Summary: We developed a strategy for the enzymatic synthesis of 1-deoxy and 1,2-deoxyketoses using transketolase variants from Geobacillus stearothermophilus. The best combinations of substrates were selected and applied to the preparative scale synthesis, resulting in good to excellent isolated yields. In addition, we demonstrated a one-pot one step procedure using a d-amino acid oxidase and the best transketolase variant, achieving good yields of the desired ketoses.

Summary: In this study, a bacteriophage GR1 infecting G. stearothermophilus was isolated and its endolysin LysGR1 was characterized. LysGR1 showed lytic activity against various bacteria and effectively removed G. stearothermophilus biofilms. These findings suggest that LysGR1 could be a promising biocontrol agent against G. stearothermophilus and foodborne pathogens.

Summary: This study reveals the function of methionine-rich regions in copper detoxification process of bacterial Cuproxidases, which can bind toxic Cu(I) ions. The results demonstrate that the length of these methionine-rich loops and the number of Cu(I) ligands in these loops are proportional to the bound Cu(I) ions.

Summary: In this study, a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae Mk-1 that can effectively degrade polyethylene (PE) was obtained from the soil. The key gene of PE degradation in the strain was found to be a laccase-like multi-copper oxidase gene. The gene was successfully expressed in E.coli and showed laccase activity, indicating its potential for PE degradation. This study provides new resources for the biodegradation of PE.

Summary: In this study, a lignocellulolytic Bacillus stratosphericus strain BCMC2 was isolated from the hindgut of fungus-growing termite Macrotermes barneyi, and the laccase gene (BaCotA) was cloned and overexpressed with high specific activity and thermal stability. BaCotA showed resistance to alkaline conditions and organic solvents, as well as efficient decolorization ability towards dyes, indicating its potential for industrial applications. This study highlights the termite intestine as a valuable resource for discovering new strains or enzymes.

Summary: A self-powered electrochemical biosensor (SPEB) based on in situ growth of enzyme/copper phosphate on carbon cloth was developed, which exhibits higher power density, a wider linear detection range, and lower detection limit. This is attributed to the unique three-dimensional flower structure of enzyme/copper phosphate hybrid, providing more exposure to the active site of the enzyme. The synergistic effect between the enzyme and Cu-3(PO4)(2) enhances the catalytic activity and stability of the enzyme, improving the performance of SPEB. It is expected to be applied to glucose detection.

Summary: Doping is a feasible strategy to enhance the carrier density and charge mobility of intrinsic organic semiconductors. A structurally simple dithieno-pyrrole-based molecular semiconductor is synthesized and doped with a thermally stable acid salt. This doped composite exhibits high hole density, mobility, and electrical conductivity, as well as low gas permeation coefficients, enabling the fabrication of efficient perovskite solar cells.

Summary: The study found that irrigation with biologically treated wastewater significantly increased growth and yield of pea plants, while untreated wastewater led to stunted plant growth. Application of wastewater may cause soil alkalinization and limit nutrient absorption. Therefore, wastewater should be biologically treated or diluted before application to maintain soil nutrient levels.
