Pilot Analyses of Interferon Subtype Expression Profiles in Patients with Herpes Zoster or Postherpetic Neuralgia

Yu-Chih Chen, Robert W. Figliozzi, Shaochung V. Hsia

Summary: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a painful neuropathic complication resulting from herpes zoster (HZ), with disrupted immune system signaling and inflammation as potential causes. The study suggests that interferon expression profile (IEP) study could serve as a molecular tool for diagnosing PHN.

Summary: The release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) triggered by DNA virus infection, especially Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 (HSV-1), has been studied. As a key intermediate in the pathway for the production of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) plays a crucial role. The development of a sensitive and specific analytical method for the detection and quantification of GHB is essential for further understanding its involvement in the cellular response to HSV-1 infection.

Establishing a Herpesvirus Quiescent Infection in Differentiated Human Dorsal Root Ganglion Neuronal Cell Line Mediated by Micro-RNA Overexpression

Yu-Chih Chen, Hedong Li, Miguel Martin-Caraballo, Shaochung Victor Hsia

Summary: HSV-1 is a neurotropic pathogen associated with severe encephalitis and other chronic neuropathic complications. It can establish lifelong latency in neurons and reactivate under stressors. MicroRNA may play a role in promoting latency of HSV-1 in human neurons.
