Occupational exposure to antimony has gained much interest when specific toxic effects were noticed among workers processing antimony. Thus, the aim of the present work was to investigate the potential DNA oxidative damage occurring among Egyptian workers occupationally exposed to antimony trioxide. The study was conducted on 25 subjects exposed to antimony trioxide while working in the polymerization process of polyester in Misrayon and Polyester Fiber Company, KafrEldawwar, Beheira, Egypt. Urinary antimony levels were assessed using inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and considered as a biological exposure index. DNA damage and total oxidant capacity (TOC) were assessed using ELISA. DNA damage was detected in the form of increased apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites among antimony trioxide-exposed workers compared to control subjects, but it could not be explained by oxidative mechanisms due to lack of significant correlation between DNA damage and measured TOC. Antimony trioxide might have a genotoxic impact on occupationally exposed workers which could not be attributed to oxidative stress in the studied cases.

Coronal and sagittal suture lengths as novel measurements for sex identification in a sample from the Egyptian population

Zahraa Khalifa Sobh, Ashraf Magdy Gheat

Summary: Sex can be estimated accurately using the lengths of the coronal and sagittal sutures, with males having significantly longer average lengths compared to females. The combination of these measurements provides the best discrimination of sex, while also being cost-effective and easily applicable in conventional autopsies.

Exploring research gaps and trends in the management of acute phosphide poisoning: a systematic review

Zahraa Khalifa Sobh, Marwa Kholief, Eman Khalifa Sobh, Manal Ibrahim Fathy Balah

Summary: Metal phosphides are highly toxic pesticides that cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. This systematic review included 350 studies and found an increasing trend in cases of acute aluminum phosphide (AlP) and zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) poisoning, indicating a growing number of affected patients. AlP poisoning studies accounted for a large proportion of the included research and high mortality rates have fueled research interest in this area. Various therapeutic modalities have been explored, showing promising results in reducing mortality, but further meta-analyses are needed to establish their effectiveness. The article also highlights the need for an effective antidote and standardized protocol for managing acute AlP poisoning.

The therapeutic benefit of antioxidants on the outcome of acute aluminum phosphide poisoning: a systemic review and meta-analysis

Zahraa K. Sobh, Asmaa Abd-Elhameed

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effect of antioxidants on the outcome of acute aluminum phosphide poisoning. The results show that antioxidants significantly decrease mortality and the need for intubation and mechanical ventilation. N-Acetyl cysteine and vitamin E were particularly effective in reducing mortality. However, further trials and analyses are recommended to ensure the reliability of these findings.
