The Yuksekova complex in SE Turkey is a part of a continuous belt of ophiolites and subduction-accretion complexes that stretches from Troodos in the west to Oman in the east, representing the remnants of the Southern Branch of Neotethys. This complex mainly comprises a tectonically chaotic assemblage of basaltic dykes and pillow lavas associated with radiolarian cherts, shales and pelagic limestones. Detailed petrological work on submarine basaltic lavas from Elazig-Malatya area in SE Turkey revealed the presence of two distinct tectonomagmatic groups displaying island arc and back-arc characteristics. Radiolarian assemblages are described for the first time from radiolarian cherts in primary depositional contact with the basaltic rocks in this belt. Two distinct assemblages are recognized as Upper Cenomanian to Lower Turonian and Lower Coniacian to Lower Maastrichtian based on the characteristic radiolarian taxa. The new fossil data supports the suggestions that the southern branch of Neotethys has closed by intra-oceanic subduction where the arc and back-arc type oceanic crust generation was involved not earlier than Upper Cretaceous. Combined U-Pb ages and Lu-Hf systematics of detrital zircons from Early Cambrian Gondwanan siliciclastic rocks in S Turkey: Provenance and correlations with coeval successions in peri-Gondwanan terranes

Semih Gursu, Serhat Koksal, Andreas Moeller, George D. Kamenov, M. Cemal Goncuoglu, Kevin Hefferan, Paul A. Mueller, Huseyin Kozlu

Summary: The detrital U-Pb age peaks and Lu-Hf systematics of peri-Gondwanan units in southern Turkey suggest their derivation from Neoproterozoic igneous suites in the Sinai Peninsula, Israel, and the Eastern Desert. These sediments were likely derived from sedimentary recycling processes in a continental back-arc tectonic setting. The provenance of the sediments correlates with nearby regions such as the Nubian Shield and Saharan Metacraton.

Petrogenesis of Late Cretaceous A-type plutonic rocks from the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt (NE Turkey): constraints from zircon U-Pb geochronology, zircon Lu-Hf and whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes

Cem Yucel, Emre Aydincakir, Abdullah Kaygusuz, Mehmet Arslan, Keewook Yi, Youn-Joong Jeong, Derya Cicerali

Summary: The Late Cretaceous magmatic activity in the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt of NE Turkey was characterized by the intrusion of I-type and A-type plutons. A-type plutons from the Sebinkarahisar area, with ages of approximately 77.36 +/- 0.96 Ma, display characteristics of enrichment in K2O and Na2O, Ga, Zr, and strong negative Eu anomalies. These plutons were formed in an extensional tectonic environment and were sourced from a metasomatized lithospheric mantle and juvenile crust.

A geochemical perspective on the genesis of Cenozoic basic volcanism in northeastern Turkey: an overview of metasomatism and heterogeneity of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle in a post-collisional setting

Mehmet Arslan, Irfan Temizel

Summary: The post-collisional Cenozoic basic volcanic rocks in NE Turkey show temporal variations in whole-rock lithophile element and highly siderophile element (HSE) systematics that are mainly associated with the nature of sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) sources and parental melt generation. The lithophile element and HSE geochemical data reveal the heterogeneity of the SCLM source, the influence of previous subduction and post-collisional interactions, and the impact of crustal contamination on the volcanic rocks.

Highly siderophile element and osmium isotope systematics of basaltic volcanics: a different approach to petrological processes

Mehmet Arslan, Irfan Temizel, Emel Abdioglu Yazar, Bahrican Ar, Cem Yucel

Summary: The highly siderophile element and Os isotope systematics of basalts have recently received significant attention in petrological studies due to their potential in constraining magma generation and evolution processes. The data obtained from modern techniques are used to analyze the HSE contents and ratios in basalts, which provide opportunities for geochemical modeling. The HSE contents and Pd-PGE/Ir-PGE ratios are important indicators for various geological processes in the origin and evolution of mantle-derived magmas.

LATE CRETACEOUS ARC MAGMATISM IN THE SOUTHERN CENTRAL PONTIDES: CONSTRAINTS FOR THE CLOSURE OF THE NORTHERN NEOTETHYAN BRANCHES

Kaan Sayit, M. Cemal Goncuoglu, Alessandro Ellero, Giuseppe Ottria, Chiara Frassi, Michele Marroni, Luca Pandolfi

Summary: In the southern Central Pontides in northern Turkey, Late Cretaceous magmatic units, including the Yerkuyu Unit and the Tafano Unit, with different tectono-magmatic characteristics, are discovered through the study of the North Anatolian Shear Zone. It is inferred that the subduction of the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan branch of the Neotethys Ocean resulted in different types of magmatism.
