Stringent specifications for sulfur compounds content and the need to use oils with large amount of nitrogen compounds are challenges for fuel producers. Adsorption is an alternative process to remove sulfur and nitrogen compounds and clays are promising adsorbents for this removal. In this work, the adsorption performance of different commercial clays Clay A (attapulgite), Clay B (bentonite), and Clay C (bentonite) for the removal of sulfur and nitrogen compounds from a real diesel stream was studied through kinetic and isothermal experiments. The bentonite clays showed the best adsorptive capacity for the removal of sulfur and nitrogen compounds, probably due to the presence of Bromisted acid sites. The highest adsorption capacity was observed for Clay B: 0.174 mol kg(-1) for sulfur compounds and 0.127 mol kg(-1) for nitrogen compounds. Clay A was more selective to the removal of nitrogen compounds. Equilibrium data showed that adsorbate-absorba.te and adsorbate-surface interactions predominate for sulfur and nitrogen compounds, respectively, for Clay A and Clay B.

Investigation of biomass waste biochar production to act as matrix for urea

Luana Baia, Aderval S. Luna, Juliana P. Sa Leitao, Wallace Carvalho de Souza, Marco A. G. Figueiredo, Ana P. Carvalho

Summary: This study investigated the synthesis of biochar from various biomass wastes as a matrix for urea. The aim was to identify the most promising synthesis condition for biochar that retains and releases urea at a slow rate, as well as to understand the interaction between urea and biochar. The results indicated that the interaction between urea and biochar is chemical in nature, with a lower presence of mineral elements and an acidic surface favoring urea retention.

Advantages of treating sponge-gourd waste by mechanical refining on the properties of fiber-based poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/polylactide biocomposites

Summary: This study compares the morphology, thermal, and dynamic-mechanical properties of composites based on polybutylene adipate terephthalate/polylactide biocomposites. The results show that the thermal stability of the composites decreases as the sponge gourd content increases. The biocomposite with 10%wt/wt R fiber has the highest storage modulus value.
