Summary: This study found that children with early childhood caries were more likely to have iron deficiency, but there was no statistically significant association between serum ferritin levels and caries. Additionally, children with caries were more likely to have iron-deficiency anemia and anemia, with lower levels of hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume compared to the caries-free group.

Summary: The study shows that antepartum intravenous iron sucrose infusion effectively increases hemoglobin levels from the third trimester to delivery, with the best results seen when administered 2-12 weeks before delivery. Early administration and increasing number of doses both have a positive impact on treatment outcomes.

Summary: A study conducted on healthy full-term infants showed that iron fortification at 2 mg/L is sufficient during the first half of infancy in a well-nourished population. Adding lactoferrin to infant formula does not have an impact on iron status.

Summary: Establishing reference ranges for complete blood count (CBC), reticulocyte hemoglobin content (Ret-He), immature reticulocyte fraction (IRF), and reticulocyte production index (RPI) is important for diagnosing diseases related to changes in erythrocyte indices, white blood cell count, platelets, and reticulocytes, especially in infants. This study aimed to establish reference ranges for CBC and reticulocyte parameters in healthy babies aged 1-4 months. The study included 348 babies, with 89 at 1 month, 87 at 2 months, 86 at 3 months, and 86 at 4 months. Reference ranges for hemoglobin (Hb) were determined for each age group. The study also defined reference ranges for CBC, Ret-He, IRF, and RPI in healthy babies aged 1-4 months.

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of anaemia among children aged 6-24 months in Burundi, with factors such as lack of deworming medication, presence of malaria, home location, and age group significantly associated with higher odds of anaemia. Policy makers should focus on improving deworming and malaria prevention programs, promoting preventive interventions, and improving women's education level to prevent the adverse outcomes of anaemia in children.

Summary: Both iron-deficiency anemia and non-iron-deficiency anemia were found to have negative correlations with children's neurobehavioral development. Iron-deficiency anemia was negatively correlated with gross motor and adaptability development, while non-iron-deficiency anemia was negatively correlated with gross motor and fine movement development.

Summary: The study found that providing fortified complementary foods to children aged 6-23 months can help prevent anemia in malaria-endemic regions, but the effects on height and weight are not significant.

Summary: Antenatal multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) are more effective than iron and folic acid (IFA) supplements in reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes. MMS can also effectively prevent anemia, especially in areas with low daily iron intake and high anemia prevalence.

Summary: The role of iron in neurodevelopment and the adverse effects of early-life iron deficiency on brain development and function have been extensively studied. Recent research has highlighted the importance of maternal preconceptional iron status and fetal iron accretion in determining offspring's iron status and brain health throughout life. This paradigm shift in thinking has linked previously separate literatures on neonatal and postnatal iron deficiency. Understanding the impact of fetal iron accretion on postnatal iron balance has emphasized the need for proper fetal iron loading. This article reviews fetal iron metabolism, the role of iron in fetal brain development, the neurobehavioral consequences of fetal iron underloading, and the potential mechanisms underlying the long-term effects of fetal/neonatal iron deficiency.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of anemia in tuberculosis patients in Brazil and its association with patient characteristics. The results showed that anemia was present in 61.2% of the 258 cases, predominantly as normochromic normocytic anemia. Anemia was associated with factors such as a history of weight loss, hospitalizations, coinfection with HIV, increased platelet count, and microcytosis, suggesting it could be a biomarker of tuberculosis severity.

Summary: This study compared the accuracy and trend of a non-invasive transcutaneous spectrophotometric estimation of arterial hemoglobin concentration to the invasive blood Hb concentration in children. The results showed a good correlation between the two methods, indicating that non-invasive Hb measurement is useful for estimating Hb in children and can serve as a screening tool for anemia.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a machine learning model to evaluate the risk of newly onset iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in premenopausal women 12 months after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). A linear support vector machine model was developed using preoperative ferritin, age, hemoglobin, creatinine, and fasting C-peptide as important features. The model showed moderate discrimination and clinical benefits in predicting IDA in Chinese premenopausal women with obesity after SG.
