Non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli are now one of the most important causes of severe infections in Polish hospitals. Acinetobacter species are serious concern because of the high prevalence of multi-drug resistance among strains. Resistance profiles for 53 Gram-negative non-fermentative blood isolates were done. MLST was carried out using 44 strains representing the most commonly isolated species: A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, and S. maltophilia. MLST revealed that all 22 A. baumannii belonged to sequence type (ST) 2. The P. aeruginosa isolates belonged to 10 different STs. Four S. maltophilia isolates matched STs present in the database (ST4, ST15, ST116, ST142), seven isolates showing novel sequence types. Among P. aeruginosa and S. maltophilia PFGE confirmed the genetical variety of strains.

Anna Rozanska, Jerzy Rosinski, Andrzej Jarynowski, Katarzyna Baranowska-Tateno, Malgorzata Siewierska, Jadwiga Wojkowska-Mach, Marta Walaszek, Joanna Domanska, Joanna Liberda, Agnieszka Misiewska-Kaczur, Marzena Lech, Malgorzata Rozwadowska, Marlena Karwacka

Summary: This study analyzed the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) in Poland, finding that the highest rates occurred in June and August after surgeries, while the lowest rate was in October. The study also showed that bacterial infections were significantly higher in the period from November to January and from June to August, which may be attributed to increased absences associated with holidays and furloughs. Efforts are needed to establish a comprehensive surveillance network for hospital-acquired infections, including SSIs, at the national level.

Preparedness of Health Care Workers and Medical Students in University Hospital in Krakow for COVID-19 Pandemic within the CRACoV Project

Barbara Zoltowska, Ilona Baranska, Katarzyna Szczerbinska, Anna Rozanska, Krzysztof Mydel, Wojciech Sydor, Piotr B. Heczko, Estera Jachowicz, Jadwiga Wojkowska-Mach

Summary: The study revealed inadequate IPC practices among healthcare workers, especially in terms of training programs. There is an urgent need to include theory and practice of IPC in the curricula of health professions training to equip students with necessary knowledge and skills for both future pandemic situations and everyday work.

Summary: The study compared the annual incidence of vaccine-preventable childhood diseases in EU and EFTA countries over the past 5 years, showing variations in vaccine schedules and disease epidemiology. The increasing incidence of diseases like measles, potentially influenced by anti-vaccine movements and misinformation, highlights the need for standardization of vaccine schedules and documentation in EU countries.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in relation to demographic, social, and organizational factors at a university hospital. The results showed that the use of personal protective equipment did not significantly affect the testing results for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, while caring for COVID-19 patients significantly increased the risk of developing the disease. Not being aware of the COVID-19 status of healthcare workers posed a threat to other staff members, patients, and their family members and friends. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using respirators with exhalation valves during the pandemic.

Estera Jachowicz, Agnieszka Pac, Anna Rozanska, Barbara Gryglewska, Jadwiga Wojkowska-Mach

Summary: This observational study aimed to analyze the incidence of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) after discharge in patients undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty, and identified postoperative antibiotic prescription as the main risk factor for CDI. The study highlights the importance of improving infection control programs for CDI prevention.

Healthcare-Acquired Infection Surveillance in Neurosurgery Patients, Incidence and Microbiology, Five Years of Experience in Two Polish Units

Elzbieta Rafa, Malgorzata Kolpa, Marta Zofia Walaszek, Adam Domanski, Michal Jan Walaszek, Anna Rozanska, Jadwiga Wojkowska-Mach

Summary: This study conducted in neurosurgery units in Poland investigated the epidemiology and microbiology of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). The results suggest that the surveillance system in hospital B could lead to better detection of infections and lower risk of certain types of HAI compared to hospital A. Further research is needed in this area.

Antimicrobial Resistance of Enterobacteriaceae in Bloodstream Infections in Hospitalized Patients in Southern Poland

Marta Klos, Estera Jachowicz, Monika Pomorska-Wesolowska, Dorota Romaniszyn, Grzegorz Kandzierski, Jadwiga Wojkowska-Mach

Summary: This study highlights the antimicrobial resistance among Enterobacteriaceae isolated from bloodstream infections in hospitals in southern Poland. The predominant pathogen identified was Escherichia coli in internal medicine and surgery units, while Klebsiella pneumoniae was more frequently isolated in intensive care units. Enterobacteriaceae demonstrated high resistance to most antimicrobial agents.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare workers before and after vaccination with mRNA preparations. The results showed that vaccinated healthcare workers had almost 100 times higher antibody levels than the unvaccinated workers. Participants under 30 years of age had significantly higher antibody levels compared to older workers.

Colonization and Healthcare-Associated Infection of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae, Data from Polish Hospital with High Incidence of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae, Does Active Target Screening Matter?

Iwona Pawlowska, Grzegorz Ziolkowski, Estera Jachowicz-Matczak, Michal Stasiowski, Mateusz Gajda, Jadwiga Wojkowska-Mach

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the incidence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) at a provincial hospital from 2019-2021. Multiplex PCR was used to detect carbapenemase genes. A total of 399 cases of CRE were detected, including 104 healthcare-associated infections. The most frequently present genes among the identified CRE strains were the ones mediating oxacillinase OXA-48 (71%) and KPC (26%), while New Delhi NDM metallo-beta-lactamase genes were less common (2.5%). Two isolates produced both OXA-48 and KPC carbapenemases. The study highlights the need for continuous monitoring and prevention measures to control the spread of CRE strains in hospitals.

Oral Myco- and Bacteriobiota and Yeast Infections in Mechanically Ventilated COVID-19 Patients

Iwona Gregorczyk-Maga, Michal Kania, Beata Sulik-Tyszka, Magdalena Namysl, Anna Sepiolo, Dorota Romaniszyn, Estera Jachowicz-Matczak, Jadwiga Wojkowska-Mach

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk of invasive candidiasis in critically ill COVID-19 patients on mechanical ventilation in the ICU. The study found that nearly half of the patients had non-albicans Candida species in their oral samples, indicating impaired oral health. The incidence of yeast infections, including invasive cases, was high in these patients, possibly due to the severity of COVID-19 and specific interventions in the ICU.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the morbidity of CAPA among ICU patients in Poland and analyze the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The study found an incidence rate of 1% and a fatality rate of 76.5% for CAPA. It highlights the importance of increased awareness among medical staff regarding fungal co-infections in ICU patients with COVID-19 and the need for more effective use of available diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
