A heuristic for clustering and picking small items considering safe reach of the order picker

The paper presents a heuristic for clustering and picking small items in a man-aboard order picking system. The proposed heuristic clusters items such that the size of the cluster is bounded by the shape and dimensions of the work envelop of the picker. Where, the picking work envelop is determined considering maximum safe reach as a function of the anthropometric measures of the order picker. This allows the picker to safely pick more items per stop of the order picking platform. Moreover and to minimise total tour time, simulated annealing is used to solve the resulting travel salesperson problem. The proposed heuristic is tested on various order picking scenarios of small items. Analytical results show improvement in the cycle time of the order picking system compared to that obtained using heuristics from literature.

Optimization of maintenance tasks of spatially distributed assets with non-preemptive overtime

Summary: This study presents a MILP model to find the optimal solution for minimizing labor, transportation, and overtime costs in maintenance scheduling. The model is formulated and solved using AMPL and CPLEX, and its feasibility is tested and validated through case studies. Evaluation of gauges in measurement systems

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the actual process capability index (AC(p)) and the observed process capability index (OCp) through the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to assess the measurement system. The analysis presents the probability distributions of ACp and OCp as a function of SNR and establishes benchmark values for SNR to determine the precision of the measurement gauge. Two case studies are used to validate the analysis, indicating that the observed capability is consistently lower than the actual capability due to skewness in the distribution of the observed index.
