An ophiosphaerella-like species was collected from dead stems of a grass (Poaceae) in Northern Thailand. Combined analysis of LSU, SSU and RPB2 gene data, showed that the species clusters with Lentithecium arundinaceum, Setoseptoria phragmitis and Stagonospora macropycnidia in the family Lentitheciaceae and is close to Katumotoa bambusicola and Ophiosphaerella sasicola. Therefore, a monotypic genus, Poaceascoma is introduced to accommodate the scolecosporous species Poaceascoma helicoides. The species has similar morphological characters to the genera Acanthophiobolus, Leptospora and Ophiosphaerella and these genera are compared.

Summary: In this study, a new species called Scolecohyalosporium thailandense is described and characterized based on morphological and molecular approaches. The species was found on the grass Imperata sp. in terrestrial habitats in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Phylogenetic analyses showed that S. thailandense is closely related to the type species of the genus, S. submersum, forming a distinct clade within the family Parabambusicolaceae. This study provides morphological characteristics, illustrations, updated phylogenetic analyses, and discusses the distinctiveness of S. thailandense compared to closely related taxa.

Taxonomy and phylogenetic studies revealed Parabambusicola yunnanensis sp. nov. (Parabambusicolaceae, Pleosporales) on bamboo from Yunnan, China

Li-su Han, Dong-qin Dai, Tian-ye Du, Nalin N. Wijayawardene, Itthayakorn Promputtha, D. Jayarama Bhat, Yong Gao

Summary: A sample of bambusicolous ascomycete was collected from Dali, Yunnan Province, China. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the new collection belongs to a new species, Parabambusicola yunnanensis, which is basal to other Parabambusicola species. Morphological characteristics, such as 8-spored asci and fusiform to vermiform ascospores, further supported its classification.

Morpho-phylogeny characterization of Linocarpon bambusina sp. nov. (Linocarpaceae, Chaetosphaeriales) associated with bamboo in Yunnan Province, China

Xian Zhang, Dongqin Dai, Tianye Du, Samantha C. Karunarathna, Saowaluck Tibpromma

Summary: A new saprophytic fungus, named Linocarpon bambusina sp. nov., was discovered in the bamboo-rich region of Yunnan Province, China. Molecular phylogenetic analyses and morphological comparisons were conducted to confirm its distinct characteristics, such as semi-immersed ascomata, fusiform asci, and ascospores with 28-30 septa. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the diversity in the bamboo ecosystem in China.

Insights from the Endophytic Fungi in Amphisphaeria (Sordariomycetes): A. orixae sp. nov. from Orixa japonica and Its Secondary Metabolites

Xiaojie Wang, Dhanushka N. Wanasinghe, Jingyi Zhang, Jian Ma, Peifeng Zhou, Lijuan Zhang, Yongzhong Lu, Zhen Zhang

Summary: A novel endophytic fungus was discovered in the roots of a medicinal plant in Southern China and identified as a new species based on morphological and molecular analysis. A new isocoumarin and 12 known compounds were isolated from the rice fermentation products of this fungus. Unfortunately, none of these compounds showed significant antitumor activity.

Plant-Fungi Interactions: Where It Goes?

A. K. Hasith Priyashantha, Dong-Qin Dai, Darbhe J. J. Bhat, Steven L. L. Stephenson, Itthayakorn Promputtha, Prashant Kaushik, Saowaluck Tibpromma, Samantha C. C. Karunarathna

Summary: Fungi can form various associations with plants, including pathogenic and symbiotic relationships. Pathogenic fungi cause diseases in plants and exert pressure on their survival. On the other hand, plants benefit from interactions with symbiotic fungi. Changes in climate can influence the interactions between plants and fungi, either positively or negatively. This paper explores these interactions and their importance in agricultural practices.

Continental-scale insights into the soil microbial co-occurrence networks of Australia and their environmental drivers

Heng Gui, Martin Breed, Yan Li, Qiang Xu, Jianbo Yang, Dhanushka N. Wanasinghe, Yunju Li, Jianchu Xu, Peter Mortimer

Summary: Soil microbial communities and their interactions have a critical role in shaping ecosystem functions at regional and continental scales. Co-occurrence network analyses have been used to study microbial interactions, but understanding how different environmental factors affect these networks at the continental scale is challenging. By analyzing data from Australian study sites, researchers inferred a meta-community level soil microbial cooccurrence network for the continent and found that different vegetation types and environmental factors influenced the topological parameters of these networks.
