The emerging concept of smart manufacturing systems is defined in part by the introduction of new technologies that are promoting rapid and widespread information flow within the manufacturing system and surrounding its control. These systems can deliver unprecedented awareness, agility, productivity, and resilience within the production process by exploiting the ever-increasing availability of real-time manufacturing data. Optimized collection and analysis of this voluminous data to guide decision-making is, however, a complex and dynamic process. To establish and maintain confidence that smart manufacturing systems function as intended, performance assurance measures will be vital. The activities for performance assurance span manufacturing system design, operation, performance assessment, evaluation, analysis, decision making, and control. Changes may be needed for traditional approaches in these activities to address smart manufacturing systems. This paper reviews the current methods and tools used for establishing and maintaining required system performance. It then identifies trends in data and information systems, integration, performance measurement, analysis, and performance improvement that will be vital for assured performance of smart manufacturing systems. Finally, we analyze how those trends apply to the methods studied and propose future research for assessing and improving manufacturing performance in the uncertain, multi-objective operating environment.

Faster temperature prediction in the powder bed fusion process through the development of a surrogate model

Hemnath Anandan Kumar, Senthilkumaran Kumaraguru, C. P. Paul, K. S. Bindra

Summary: This study introduces a data-driven approach to address the issue of increased computational time in predicting thermal fields in metal Additive Manufacturing processes. A surrogate model based on Gaussian Process Regression was developed to reduce computational costs and efficiently predict thermal fields. Experimental validation showed good agreement between the predictions of the GPR model and measured temperatures.

A view similarity-based shape complexity metric to guide part selection for additive manufacturing

Jayakrishnan Jayapal, Senthilkumaran Kumaraguru, Sudhir Varadarajan

Summary: This paper proposes a view similarity-based shape complexity metric for guiding part selection for additive manufacturing (AM). The metric can effectively screen a large number of parts and identify the most suitable ones for AM, taking into account subjective/contextual factors. The metric calculates a part's shape complexity based on the similarity of different views of its outer shape and internal cross-sectional geometry. It has been shown to be sensitive to input parameters and thresholds are suggested for optimal results. The proposed metric is effective in initial screening of parts in new product development and for redesign using AM.

Novel process planning approach for support-free additive manufacturing using multi-axis deposition systems

Madhanagopal Manoharan, Senthilkumaran Kumaraguru

Summary: This paper presents an improved convex volume decomposition algorithm for direct energy deposit (DED) systems, which can identify and decompose overhang features in faceted models. It also demonstrates the benefits of this method in improving surface quality by building a test part using a multi-axis DED system.

Influence of process parameters on the catchment efficiency and geometric characteristics in laser metal deposition tracks for building thin-wall parts

Reginald Elvis Peter, Senthilkumaran Kumaraguru

Summary: This study investigates the influence of process parameters on catchment efficiency and geometric characteristics for low energy density inputs in the blown powder Laser Metal Deposition process. The study identifies five significant process parameters and analyzes their impacts on catchment efficiency and geometric characteristics. An analytical model is developed and validated, and a process map is constructed to identify optimal processing conditions for high catchment efficiency and a single continuous track.

Summary: The paper discusses the impact of different volume partitioning strategies on the economics and material efficiency of Hybrid Additive Manufacturing, and through case studies, it was found that the feature-based volume partitioning method is more material efficient and cost-effective than the stock-based near net shaping volume partitioning method in both cases.

Deep Learning Based Thermal Image Processing Approach for Detection of Buried Objects and Mines

C. N. Naga Priya, S. Denis Ashok, Bhanshidar Majhi, K. Senthil Kumaran

Summary: The thermal imaging based mine detection technique is widely used for detecting both metallic and non-metallic land mines in battlefields. Accurate mine detection relies on thermal contrast between soil and mine, affected by factors such as burial depth, soil properties, water content, and time of day. A deep learning region convolution neural network approach has been proposed for identifying buried objects in thermal images, achieving 90% accuracy in predicting their locations. This method can be extended for land mine detection using thermal image processing.
