higher in the tonsillolith group. Computed tomography studies and randomized, prospective, clinical trials are needed to confirm these associations.
