The objective of this study is to analyze the CO2 emissions and economic impacts of the implementation of the National Efficient Cooking Program (NECP) in Ecuador, which aims to migrate the population from Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-based stoves to electric induction stoves. This program is rooted in the current effort to change Ecuador's energy balance, with hydroelectric power expected to generate 83.61% of national electricity by 2022, ending the need for subsidized LPG. For this analysis, the 2014 baseline situation has been compared with two future scenarios for 2022: a business-as-usual scenario and an NECP-success scenario. This study demonstrates the viability of migration from imported fossil fuels to locally-produced renewable energy as the basis for an efficient cooking facility. The new policies scenario would save US$ 1.162 billion in annual government expenditure on cooking subsidies, and reducing CO2 emissions associated to energy for cooking in 1.8 tCO(2)/Y.

Measurements and numerical calculations of thermal conductivity to evaluate the quality of β-gallium oxide thin films grown on sapphire and silicon carbide by molecular beam epitaxy

Diego Vaca, Matthew Barry, Luke Yates, Neeraj Nepal, D. Scott Katzer, Brian P. Downey, Virginia Wheeler, Luke Nyakiti, David J. Meyer, Samuel Graham, Satish Kumar

Summary: In this study, we investigate the lower thermal conductivity of beta-Ga2O3 thin films grown by MBE. We compare experimental results with numerical predictions and find that the presence of boundary scattering and defects significantly affect the thermal conductivity of the thin films. By considering various types of defects in the calculations, we identify that crystals with gallium vacancies and stacking faults exhibit thermal conductivities closer to the experimental values. These findings provide insights for improving the thermal conductivity of MBE-grown samples.

Energy Transition Scenarios for Fossil Fuel Rich Developing Countries under Constraints on Oil Availability: The Case of Ecuador

Vicente Sebastian Espinoza, Javier Fontalvo, Paola Ramirez, Jaime Marti-Herrero, Margarita Mediavilla

Summary: This paper aims to analyze the energy transition pathway for a fossil fuel rich developing country, taking into consideration national and international oil availability. The results indicate that without taking action, energy scarcity is inevitable by 2040, leading to economic decline. However, the increasing use of fossil fuels can be partially reduced through policies promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy. Nonetheless, it is crucial to implement ambitious policies in the short term to mitigate the effects of replacing oil as an energy and income source.

Analysis of energy future pathways for Ecuador facing the prospects of oil availability using a system dynamics model. Is degrowth inevitable?

Vicente Sebastian Espinoza, Javier Fontalvo, Jaime Marti-Herrero, Luis Javier Miguel, Margarita Mediavilla

Summary: The aim of this paper is to develop a system dynamics model to assess the energy future up to 2050 for Ecuador considering its condition of oil producing country. Three scenarios have been developed with different assumptions regarding national and global oil availability under a Business-As-Usual narrative. The study finds that restricted availability of oil might significantly pressure final demand, leading to a downfall in economic activity.

Multicriteria Decision Analysis of Suitable Location for Wind and Photovoltaic Power Plants on the Galapagos Islands

Geovanna Villacreses, Diego Jijon, Juan Francisco Nicolalde, Javier Martinez-Gomez, Franz Betancourt

Summary: The Galapagos Islands have been declared a World Heritage site due to their unique biodiversity. However, their dependence on fossil fuel energies has led to harmful air quality, impacting the flora and fauna. To protect the islands, zero-carbon initiatives such as solar and wind power plants have been studied as alternatives. By using Geographical Information Systems and decision methods, potential locations for these energy sources were identified, with Baltra Island being the best location for wind power plants.

C. Tavera-Ruiz, J. Marti-Herrero, O. Mendieta, J. Jaimes-Estevez, P. Gauthier-Maradei, U. Azimov, H. Escalante, L. Castro

Summary: This research focuses on the development of biogas sector in Colombia, a developing country. The study finds that Colombian research mostly concentrates on agricultural waste substrates, inocula, and co-digestion, while full-scale digesters' performance research is lacking. A survey reveals that 79% of the installed digesters in Colombia are psychrophilic low-cost tubular digesters. The existing regulations for biogas in Colombia are not suitable for low-cost digesters and are borrowed from developed countries, disregarding the national context. The research presents five case studies analyzing the barriers and opportunities for AD technology, driven slowly by national networks comprising farmers, NGOs, and academia.

Moving Beyond Clean Cooking Energy adoption: Using Indian ACCESS panel data to understand solid fuel suspension

Dawit Guta, Hisham Zerriffi, Jill Baumgartner, Abhishek Jain, Sunil Mani, Darby Jack, Ellison Carter, Guofeng Shen, Jennifer Orgill-Meyer, Joshua Rosenthal, Katherine Dickinson, Rob Bailis, Yuta Masuda

Summary: Household solid fuel use is detrimental to health and the environment. The Indian government's PMUY subsidy has successfully promoted the adoption of LPG by millions of households. However, there is limited understanding of the decision-making process to reduce solid fuel use after transitioning to cleaner fuels. This study found that factors such as household wealth, social status, education level, and the prevalence of LPG use in the village are positively associated with LPG consumption and the discontinuation of solid fuel use. On the other hand, factors such as distance to LPG refill delivery, household size, and the PMUY subsidy are negatively associated with the share of LPG use.

How to finance green investments? The role of public debt

Jaroslaw Kantorowicz, Marion Collewet, Matthew DiGiuseppe, Hendrik Vrijburg

Summary: Economic costs are a major political obstacle to investing in climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. The method of financing plays a crucial role in determining public opposition to government green investments, with debt financing being less opposed than broad-based taxes. This study suggests that credit market tools, such as green bonds and debt for climate swaps, can be politically efficient in increasing support for green financing. Carbon taxes and wealth taxes are found to be the most preferred options.

Energy trade stability of China: Policy options with increasing climate risks

Kun Guo, Liyuan Luan, Xiaoli Cai, Dayong Zhang, Qiang Ji

Summary: This paper investigates China's energy trade stability using a survival analysis approach. It finds that the energy trade linkages between China and 153 other countries are complex and unstable, with short periods of trade with many countries. Geopolitically risky regions, such as the Middle East and Africa, have the lowest trade stability. Climate risks have significant effects on energy trade stability. The paper proposes several policy options to improve energy trade stability in China, with special attention to increasing global climate risks.

Summary: This study estimates the willingness to pay of Indian urban consumers for a continuous supply of electricity using contingent valuation method. The findings show that the amount consumers are willing to pay depends on the duration of power outages, with households preferring shorter outages. Summary: The Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is considered an innovative technology for building a green society. This study investigates the impact of REC purchases on stock return and volume in Taiwan between 2017 and 2021. The findings suggest that REC purchases have a positive effect on stock returns of manufacturing firms but not service firms. The frequency of REC purchases is also an important factor in the relationship between REC purchase and firm value.
