Summary: This study investigated the protective role of selenium (Se) against inorganic mercury (iHg) toxicity in PC12 cells. Results showed that Se co-treatment inhibited intrinsic apoptosis and oxidative stress induced by iHg through various mechanisms, suggesting that excessive ROS generation plays a critical role in iHg-induced oxidative stress and Se has potential in attenuating iHg cytotoxicity via its antioxidant properties.

Summary: The highly toxic environmental pollutant cadmium (Cd) can lead to the occurrence and development of multiple neurological diseases. Gamma-glutamylcysteine (gamma-GC) has been found to inhibit Cd-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells by reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting the activation of MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. This suggests that gamma-GC could potentially be used as a protective agent against Cd neurotoxicity.

Summary: Ferulic acid has antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects in PC12 cells, protecting neurons from damage by inhibiting apoptosis and reducing reactive oxygen species production. It regulates protein phosphorylation, apoptosis-related proteins, and microRNA expression to mitigate oxidative stress induced by H2O2 in rat pheochromocytoma cells.

Summary: Traditional Chinese medicines with hyperoside such as Acanthopanax senticosus and Crataegus pinnatifida have demonstrated anti-oxidative stress properties. Hyperoside, the main component of antioxidant herbs, may delay the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. This study investigated the therapeutic mechanism of hyperoside as a natural antioxidant against Alzheimer's disease in Caenorhabditis elegans and PC12 cells, showing its ability to reduce reactive oxygen species levels and neurotoxicity induced by A beta 42.

Summary: Arsenic is a naturally occurring metalloid that can cause acute and chronic toxicity in humans. Neurotoxicity is a serious manifestation of arsenic toxicity. This study found that minocycline, an antimicrobial agent with antioxidant properties and the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, can significantly attenuate arsenic-induced neurotoxicity by reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis. These findings suggest that minocycline could be a promising treatment for arsenic toxicity.

Summary: This study found that exposure to manganese sulfate (MnSO4) can affect neurological effects in PC12 cells through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, leading to decreased antioxidant enzyme activity and increased cell apoptosis. Additionally, the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway plays a crucial role in mediating manganese-induced neurotoxicity.

Summary: The fermented tofu by Actinomucor elegans showed higher phenolic content and antioxidant activity, and provided neuroprotective effects on hypoxia-injured PC12 cells. It reduced cell death, inhibited oxidative stress, regulated apoptosis-related proteins, and modulated cell cycle proteins to enhance cell survival. Additionally, the fermented tofu activated autophagy as a potential mechanism for cell protection against hypoxic damage.

Summary: The characteristics of Alzheimer's disease include irreversible memory loss and progressive cognitive decline. Oxidative stress is considered to be a significant factor contributing to brain diseases such as Alzheimer's. Chinese herbal medicine, specifically Moschus, has antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects and has been used for treating various brain-related conditions. This study aims to evaluate the potential neuroprotective effects of Moschus on hydrogen peroxide-induced cellular injury.
