Bioremediation of vinyl chloride (VC) contamination in groundwater could be mediated by three major bacterial guilds: anaerobic VC-dechlorinators, methanotrophs, and ethene-oxidizing bacteria (etheneotrophs) via metabolic or cometabolic pathways. We collected 95 groundwater samples across 6 chlorinated ethene-contaminated sites and searched for relationships among VC biodegradation gene abundance and expression and site geochemical parameters (e.g., VC concentrations). Functional genes from the three major VC degrading bacterial guilds were present in 99% and expressed in 59% of the samples. Etheneotroph and methanotroph functional gene abundances ranged from 102 to 109 genes per liter of groundwater among the samples with VC reductive dehalogenase gene (bvcA and vcrA) abundances reaching 108 genes per liter of groundwater. Etheneotroph functional genes (etnC and etnE) and VC reductive dehalogenase genes (bvcA and vcrA) were strongly related to VC concentrations (p < 0.001). Methanotroph functional genes (mmoX and pmoA) were not related to VC concentration (p > 0.05). Samples from sites with bulk VC attenuation rates >0.08 year(-1) contained higher levels of etheneotroph and anaerobic VC-dechlorinator functional genes and transcripts than those with bulk VC attenuation rates <0.004 year We conclude that both etheneotrophs and anaerobic VC-dechlorinators have the potential to simultaneously contribute to VC biodegradation at these sites.

Volume of hippocampus-amygdala transition area predicts outcomes of electroconvulsive therapy in major depressive disorder: high accuracy validated in two independent cohorts

Jinping Xu, Wenfei Li, Tongjian Bai, Jiaying Li, Jinhuan Zhang, Qingmao Hu, Jiaojian Wang, Yanghua Tian, Kai Wang

Summary: This study found that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can selectively induce structural plasticity of the amygdala and hippocampal sub-regions in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and these changes are associated with the antidepressant effects of ECT. Additionally, the volume of the hippocampus-amygdala transition area (HATA) can serve as a potential biomarker to predict the effectiveness of ECT.

Invariant aluminum CHF under electron beam irradiation conditions for downward-facing flow boiling

Kai Wang, Inoue Junya, Chun -Yen Li, Songbai Cheng, Koji Okamoto

Summary: The effects of electron beam irradiation on critical heat flux (CHF) of aluminum surfaces in downward-facing saturated flow boiling were investigated. It was found that although the contact angle decreased greatly after irradiation, no obvious CHF and heat transfer coefficient change was observed up to a total dose of 3000 kGy. The bubble coverage was calculated and believed to be strongly associated with boiling crisis. The insensitivity of CHF in aluminum may be related to easy oxidation on the aluminum surface. This finding may be helpful for future heat transfer design and anti-accident counter-measurements in radiation environments.

Dynamic Changes of Brain Activity in Different Responsive Groups of Patients with Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness

Chen Chen, Jinying Han, Shuang Zheng, Xintong Zhang, Haibo Sun, Ting Zhou, Shunyin Hu, Xiaoxiang Yan, Changqing Wang, Kai Wang, Yajuan Hu

Summary: Changes in resting-state EEG microstate parameters were observed in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) after high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), indicating an improvement in consciousness. Specifically, the duration and coverage of class C microstates significantly increased in the responsive group (RE), while these changes have not been reported in the non-responsive group (N-RE). Our findings suggest that EEG neural signatures can be used to assess consciousness states, and that improvement in brain activity dynamics is associated with the recovery of DOCs.

Oxytocin-Receptor Gene Modulates Reward-Network Connection and Relationship with Empathy Performance

Dandan Li, Long Zhang, Tongjian Bai, Bensheng Qiu, Chunyan Zhu, Kai Wang

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the modulatory effect of common variations in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) on reward circuitry function and its relationship with empathy. Using functional connectivity and spontaneous local activity analyses in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), the results showed that individuals with the rs2268493 TT genotype had lower functional connectivity between the NAcc and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as well as the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). These findings suggest that common OXTR variations have a modulatory effect on the connection between the NAcc and the central hubs of empathic networks, providing insights into the neural basis of the modulatory effect of OXTR on empathic behavior.

Zhenyu Wu, Kang Wang, Lin Shi, Xiaoying Cheng, Yanhong Yuan

Summary: In this paper, the impact resistance and damage tolerance of triaxial braid structure laminates at different positions were studied. Results showed that the triaxial braided fabric with quasi-isotropic properties on the impact side caused more significant matrix cracks and larger damage areas. The study provided valuable reference for failure analysis and structure optimization of composite laminates.

Pressure/Thermo-Induced Hypsochromic-Shifted and Enhanced Luminescence Based on Carbazole Emitter

Jun-Cheng Yang, Zhiyuan Fu, Huili Ma, Tao Wang, Kai Wang, Lin Wu, Ben Zhong Tang, Hai-Tao Feng, Pu Chen, Qiuying Li

Summary: This study focuses on the stimuli-responsive luminescence of a novel emitter, DCzPy, which emits bluegreen fluorescence in crystal form. Upon gentle grinding, the fluorescence intensity of DCzPy is significantly enhanced with a hypsochromic shift. The emission wavelength returns to its original value after heavy grinding. Moreover, DCzPy exhibits a large bathochromic-shifted and weakened fluorescence under isotropic compression. In film form, the thermoresponsive behavior of DCzPy changes the emission from green to blue. Based on this thermo-induced fluorescence switching, a two-dimensional code for information anticounterfeiting is successfully fabricated.

Summary: A novel emitter (DCzPy) was synthesized and its stimuli-responsive luminescence was studied. The emitter showed bluegreen fluorescence in the crystalline state, with dramatically enhanced and hypsochromic-shifted fluorescence upon gentle grinding. The emission wavelength returned to the original state after further heavy grinding. Under isotropic compression, the emitter exhibited a large bathochromic-shifted and weakened fluorescence. In addition, in the film state, the emission color of the emitter changed from green to blue as the temperature increased.

Piezochromic fluorescence of anthracene derivative crystals with different stacking patterns designed around excimers

Yuxiang Dai, Haichao Liu, Ting Geng, Ruijie Duan, Xiaoming Li, Yongli Liu, Wengang Liu, Ben-Guo He, Laizhi Sui, Kai Wang, Bo Zou, Bing Yang, Yang Qi

Summary: The wide application of excimer materials in the OLED field is mainly driven by the regulation of their stacking structure. This study designed three anthracene derivative molecules with sterically hindered substituents and prepared crystals with different aggregating structures to investigate the relationship between their structures and properties. The study found that under high pressures, these anthracene groups exhibit enhanced fluorescence during the formation of excimers, while the ones that have already formed excimers under ambient conditions show a wider red-shift range. The piezochromic fluorescence behavior observed indicates that regulating the aggregation mode of anthracene groups can meet different application requirements and guide the expansion of excimer materials' usage.
