Zeloasperisporiales ord. nov., and two new species of Zeloasperisporium

Neomicrothyrium is an epiphytic genus that forms small black dots on the surface of living or dead fallen leaves, although it rarely causes any damage to the host. Based on its flattened thyriothecia, it was considered that Neomicrothyrium belongs in the order Microthyriales, a group of fungi that is relatively poorly studied. Microthyriaceae- like taxa appearing as small black dots on leaves were collected in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, and studied using morphological characterization and phylogenetic analyses. As a result of molecular and morphological study, we established that Neomicrothyrium is linked to the asexual genus Zeloasperisporium and that we had collected two new taxa. Two new species, Zeloasperisporium ficusicola and Z. wrightiae are therefore introduced in this study based on morphology and phylogeny. Neomicrothyrium is linked to Zeloasperisporium and is therefore synonymized under the older name Zeloasperisporium. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU and SSU rDNA sequence data indicate that Zeloasperisporiaceae belong in the class Dothideomycetes, but clusters with Natipusillales in a distinct lineage from Microthyriales. We therefore introduce a new order, Zeloasperisporiales to accommodate the family Zeloasperisporiaceae. The life cycle of Zeloasperisporium species is remarkable. The sexual morph produces ascomata on the leaf surface and appears to lack any other structures and it is unclear how the ascomata obtain nutrients. The asexual morph produces conidia which can be found on the surface of plants, or in air, but it is also unclear how conidia obtain their nutrients. In this study, isolates from the sexual morph produced asexual morphs in culture.

Summary: The present study demonstrates the enhanced photodegradation of organic dyes (Congo red and rhodamine B) under visible light irradiation using AgIO4 nanorods decorated on Bi2S3 nanoflakes. The deposition of AgIO4 on Bi2S3 plays a crucial role in improving the photodegradation ability. The nanohybrids showed excellent photodegradation performance and good reusability, making them potential candidates for the removal of organic pollutants from contaminated water bodies.

Designing intimate porous Al2O3 decorated 2D CdO nano-heterojunction as enhanced white light driven photocatalyst and antibacterial agent

Summary: The mesoporous network of gamma-Al2O3 ceramic support was coupled with hexagonal CdO nanoplates to fabricate a photocatalyst with excellent optoelectrical properties. The nanohybrid showed high efficiency in degrading methylene blue, good reusability, and promising potential for environmental remediation applications.

Fabrication of intimately coupled CeO2/ZnFe2O4 nano-heterojunction for visible-light photocatalysis and bactericidal application

Summary: The present study fabricated CeO2/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites and evaluated their visible-light-driven catalytic efficiency for degradation of dyes. The results showed that CeO2/ZnFe2O4 NCs-2:1 exhibited higher visible-light catalytic activity and degradation efficiency, indicating its potential as a photocatalyst.

Efficacy of Gold Nanoparticles against Drug-Resistant Nosocomial Fungal Pathogens and Their Extracellular Enzymes: Resistance Profiling towards Established Antifungal Agents

Summary: The drug resistance of filamentous fungi to antifungal agents is a major concern in medicine. This study investigated the effectiveness of AuNPs synthesized using Mentha piperita against multi-drug resistant Aspergillus species. The results show that these nanoparticles do not possess particularly effective antifungal properties, but they did inhibit some fungal isolates and caused significant alterations in the extracellular enzyme activity of the nosocomial fungi.

Multigene Phylogeny Reveals Endophytic Xylariales Novelties from Dendrobium Species from Southwestern China and Northern Thailand

Summary: In this study, surface sterilization and morph-molecular methods were used to isolate and identify Xylariales from Dendrobium. The formation of lattice expansion induced oxygen vacancies and n-p-n heterojunction-based S-scheme charge transfer path contributed to the boosted photocatalytic performance.

Endophytic Fungi Associated with Mango Show In Vitro Antagonism against Bacterial and Fungal Pathogens

Summary: In this study, 34 different fungal endophytic strains were isolated from healthy mango leaves in Yunnan Province. The dominant fungal endophytes were from the genus Chaetomium. Co-cultivation assays showed that certain strains of Chaetomium sp. exhibited strong inhibition against bacterial pathogens and various other fungal strains showed moderate to strong antagonistic effects against fungal pathogens.

Cordycepspoluscapitis sp. nov., an ant-pathogenic fungus from Guizhou, China

Summary: A novel species of entomopathogenic fungi, Cordyceps poluscapitis, was discovered on ants in Guizhou Province, China. It exhibits both sexual and asexual morphology, characterized by brightly colored, fleshy stromata and long, filiform ascospores. Additionally, this unique species parasitizes ants and produces conidia with multiple septa. Phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data of 6-loci genes (ITS, SSU, LSU, TEF, RPB1 and RPB2) confirmed it as a new species in Cordyceps.
