To move toward environmentally sustainable transport systems, electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly seen as-viable alternatives to internal combustion vehicles (ICVs). To ensure effectiveness of such deployment, holistic assessments of environmental impacts can help decision-makers determine optimized urban strategies in a long-term perspective. However, explicit guidance and conduct of such assessments are currently missing. Here, we therefore propose a framework using life cycle assessment that enables the quantification of environmental impacts of a transport system at full urban scale from a fleet-based, foresight perspective. The analysis of the passenger car fleet development in the city of Copenhagen for the years 2016-2030 is used as a proof-of concept. We modeled- and compared five powertrain technologies, and we assessed four fleet-based scenarios for the entire city. Our results showed relative environmental benefits from range-extended and fuel-cell EVs over ICVs and standard EVs. These results were found to be sensitive to local settings, like electricity grid mix, which could alter the relative environmental performances across EV technologies. The comprehensive framework developed here can be applied to other geographic areas and contexts to assess the environmental sustainability of transport systems.

Environmental sustainability of future aquaculture production: Analysis of Singaporean and Norwegian policies

Florence Alexia Bohnes, Michael Zwicky Hauschild, Jorgen Schlundt, Max Nielsen, Alexis Laurent

Summary: The study proposes a framework to assess the national environmental impacts from aquaculture industries, highlighting the importance of feed production and usage on the environment, while also pointing out that governmental policies may not directly reduce greenhouse gases emissions. It calls for the expansion of the framework to cover the entire food system and recommends its interim application to support decision-making and move towards more environmentally sustainable aquaculture systems.

Identification of dissipative emissions for improved assessment of metal resources in life cycle assessment

Mikolaj Owsianiak, Lauran van Oers, Johannes Drielsma, Alexis Laurent, Michael Z. Hauschild

Summary: Environmental dissipation is a novel approach to account for impacts from mineral resources, focusing on emissions to the environment. It is important to differentiate truly dissipative emissions from anthropogenic releases that do not contribute to loss of accessibility of a given resource over time. This differentiation is crucial in metal resource impact assessment to highlight the need for considering dissipative emissions separately.

Combined energetic, economic and climate change assessment of heat pumps for industrial waste heat recovery

Yoann Jovet, Frederic Lefevre, Alexis Laurent, Marc Clausse

Summary: The recovery of waste heat can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in industrial sectors. A new methodology is developed in this study to determine the minimum conditions for waste heat recovery solutions to comply with the targets of the Paris Agreement. The study focuses on mechanical heat pump solutions (MHPs) in 24 EU countries and finds that all countries are compliant in 2050 for MHP integration with low temperature lift and 21 countries are compliant for high temperature lift. The main barriers to the development of MHP technology in 2030 are economic, while in 2050, countries that do not reach the reduction targets face a high carbon intensity of electricity generation.

Consumption-based screening of climate change footprints for cities worldwide

Pernille K. Ohms, Alexis Laurent, Michael Z. Hauschild, Morten W. Ryberg

Summary: With increasing urbanization, cities play a significant role in global greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, it is important to develop tools to help local governments measure and monitor the consumption-based climate change footprint of cities. This study introduces a parsimonious screening tool that uses easily accessible city data and multiple regression models. The findings show that only a few cities are on track to achieve the necessary levels for greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, highlighting the need for major actions in cities worldwide to mitigate climate change.

Risk of plastics losses to the environment from Indian landfills

Vinay Yadav, M. A. Sherly, Pallav Ranjan, Vindhyawasini Prasad, Rafael O. Tinoco, Alexis Laurent

Summary: 45% of global environmental losses of plastics come from mismanaged landfills and open dumps in Asia, causing significant impacts on ecosystems, human health, and the economy. A novel framework was developed to assess the risk levels of urban centers in India, revealing that 11% of these cities have severe and very high risks, such as Mumbai and Delhi.

Advancing water footprint assessments: Combining the impacts of water pollution and scarcity

Eleonore Pierrat, Alexis Laurent, Martin Dorber, Martin Rygaard, Francesca Verones, Michael Hauschild

Summary: Several water footprint indicators have been developed to address the issues of freshwater stress. Volumetric footprints focus on water allocation and productivity, while impact-oriented footprints aim to minimize the negative effects of water use on human health, ecosystems, and freshwater resources. However, challenges in combining these perspectives remain, such as pollution and ecosystem impact modeling. To bridge these gaps, a water footprint assessment framework is proposed, incorporating regionalized indicators for water biodiversity and water resource, and complemented with a sustainability assessment. The framework is tested on the water use sustainability in the European Union, revealing the need for concerted efforts in reducing the impacts of emissions and water consumption.

Multicompartment Depletion Factors for Water Consumption on a Global Scale

Martin Dorber, Inge de Graaf, Alexis Laurent, Michael Z. Hauschild, Martin Rygaard, Valerio Barbarossa, Eleonore Pierrat

Summary: Balancing the need for freshwater between human communities and ecosystems is a significant challenge in the 21st century due to population growth and improved living conditions. A global operational method to evaluate the consequences of freshwater consumption and its interdependence on different water compartments is currently missing. This study developed depletion factors to quantify the effects of water consumption on various hydrological variables globally, providing valuable insights into the ecological impacts of water consumption. These depletion factors can be integrated into sustainability assessment tools to guide sustainable water management strategies.

Hendrik Christiaan Oosterhoff, Laura Golsteijn, Alexis Laurent, Morten Walbech Ryberg

Summary: The planetary boundaries define a safe operating space for humanity. However, current methods for assessing environmental sustainability are more suitable for business-to-consumer industries, making it difficult to evaluate business-to-business industries. This study presents a systematic framework that can be applied to both B2C and B2B industries.

National SDG-7 performance assessment to support achieving sustainable energy for all within planetary limits

C. H. Gebara, A. Laurent

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive framework to assess national performances in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 using 29 indicators. Results show variations in performances across countries and trade-offs between social and environmental indicators. All countries demonstrate unsustainable performances in multiple indicators, with some environmental scores just above the threshold and others exceeding it by more than a factor of 1000. Hence, it is recommended that policy-makers widely adopt this framework to achieve sustainable development goals.
