The present short review demonstrates the involvement of sirtuins (SIRTs) in the control of ovarian functions at various regulatory levels. External and endocrine factors can affect female reproduction via SIRTs-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) system, which, via hormones and growth factors, can in turn regulate basic ovarian functions (proliferation, apoptosis, secretory activity of ovarian cells, their response to upstream hormonal regulators, ovarian folliculo- and oogenesis, and fecundity). SIRTs and SIRTs-related signaling molecules and drugs regulating mTOR can be used for characterization, prediction, and regulation of ovarian functions, as well as for diagnostics and treatment of ovarian disorders.

High temperature impairs rabbit viability, feed consumption, growth and fecundity: examination of endocrine mechanisms

A. V. Sirotkin, V. Parkanyi, J. Pivko

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of high ambient temperature on rabbit feed consumption, growth, viability, and fecundity, as well as the morphology and endocrine function of gonadal and adrenal cells. Results showed increased mortality, reduced feed consumption and growth, as well as altered hormone levels in response to high temperature exposure. These changes were attributed to decreased IGF-I and/or progesterone secretion, disruption of ovarian cell nuclei, and impaired ovarian cell response to FSH.

The Influence of Turmeric and Curcumin on Female Reproductive Processes

Alexander Sirotkin

Summary: Curcumin affects female reproductive processes by altering the release and reception of hormones, growth factors, and cytokines, as well as influencing ovarian cell response to these substances and external environmental factors. This suggests its potential for stimulating female reproductive processes and treating various reproductive disorders.

Black Elder and Its Constituents: Molecular Mechanisms of Action Associated with Female Reproduction

Adriana Kolesarova, Simona Baldovska, Ladislav Kohut, Alexander V. Sirotkin

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge on the provenance, properties, physiological and therapeutic actions of elderberry, with a focus on its effects on female reproduction. The available data suggest that elderberry has a stimulating effect on healthy ovarian cells and can reduce the viability and proliferation of ovarian cancer cells. It also affects embryogenesis and the embryonal estradiol-estradiol receptor system. The black elder constituents show potential for improving reproductive processes and treating reproductive disorders in veterinary and human medicine.

Toluene Can Disrupt Rat Ovarian Follicullogenesis and Steroidogenesis and Induce Both Autophagy and Apoptosis

Abdulkarem Alrezaki, Nouf Aldawood, Lamjed Mansour, Mukhtar Ahmed, Alexander V. Sirotkin, Saleh Alwasel, Abdel Halim Harrath

Summary: Toluene has been found to be highly toxic to humans and animals, causing damage to various tissues. However, research on its effects on ovarian function is still limited. A study on female Wistar rats showed that toluene exposure decreased ovarian weight, affected ovarian structure, and increased abnormal follicle growth. Additionally, it raised progesterone and testosterone levels and inhibited the expression of genes involved in granulosa cell proliferation and differentiation. The study also demonstrated that toluene exposure induced apoptosis and autophagy, with different effects at various doses.

Kisspeptin as autocrine/paracrine regulator of human ovarian cell functions: Possible interrelationships with FSH and its receptor

Zuzana Fabova, Barbora Loncova, Milos Mlyncek, Alexander Sirotkin

Summary: The study investigated the role of kisspeptin, FSH, and their receptor in controlling basic human ovarian granulosa cell functions. It found that low dose of KP stimulated cell viability and proliferation, while high dose had the opposite effect. FSH also promoted cell functions, and there was a functional interrelationship between KP and FSH/FSHR.

Impact of COVID-19 on University Activities: Comparison of Experiences from Slovakia and Georgia

Alexander V. Sirotkin, Martina Pavlikova, Lubomir Hlad, Roman Kralik, Irina Zarnadze, Shalva Zarnadze, Lucia Petrikovicova

Summary: This paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international mobility, attractivity for international students, and the number of publications in two universities, CPU in Slovakia and TSMU in Georgia. The study reveals that while COVID-19 had a negative impact on international mobility, the number of international students continued to increase in both universities. The use of home offices during the pandemic had a positive effect on international publications from CPU but not TSMU. After the pandemic, international mobility increased in both universities, but did not fully return to pre-pandemic levels, and the number of publications declined.
